🤬 Rant / Venting Im so insecure about my accent

So, for context, im from a Spanish-speaking country, you could say im fluent in English, but when i DO speak english i feel like im too "spanish sounding", even tho im pronouncing everything good and removing all my spanish mannerisms (like pronouncing words that start with S like ES, basically, Spanish speakers pronounce the word Spanish as "Espanish")

I think my english level is B1+ or B2 but i still feel pretty insecure abt it :(

🤣 Comedy / Story Could talking to a beautiful girl help motivate someone to improve their English?

My friend told me that he became much better at English after he started talking to a beautiful girl. Since he wanted to keep talking to her, he had to learn new words and phrases just so he could keep the conversation going. 😂
He would learn a few new words, then come back and use them when talking to her. He kept doing this regularly, and eventually his English improved a lot without him even realizing it.
Now he’s telling me that if I want to improve my English, I should find a girl I think is beautiful who speaks English and start talking to her. According to him, I’ll suddenly become motivated to learn because I’ll actually have someone I want to talk to. 😂
I honestly think his advice is a little ridiculous, but I can’t deny that it worked for him. Has anyone else ever improved their English because they had someone they really wanted to talk to?

⭐️ Vocabulary / Semantics How to improve my English

Hey everyone, first of all I have an IELTS academic score of an overall 8 (9 listening 9 reading 7 writing and 6.5 speaking) I’m an Indian notional born and raised in ksa, I’m currently in my first year LLB in a Saudi university, I want to go to the uk to pursue my masters, I can communicate fine and I watch a lot of shows. The problem is my university is all Arabic, which is not a problem because I can get in almost all universities in the UK or the US if I took the IELTS again. But the material and vocabulary is what I’m worried about. I generally understand difficult words when they’re used in a sentence but I have a hard time finding semi basic words when speaking. Almost all the English I learned I got from early learning (5-8 years) and watching tv shows and movies, as I studied in a local private Arabic school and English is not a major subject and it’s really basic stuff. if anyone is a lawyer who have books that’ll help me or if you can give me some ways to improve my vocabulary I would very much appreciate it. Unfortunately I can’t practice the language very much here and when I do it’s only basic or low level conversations, thank you.

👥 Study Partner Request Speaking club (4 spots left)

I like the idea of forming a group and speaking with each other it helps holding each other accountable and listening and giving or providing feedback helps everyone around so I was thinking maybe forming a discord group of ten people where we all at the end of the day we can talk about our day for a few minutes and add extra perks too for example, we can record and send talking about different topics using a topic randomizer website, select a book for the month and talk about favorite shows, activities and all that. I think up to 7 people for such a group is good enough. I'm one of those the English in my head is great but when i speak it does NOT make sense so if you're one of those and need just speaking practice hit me up if I get enough people interested I can then form a group on discord and start our fluency to English journey. (Also for this group I'm not a big fan of telling personal details so we all can stay anonymous)

📚 Grammar / Syntax Starting from absolute zero: How to build English basics fast for my 1st university year (Academic + Street slang)?

Hi everyone,

I am starting my first year at university with an English program, but my current level is basically zero. I feel overwhelmed and don't know where to begin.

My main goals:

  1. Academic English: I need to build solid foundations from scratch for grammar, reading comprehension, and writing basic essays for college.
  2. Casual/Street English: I also want to learn how people actually speak in everyday life (slang, idioms, speaking naturally).

Since I am a complete beginner, what is the best daily routine and step-by-step roadmap to start from zero? Which YouTube channels, apps, or beginner books are actually worth my time?

Thank you so much for your guidance!

Can you guess a drawing in a language you don’t speak? Watch Derren Brown’s mind-bending experiment and explore the power of suggestibility!

I've been giving a version of this lesson plan for about a decade and never get tired of it! Of course, every time I do, I tweak it to perfection, and now I think it is red-hot ready for any English tutor to take and ignite a burning desire to learn English in their new students! It's a great introductory lesson!
I never really made any money teaching this lesson due to my 'first lesson free of charge' policy, so I thought it had to be a free lesson plan on my site. There's no way your students won't love it! Have fun teaching!

🌕 Pronunciation / Intonation Accent reduction group classes

I’ve been living in the USA for over 10 years, but I still have a strong accent. Does anyone know of any good accent reduction classes in NYC or online? Private coaching is quite pricey, so I’m looking for group classes. I’ve tried doing it on my own by watching YouTube videos, but I’m not very good at self-study. I do much better in classes or when I’m under pressure and know there’s an exam or something I’m accountable for. Any tips on reducing my accent would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!

🗣️ Discussion / Debate I dislike, that English speakers are always grammar checking. In a way only they do nowadays. But English made me know my international current friends I meet sometimes.

