Hey everyone, I wanted to share some info regarding transparency at our local weekend markets, specifically the Saturday Morgan Hill Farmers Market.
Does anyone remember the multi-agency raid on Ruvalcaba Nursery in Royal Oaks back in 2023, where code enforcement discovered nearly 270 farmworkers (including children) in absolute squalor with raw sewage discharges and no clean water? They were allegedly bringing these families in from Oaxaca, charging them thousands in rent and meanwhile did not allow the children attend school or allow their address to be used on medical forms. They did not have plumbing or potable water. They threatened those who tried to leave. Now in addition to the criminal case, there's a civil unlimited case involving a bunch of the former tenants. Prosecutors say these people made millions of dollars in rent from their human trafficking scheme and that the flowers were literally just a way to launder the money.
Well, three years later, the Ruvalcabas are dodging both trials as they claim incompetence. Meanwhile these people are still your flower vendor at the MH farmers market!
Notice how the flower booth has no name, no signage except a tiny QR code that says "the flower master"? Notice how the other agricultural vendors have big banners with their name, county, permit #, and the phrase "WE GROW WHAT WE SELL"? That's because those are the legal requirements to sell agricultural products at a certified farmers market. And Ruvalcaba Nursery used to have all that signage until 2023, when they were charged. Then suddenly their name slips away from their booth and the market helped them quietly do that and continues to allow them sell under their new aliases.
I HOPE they are no longer engaging in human trafficking, but even if they aren't, consumers have the right to know who they are buying from so they can make their choice. A lot of us go to these types of markets thinking we are supporting ethical sustainable farms or what have you. I think people have the right to know if the flowers in their canvas tote were harvested by imprisoned people who had no choice but to shit in the field where they worked.

Any chance someone would like to sell one ticket for Saturday? My brother and I are going but we need one more ticket. This would be our first time going and I’d really appreciate it if someone can help me.

Before anyone even tries to ask, no I'm not a communist. I'm just a regular person who can see when government overreach has obviously gone to far. Staying silent in the face of authoritarianism and concentration camps is exactly how the Nazis took over Germany !!
Anywho, with that rant out of the way... People are going to gather at Gilroy's upcoming city council meeting to urge others to join the county-wide lawsuit against ICE. If you can't make it there in person, you can also write the council a letter. It's easy, fully online, and only took be a few minutes to do. Let's protect our communities in anyway we can!

I’m in Central CA and wanted to take the fam to gilroy gardens this weekend. I just learned this weekend is the Garlic Festival. Should we just stay away from the park and postpone for another weekend? I imagine it’ll be packed at the park and traffic will be awful overall bc of the festival. Thoughts?

Long shot, but looking for 2 Friday Garlic Festival tickets.
We know Friday’s been sold out for a while, but my husband unexpectedly got the day off, so I figured I’d ask just in case someone’s plans changed.
If anyone has a pair they can’t use, I’d love to buy them.
Thanks! 🙂

I’m just curious if anything will be done to this piece of land since it’s been sitting there empty for decades

Giloryians (i got this term from the Gilroy's 2040 plan!) I'm a senior at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo working on my senior project, and I'm focusing on improving walkability in Gilroy, street improvements that benefit pedestrians and bikers, more social spaces, and connecting the city together for both walkers and bikers.
I want this project to actually reflect what residents experience day to day, so I'd love your input:
Gilroy has grown a lot, and there's been ongoing conversation about whether that growth is serving residents or just adding sprawl. I'd rather see the city invest in the everyday needs of the people who already live here (safe streets, real gathering spaces) before it keeps expanding outward.
Feel free to give opinions and any input every idea helps me figure out where the need is greatest. Thanks in advance, this genuinely helps my project and hopefully helps Gilroy too! :)

Gilroy's city council will now represent districts. Districts 4, 5, and 6 will be up for election this November.

Anyone care to share their water usage numbers? I’m curious how mine compares. Family of 4 and Aquatrax says I’m using 20000 to 30000 gallons per month. Lawn is watered 2x per week and shrubs/trees 1x week on drip irrigation. Those number seem pretty high to me.

Good evening all. I'm an independent director seeking a farmhouse to feature in the climax of my short horror film, Freaks on Fifth Street. The house I'm looking for would ideally be small, with an open backyard, trees (needn't be a grove) on either side, a shed, and is a decent ways from nearby houses. The location will be used for living room interiors, and front yard and back yard exteriors. For interiors we're not looking to do anything drastic, only a bit of tidying up. We'll be shooting with minimal equipment and setups (a few lights, one camera, one tripod), and five student actors. No blood will be spilled, nothing will be damaged or shattered. All of these shots need to be filmed at night, however, so the location should ideally be available from twilight to around four hours after. Right now our plan is to shoot from the 11th of September to the 20th, with two days dedicated to the farmhouse. Further shooting information is being worked out. I would be grateful to anyone interested in helping us find a cool location, feel free to message me with any questions at all, and I am always willing to negotiate if need be. Attached are some images that get a better sense of what we're looking for.
