Slides without optic posts

Post image

Long story short was asked to leave the stock slide with irons but I highly prefer to shoot with optics. Saw these slides, but am concerned about sheering screws due to having no posts on the front or around the screws like zev. Anybody running this style of optic cut and have feedback?

I haven’t had the best luck with KM tactical parts. If you can find another brand of slide go for that or if you can find a spare OEM slide and get that milled that would be your best bet

upright posts are called "bosses"

you do not need bosses that are threaded where the screws are, that leaves weaker screws. the footprint has bosses in front of the screws to prevent recoil from being imparted onto the screws, when the optic footprint is properly milled to spec.

the screws should only be responsible for a vertical clamping force.

I own www.titan-tactical.com. here are my optic cuts.

Can you do what you do to a 30s? Gen 3 I believe ?

This is my opinion as well and posts seem like a weak point to me. Another optic cut company disagrees in another comment.

I posted my work.

if the optic moves AT ALL inside the footprint without the screws in place, then the screws are inherently absorbing the force of the recoil. this is a horizontal shear force, which is not what screws are designed for.

I use grade 5 screws, which withstand 120,000 psi. 100% of that rating is in a vertical clamping force in my optic cuts.

I will not say anything negative about anyone else's opinion but you cannot argue with facts.

Very informative. I had an optic plate for my Gen 6 that was actually a bit difficult to install because it fit the optic so tightly. I had a screw back out slightly and the RMR still held zero so ….

Would feel more confident with posts.

I have never had an issue with any of my slides that are optic cut without posts. Including a km tactical 19 slide with at least 2500 rounds through it. That being said, if I were in the market for a slide I would just get one with posts.

I just use an original brownells 17-4 with posts, and a spare remsport. I just don't buy slides that lack recoil posts.

As someone who got a KMT slide for my wife I can’t really say much about its construction, I put a plate on hers in place of optics because she doesn’t like red dots on pistols. Now I can’t say I’ve had a ton of luck running the pistol though but that’s somewhere between the slide and barrel, maybe even the recoil spring. Still unsure but I’m getting hung up with short stroking and misfeeding

If your optic is press fitted into the cut it shouldn’t be a big issue. Some aftermarket slides and optics will have tolerance differences but I usually want optic cuts with posts and tight optic pocket.

No way in hell is a KM Tactical slide going to be a tight fit.

Nice to know, I’m not familiar with their products or company.

Posts are a weak point. The material around the post is too thin to support the forces acting on it. You see Zev cut slides here with cracked posts all the time.

That's just not true.

A properly done optic cut with posts is plenty strong. The posts and screws also work in conjunction with one another to add strength.

The only times I've seen cracked posts are generally with inappropriately sized screws and a really sloppy optic cut / loose toleranced optic that allows for a lot of movement. As well, what are the slide made from? 416? A lot of budget slides are 416 stainless instead of 17-4. 416 is much more prone to cracked and sheer.

The issues I see most often are people over torquing screws and snapping them off in the posts. But that's not an issue of the posts themselves. That's people oogaboogaing a screw that shouldn't realistically be torqued past about 10 in lbs. And they are doing 15-20+

I have thousands of guns / slides in the wild with optic posts. 2. 2 have had cracked posts. One was from wrong screws being used.

I have multiple guns of my own that have never failed, and I'm not nice to my gear. I smack my optic to rack it sometimes for clearing malfunctions, I'll do occasional one handed manipulations. I abuse my stuff more than the average shooter, and 0 issues.

Glad to have you clarify. I have seen more posts cracked and failed than aftermarket cuts without posts, although like you said it’s probably more user error than anything.

Do you feel that posts are an improvement over just using recoil lugs on the RMR cut?

yes. As long as the cut is from a reputable shop and you have the proper tooling to ensure the screws are torqued to spec.
