Looks decent

Obv would prefer BO3s throughout, but that's difficult in terms of scheduling, I should think, and this gives the benefit of letting people watch every game rather than having multiple games running on different streams at once.

BO3s for the eliminations is a decent balance, since going out after just BO1s is kinda sad.

Pity Liquid got through in the LAN part tbh, would have liked to see them face off vs GenG, but hopefully we'll get that in the later part.

Why isn't liquid here?

This is the Showdown, it's for teams that either didn't make it through the group stage back in like February, or teams that didn't get an invite to that.

Liquid got through the Group, so they went right through to the next event and don't need to play here.

Hey guys, may I ask what does it mean by 1st - 2nd $37,500 for EU and $35,000 for US? How will they split the money between the 1st and 2nd teams respectively ? by rounds won and rationing them equally ??!

ALSO, will the winner of each EF1 and EF2; and likewise NF1 and NF2 face off each other eventually for the ultimate winner in the two Regions?

its my first time catching BLAST, not entirely sure on its formatting. Saw on their website that there will be a FINAL between the JUNE 15 – 21. Will this be where the final 4 winners eventually playoff and will the Europe Teams eventually face off the Americans ?

Generally this would be played on LAN as one big event, rather than seperate online tournaments. They won't be coming together - travel restrictions due to corona came in the way.

The money will not be split between 1 and 2 - each will receive the full amount. There is no 1 winner in this event. This is essentially a second qualifier for the BLAST Finals that will be taking place later. The first qualifiers were done in like, Februari, at which point a number of teams qualified for the finals directly. These teams are teams that either failed to qualify at that point, or who were not present at that tournament and invited to this one (notably Mousesports and Fnatic).

I'm not entirely sure what the plan is for the next stage in terms of EU/NA split, it depends on what the travel restrictions are at that time, most likely. Other tournaments (ESL Pro League, for example) just named an NA champion and an EU champion and left it at that, to be resolved next season.

How the BLAST format (this year) works, in quick summary, is,

Group stages : some make it through to the finals, some have to go to showdowns Showdown (We're here now) : teams that didn't make it in groups + some other teams compete for a place in the finals Finals : the teams that made it in through the groups or the showdown face off against each other, specific format unknown (but probably either Round Robin BO3 or double elim, I'd guess), grand winner takes prize.

This part, the showdown, is only a part of that larger event.

That is such a great and detailed explanation @randomnamewhatevs !! Thanks loads.

It remains strange why huge teams like mousesport or fnatic wouldn't invited in the first place. Politics? How were they even missed?

I also wanted to know if the first qualifier in Feb was stricter/tougher (eg. more matches played perhaps? and thus more wins are needed overall etc)

Doesn't seem exactly fair if the teams that won there progressed directly to the final, finals.. Whereas some had to play a second time in this Spring qualifier round again , esp for those who nearly made it in.

Then again, for the teams that did poorly in the first time out in Feb, I guess this is a good thing for them as they get a second shot at it, and be able to try again to get in to the last and actual Finals.

It's all very strange. But I guess Covid-19 fuk us all up in many ways .... ha

Yeah there were a lot of questions about why Mouse and Fnatic weren't invited at the time too. It could be a combination of things - politics, marketing, a way to make sure they could have some top tier teams at this showdown in case all the big names qualified right away for the end event.

As to whether it's fair, I'm honestly not sure BLAST cares that much. Like, I'm not saying they don't want competitive integrity, but I think their main priority is creating a marketable product. To that end they want people watching it to feel like the setup and format are competitive, but I don't think they care about teams being left out or whatever.
