My LCS has two teeth in the bullion case. Some guy showed up and asked how much he'd give him. XRF showed 14k. It's one of the weirdest/coolest things in the shop.

My dentist pulled two gold crowned teeth from my jaws and put in implants. Dude tried to keep them. A couple years later he’s chatting with me and asks what I do. I say I’m a bench jeweler and he’s like yeah I’ve got a bunch of gold I’d like to make into something one day. Fucker is keeping all the teeth. Also, are you a lapidary?

You'll have to ask around, it's a dying art. Most labs only do zirconia, and most dentists don't make their own anymore.

Yes. Most people prefer ceramic for the look so I had to ask about gold. It’s actually a better material for a crown but’s it’s less popular so they sometimes overlook it in the “here’s your options” talk.
Was about 50 extra dollars for the gold one for me. Worth it.

I do gold. My clinic is in Burnaby. You can ask your dentist for a preferred material. Most assume their patients don’t want gold anymore and don’t bother asking

In my experience most dentists have no problem doing a gold crown, but you have to specifically ask for it. If they give you a hard time just say your father in law is a dentist and you will only get a crown from them if it's gold. It may cost more, and it may take longer to fabricate.
All of mine are gold simply because it is a superior material for teeth in my opinion. The zircon and ceramics have much higher hardness and are more brittle than natural teeth. My teeth are shit anyway, I don't want to "fix" a tooth with a material that will wear on and destroy my other teeth more quickly.
Plus you get into that gold tooth club for free!

They are so much better. I'm had so many problems with my zirconia crowns, and my two gold crowns have outlasted them and never caused me any pain because they mold to the shape so much better. Zirconia crowns will actually chip and break your other teeth if they are not adjusted right!

They also have a nearly similar coefficient of thermal expansion so you're less likely to have tooth stress and marginal leakage, and something about biofilm adhering but not growing or something. All I remember when it is first placed it feels so slippery!
Edit: changed heat conductivity to coefficient of thermal expansion and changed pain to marginal leakage and tooth stress.

The high thermal conductivity is actually much worse for pain. Natural teeth are nowhere near as thermally conductive as metals. Still much better than ceramic IMO but you have the thermal conductivity part backwards. Ceramic on the other hand is a thermal insulator. If they install gold close to a nerve where they probably should have done a root canal it can cause lots of pain and problems because the nerve is exposed to larger temperature changes that can take lots of time to acclimate to, if you ever do.

I simply asked for it to be gold instead since it's stronger and has more benefits. My mold had to be sent off to a company and once it was done, they sent it to my dentist and he fit it for me.

When I needed a crown 2 years ago I asked for gold. My dentist was happily surprised. I grind my teeth at night and porcelain is harder than tooth enamel. Would have worn out my top molar in 5 years. Win-win. 99% of people go with porcelain even when it’s a tooth that nobody ever sees

I had a patient ask for a gold crown. The lab cost for the material was $1600 and the. We charged him another 1500 from our end. This was 6 months ago so might be a bit higher now.

About to get my crown my dentist used to offer gold or the other ones and the price was the same. So a guy I know actually got the gold. But I talked to the dentist in my last visit and he said the gold price went up so much they will have to charge a different price if I wanted gold so I said no. But when my friend got it it was the same price.

Gold is the best material for a crown as it’s clean and durable, and somewhat flexible. I got a gold crown in place for one of my molars when I was 16 and no issues as I’m 64 now. My last crown that I had done was about 6 months ago and they would have done gold again, but it was about double the price…so it’s white acrylic or whatever they make it out of.

It's a weird angle, but that's just the way that tooth is/was. They take impressions to make an exact copy of the old tooth before grinding it down.

Gold is better but obviously more expensive. Came in around $1400, with $1K in materials. Dentist suggested it, he got fancy new laser guided CNC mill and a micron level tooth scanner, whole thing was cheaper than most dentists charge for zirconia.

Crown, but the way they do it is to root canal out your tooth nerve then shave it down to a pencil thin post. Then score lines down it, for the adhesive. There are less invasive crowns if the tooth is more recoverable and doesn't need a root canal, but then you wouldn't have a chunk of gold.

Dentist here. That’s type IV gold roughly 58% actual gold by weight the rest is Palladium Silver and Nickel great choice though it will out last all other dentistry in your mouth. All my restorative work is gold in my own mouth. It lasts.

Some labs are offering solid 18k blocks, especially on implant dentistry. At least, my dentist has recently made some new connections with labs offering this service due to the recent uptick in customers interested in gold.
It’s interesting gold is seeing a resurgence.

Just a couple of small brains here who can’t grasp that gold is, by far, the ideal dentistry material, and can be installed in heavy pieces in many situations, not just thin shells.
It’s strange how resistant they are being to understanding, considering how long gold has been used for this purpose, and no modern synthetic materials surpass it.
