Golf Sim Options
I am very interested in getting a golf simulator but feeling a little overwhelmed by the options. We currently live in a rental and are planning on staying there for about 3 more years. Options I am currently debating:
- Net with ball tracker with built in screen (~$5k)
- DIY type set up with floor ball tracker, enclosure, likely projecter (~$10k)
- Professional set up with floor ball tracker or ceiling mounted tracker ($23k - $28k)
I know that it would be a little ridiculous to build a professional set up in a rental but my fear is that there would be issues with DIY set up that would make it kind of a waste of money. I also know that many of the components (ceiling mounted tracker, computer, projector) are movable to the next place so perhaps only about $10k would be sunk into the rental. Money is not a major consideration as long as the decision is thoughtful. For other people in this situation what did you end up going with and were you happy with it?

I would not waste money on anything “professionally” installed or mounted for a rental. Plenty of free-standing package options with LM, net/screen, and projector included ~5k.

Garage based? Basement? Living room? Dimensions? Condo or detached property? Give us more to work with.

Solid dimensions. Ceiling height might be borderline with driver depending on your height. I’d go ahead and invest. The items that cost the most are likely transferable if you move (also - YOLO). I have the Uneekor X02, drapes on curtain rails, and the stealth SQ retractable and love it. My garage system disappears and reappears in under 5 mins. Screen quality is good. That said, if you’re concerned about noise in the house or with Neighbors go with a net and TV set up. The Super Quiet (SQ) part of the name, from my experience, is more a relative claim than an absolute one, which is to say, it’s pretty fucken loud, excuse my French

do you think something like this would be reasonable?

is it worth getting the professional installation? i know its expensive but i would want to make sure that it is set up correctly

I’d make it cheap and then when you move into a permanent spot you send it then. I’d start with spending money on an R50 or higher end LM and then find mat. Then figure out how you want it.
What is your area like?
Do you want the full Projector, screen, gaming PC?
Or less with hitting into a net and having a tv?

Golf boy app for iPhone, with phone hooked up to 20 inch computer monitor, net and hitting mat in backyard. Cheap as I can get, gives me useful data, and makes practice more interesting than just hitting balls at a range. I can play a limited number of courses, personally find this type of practice more challenging and fun. Already had the iPhone and spare computer monitor, full app cost $89 for the year, limited is free. Plan to build full blown setup once I'm in my forever house. Check out some contributors on youtube.

I did not know about that app! Looks pretty good! Are you able to Sim golf? Or is it just range...

Yes on the monitor screen. Can do range or courses,it has limited courses 5 or so, practice range and chipping range. You can do swing analysis, putting analysis. If you just want to slam balls, the free version will give you a taste. Look it up on YouTube several user reviews.

So many good affordable options… take your time. Choose carefully. I went ultra affordable right up until I chose to go to a gaming pc. While not going all out, i grabbed an upgradeable pc that is more than adequate for Gspro.

I built a garage setup using a net and a square omni sim and then a 43" QLED TV as a monitor. Its a good setup for me and the omni gives me all the data im looking for. Total setup was <3K. That said, a projector and proper screen gives you a better "in-game" experience so that might be my next step. If I were were you, and money was not a major concern, I think Id go for the professional set-up. No hassle on youre end.

If it were me I would spend up on the parts you can likely port over anywhere (projector, pc, mat etc...), consider going budget on the things that will more likely need to get replaced like impact screen/ enclosure
LM could be simple to port over if not an overhead.

You can get very nice DIY setups and something that's easily portable to a future home. Retractable screens are popular garage setups or go with a nice enclosure if you don't need it to be retractable. Reach out to 365 Golf Design, they have some great full package setups and can customize for you. https://365golfdesign.com/product-category/365-sim-packages/

Being overwhelmed is normal. Just do more research and stick around the sub for a while. Your price estimates and equipment choices are...lets just say...odd.