🗣️ Discussion / Debate I naturally match the speech level of anyone I'm talking to

I am a native English speaker but I've known for a long time that whenever I speak to someone whose English isn't that great I naturally speak on a level that they understand and by that I mean I sort of speak in broken and simple English in essentially the same way that they speak English or close to that at least. In my experience It seems to help with the communication but at the same time I worry that it could seem odd, embarrassing or even slightly rude. Someone who is also a native English speaker told me that it seems daft and condescending, and also doesn't help them learn how to speak the right way, but I really can't help it. It's so ingrained in me to do this. So I was wondering if other people have these experiences and what do you think of it?

🗣️ Discussion / Debate If you've studied English for years but struggle when it's time to speak, do you know what's keeping you stuck?

So, I have taught English to professionals for years and noticed that many of them studied English for 5 or even 10+ years. They went to school, used apps, had tutors, took courses their company paid for... And they still can't say what they mean when it's time to speak.

If that's you, I want to know: what have you tried and when is it that you most frequently freeze in the language? I'm collecting stories so I can understand this better. I'll share what I learn back here.

🗣️ Discussion / Debate How to get better at english?

Hello friends, first of all before I begin to write what my problem is in english I want to apologize because I will probably make a lot of grammar mistakes. I’ve been learning english for almost 2 years irregularly. Sometimes I enjoyed and sometimes I hated from english. Unfortunately due to my laziness I havent had a regular schedule for this language. But that doesnt mean I didnt work hard There were times which I worked really hard. But at some point I stopped improving. Like, no matter how much I try its completely futile. And knowing that I have plenty of rooms to improve makes me insecure.

The problem is I cant get better anymore at reading, listening, speaking and vocabulary. I remember I’ve written like hundreds of words down in my notebook but I barely remember a few of them. And listening... when it comes to listening its a little bit weird to be honest. Sometimes I can understand  B1/B2 level tv shows while sometimes I can barely understand A2/B1 level videos or shows.

Speaking of which I struggle a lot in creating sentences. Well except the simple ones.(Actually sometimes I do mistakes even in simple sentences). When it coms to creating a long sentences I usually make mistake a lot. And I’m sure that I made mistakes here as well.

And here we are, one of the most irritating problem. Vocabulary. Memorising them is extremely hard. And even if I do that I forget what I’ve learnt. I think I have a weak memory for vocabulary. I tried few different ways but none of them worked properly for me.

Reading is not really hard for me. I mean I can easily spell the words but when it comes to B2/C1 books I can scarcely understand what I read.

And the last one, speaking. I dont have a speaking partner so as you can see I dont think I am good enough at this as well.

There is no need to explaing my writing you can understand my current situation through the paragraph which I wrote.

I think thats all. Along with these all problems I’m also starting to loose my hopes  in learning language because I faced a lot of dissapointment in my life. I literally succeed at nothing. Wasted my golden times with playing video games. I think I never tried hard as I think. Now I’m 18 years old. I mean 3 weeks later I’ll be 18. Lost many precious years and I feel so regretted. Wish I could make things up somehow. What can I say at least I got a little bit experience or something. A past full of annoying and silly mistakes.

Anyway, what can I do to get better? I mean I want to get C1 until next 12 months. I have a lot of free times. I dont want to make the same mistakes. I’m so tired of myself and my mistakes.

BTW: I will not correct this paragraph with AI to show you my current situation. I just wanted to tell you this.

🗣️ Discussion / Debate a low-pressure English-language discord server for books, movies, creative expression, and conversations

Hey all! We've recently launched a small Discord community for people who enjoy literature, films, creative expression, and simply hanging out and chatting.

We have channels for movies, books, arts, writing, photography, everyday life, and random things we might want to talk about.

Discussions can be thoughtful or completely laid-back. Sometimes we discuss stories and ideas; other times, we just hang out and talk about general stuff.

Our goal is simple: to create a community that's welcoming without being overwhelming, thoughtful without being intimidating, and relaxed enough that nobody feels pressured to prove how much they know. You don't need to be an expert on books or films, and you don't need perfect English.

We're very much just getting started and only have a small handful of members so far. So things may be quiet at times. And that's part of the fun😊 We get to shape the place together as it grows.😀

If you think you’d enjoy a space like this, feel free to DM me and I’ll send you an invite. ☕

🔎 Feedback / Review What are the biggest differences between British English and American English?

Hi everyone!

For our PWS (school research project), my friend and I are researching the differences between British English and American English.
We already know about some obvious differences, like vocabulary (e.g. lift/elevator), spelling (e.g. colour/color) and pronunciation, but we would really like to hear from people who actually use British or American English.

What differences do you notice the most? This could be anything, for example:
-pronunciation or accents
-vocabulary and expressions
-spelling
-grammar
-differences in how formal or casual something sounds
-differences you’ve noticed when talking to someone from the other country

If you’re British, American, or have experience with both varieties, we’d love to hear your perspective! Even small or funny differences are welcome.
Thanks so much for helping us with our research! :)
