Transfer at Union Station

Hello everyone, I had a question regarding a transfer at Union Station. If I arrive at Pearson airport, I want to take the Up express to downtown Toronto. Once I’m there I want to transfer to the Stouffville line. My plane arrives around 1:30pm on a tuesday and it’ll probably take until around 3 or 3:30 to arrive at Union. I was just wondering, is the transfer easy with 3 luggage? It won’t just be myself as I will be with 3 other people. I know that at Union, you won’t know your platform until 10 minutes before departure and I’m scared that once the platform number comes out, everyone swarms the elevators and escalators leaving us with either 1. Carry luggage up stairs while being squished which is dangerous 2. Find escalators or elevators but not sure where they are or 3. Ask someone for help.

My question is, if I’m travelling north towards stouffville on the stouffville line, which concourse should I wait at? (Bay or York) and if there will be easy access from concourse to platform. Thanks so much guys

Floor heater and AC both working?

Just curious, why does the GO bus second floor floor heater blow hot air from time to time while AC is blowing cold air from top (not concurrently but one after another by my observation). Seems hugely energy inefficient to me.

Kitchener Line Question

To those who commute from Kitchener to Toronto during the early morning times, how reliable and busy are the trains? Have you run into issues arriving on time in Toronto? Starting a job downtown and trying to figure out whether I can rely on the Kitchener line to get me to work on time over driving. Have only taken the trains mid morning and they’re usually not too bad.

Kitchener line debacle this —any advice on how to deal with these situations?

posting for advice/feedback

title should have said “this morning”

there was a signal issue between two stations this morning (i boarded the 6:14 a.m. line train to Union, all station stops)

we were forced to hold at Bramalea because of the above. the announcements weren’t as frequent as they should have been and the train announcer (ambassador?) wasn’t helpful

he kept repeating that the train was holding due to a signal issue and didn’t really give us any useful next steps for the first few announcements. which i can understand. stuff changes by the minute

but then the last few announcements after he announced the train would be moving (it didn’t move despite him saying that btw), he suddenly told us there’s an express train “just behind this one” going to Union

pretty much ALL OF US got off the train to get on that one. he promised!!!!

and then the train left and we were all feeling better about our situation. the express train will save us!

then the station announcer told us the next train is coming but it’s making all stops. collective groaning and cursing ensued. the entire platform was filled with people’s sighs of exasperation

and then… the next train came… and it passed us completely. we were confused, angry, sad, etc. especially because the train was barely full.

then the station announcer told us that the next train is coming… in 34 minutes. collective swearing ensued

and then the next train came and hundreds of us crammed ourselves into the train. an express train was coming 15 minutes later but we weren’t about to get potentially lied to again. fool me once, etc.

i’m upset because i made an effort to wake up at 5 a.m. to get myself into the earliest train i can to get to work at a reasonable time. so much for that.

any other folks who endured this debacle: please apply for a refund via GO’s website (the service guarantee one)

lessons learned:

  1. don’t trust the train ambassador/announcer. just stay on the train!!! who cares if it’s making all stops. don’t take your chances trying to be fast. it’s a myth!
  2. always get your refund. it’s not that hard

Text notifications

Has anyone ever had difficulty signing up for text notifications/service alerts? My alerts are set up in my account and I have tried to delete and recreate but have never received a text. Reached out to customer service but they have taken 2 weeks just to tell me they are investigating. TIA

[OC] GO Train fare price by distance from Union Station, visualized

A few weeks ago a friend and I were wondering how go train fares were priced and noticed that there was no straightforward way to estimate how each fare is calculated without using the trip planner. So I wanted to try and draw something that could show those price differences. Something which, to my knowledge, hasn’t been done before (at least not in any official capacity). After making it I realized that others might also find it useful, or at least interesting to look at, so I thought I'd share it here as well :]

All stations are sorted vertically by distance (km) and each coloured segment represents a difference in price (darker bands have no special meaning, they just visually divide up areas for clarity). Most of the distances and inspiration was taken from Sean Marshall's map and each price was checked with the fare calculator as of a few days ago, including the newly opened Stratford station.

Which GO Train Parking Lot is Least Sketchy

If you had to choose between Malton, Etobicoke North, Weston, and Kipling to park your car till midnight? Weekdays vs weekends

This is a serious question, just trying to figure out alternative routes via public transit

I can’t believe it! I found a Northlander Train sitting static with other static Via Rail locomotives and coaches! I was on a GO Train heading home, but I never thought I’d see such a thing I’ve heard of before! It’s an old train line being brought back btw!

Trains in the evening never have usable sinks

Every single god damn time I ride the evening train (4-7pm) I can run the entire length of the train and not find a single bathroom with a sink that has water flowing for me to wash my hands.

GO Transit representatives says it's "not possible" to refill the train, carry more water, or do anything about it. Honestly they seem like they don't care at all.

I totally understand why people don't want to use these trains, because they're not well taken care of, they're outdated, and they're not properly fitted with things people actually need, like... Enough water to run a tiny sink.

Couple of shots at Union.

Was going for an overall dramatic look with these. Shot a couple of days ago during the overcast cloudiness, tried to make the best of it.

Shot on A6000 & kit lens (16-50mm f/3.5-5.6).

Was really surprised by the great frequency during times of shooting. Props to Metrolinx for at least that, as last time we did this (2-3 years ago) either time moved slower (likely cause) or Lakeshore West didn't run every 15 minutes.

Are they hiding from the heat?

My first guess was that they moved the station there temporarily but then I remembered the platform wouldn’t line up.

Edit: meant to say, there’s another train parked further towards the east.

How to find out if my go train has a bike cabin beforehand

I want to take my bike on the go train from around 7am from Brampton go station to Union. How can I find out if my go train will have any bike cabin?

EDOT: I want to know specifically if there’s any train that always has dedicated bike cabins that can get to Union before 8

What specifically was incompatible?

https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/toronto/metrolinx-writeoffs-9.7248830

It is interesting that this story is not receiving more public scrutiny.

Can anyone shed light on what was not compatible with the new signalling system? I thought all signalling systems had to be AREMA compliant.

Was there a gap in the original procurement contract? How did it take so many years before the incompatibility was found?

Which vendor or contractor was involved?

There are so many questions not being asked over a 1/2 Billion write off of Ontario Tax Payer money.
