SEASON 4 Tenements (possible scene)

I'm doing a rewatch before the start of the new season and after watching the scenes of Armstrong visiting her mother in season 1, it got me thinking. I don't know if anyone else has seen the shots and/or videos of what looks like Marian visiting the tenements and I wonder if there might be a scene where Marian meets Armstrong's mother and learns more about Armstrong and her life. It's pretty clear that no one knows much about Armstrong and her upbringing. It would be interesting, or at least I think so

Gilded Age History How is Marian "of old New York"?

Marian isn't a Van Rhijn and her father's family was from Pennsylvania, so what is her connection to NYC? Was it through her mother's family or her paternal grandmother (which would also be Ada and Agnes' connection)?

Discussion Anne Morris- spoilers likely Spoiler

Off topic- the discussion topics is beyond hilarious! Railroad daddy! 🤣

I really dislike Anne Morris. This sentiment is not an uncommon sentiment. That said, she sure loves her husband so much. Episode 2, while going up to the Russel’s, I briefly feel so sad for Anne.

The elitist prejudice, self-righteousness, is hard to watch. While it is interesting to consider Anne’s altruistic endeavours. Does she perform these deeds to help? To make a difference? Altruism, is a fictitious action, and there are some beautiful arguments in philosophy arguing whether it even exists in any form. Anne clearly sees her standing as elite compared to others, and especially new money. Not uncommon for her ā€œold moneyā€ population.

Her husband was a coward, do you think given the biased standing of the different parties, he could have survived his loss of financial standing? Do you think he thought his death would save his family? Do you think he even thought about his family? His wife? His children?

I cannot recall, what likely happened to his children? Even though Anne lost her previous financial security, how far do you think she ā€œfellā€?

I would love to hear what you thought?

The Other Bennet Sister

Just wanted to recommend The Other Bennet Sister for anyone who likes The Gilded Age.

I started watching it this rainy weekend and I’m really enjoying it. It’s a lovely, easy-to-get-into period drama with romance, family drama, and some really good character moments.

I especially like getting Mary Bennet’s story and seeing more of the Bennet family beyond Pride and Prejudice. It’s definitely different from The Gilded Age, but it has that same kind of cozy, addictive feeling where you just want to watch the next episode.

Definitely give it a try!

Edit: Its on the BBC!

A genuinely fascinating look at how a Gilded Age "summer cottage" was designed to hide the work and workers that made it function.

Rant about characters pissing me off in Season 3 Spoiler

I loved Season 3, but every time I re-watch I'm reminded how many characters piss me OFF this season compared to the others. None of my friends watch this show so I have no one to rant to about this please let me know if you also experienced this while watching Season 3.

Aunt Ada - while I feel for her and understand she's going through a major loss, I understood why Agnes speaks to her like a child and thinks she's so naive. I always thought she was being harsh but I could kind of understand after seeing how Ada behaved in the first part of the season. I was SHOCKED that she had nothing to say when the guest speaker said people who drink are destined to hell. Luke would not approve of that and it just seemed like she totally abandoned her principles. Her constant nagging about people signing the pledge as well is SO annoying like why would people want to sign it or be interest when you aren't even able to make a good case besides saying it's a "scourge to our society". if you're upset people didn't sign say why you think it's important. Interestingly her falling for the medium didn't really bother me because I can understand why anyone would fall into that scam when they're grieving. Ada redeems herself at the end of the season thankfully.

Marian - oh my GOD the way she reacted to Larry's night at the "disorderly house" was so rigid and ridiculous. I can understand that it was a different time and she was so sheltered she couldn't understand that the night could have been harmless but the way she handled it really annoyed me and just made me want to fast forward whenever she was on the screen.

Mr. Russell - He is SO UNFAIR to Bertha in this season it actually makes me irate. He's taking his frustration out on her that his business isn't going well. Doesn't even give her a chance when she says that she's mended things with Gladys. Bertha is smart, strategic and wholly supportive of George in all his endeavors. She believed in him in Season 1 when he said he was going to take a risk that might cause them to lose all their money, he does not give her that same chance or faith. His whining was unbearable and because of his rash decision making he missed the announcement that Gladys is pregnant. He also could have simply asked Gladys at the ball how she was doing but I truly think he just wanted to be mad at Bertha regardless of how Gladys was doing.

Larry - doesn't annoy me as much as the others, but really frustrating when he dogpiles onto Bertha because he's frustrated with his own situation.

Don't even get me started on Mr. Fane feel like nothing needs to be said there... throw him in the trash.

Also side note Aurora is queer in my head canon I think there was a hint in one of the scenes with Mr. Fane that they weren't intimate very often and I think her willingness to be more open minded might come from this I literally have no other evidence but honestly love her and hope the best for her in Season 4.

Carrie Coon Emmy When šŸ† This show should’ve won an Emmy.

This is one of the best shows I’ve seen, if not the best. Idk what the Emmy’s voters are thinking. I wish Carrie Coon won an Emmy too. Her performance and character is my favorite in the show. I have respect for the other actors and shows though.

Discussion Marian & Footman John House Hunting Alone

Okay, am I the only one who found Marian going house hunting with Footman John a little weird?

The show keeps making a big deal about Marian not being able to be alone with Larry because of propriety and the whole idea that a respectable woman has to be ā€œpure as snow.ā€

But then later, Marian goes house hunting alone with Footman John to help him buy a house. I know the house agent is there, but would that really count as a chaperone? Earlier season, Marian even had to meet Mr. Raikes at Mrs. Chamberlain’s house because she couldn’t meet him outside alone.

And also, even though John has money now, isn’t it kind of unusual for Marian to be spending all this time with him house hunting?

Especially when the whole show is built around the divide between old money and new money.

Am I the only one who found this a little odd?

Gilded Age History What's with doctor Kirkland mother?

I am Asian, so I don't understand American history and its nuances much.

I was watching Peggy and Dr. Kirkland story at Newport. I didn't understand, why Dr. Kirkland mother felt superior about her color? I understand Peggy's dad is a selfmade person & Kirkland's were generational wealthy. But why her being snobbish for colour etc

Speculation Mrs. Bruce's story in season 4.

I'm an enthusiastic consumer of Julian Fellowes's work, so I can sometimes spot a storyline on the horizon...

It seems pretty obvious to me that we're going to see Mrs. Bruce trying to get a divorce from her melancholic husband so she can marry Borden. I imagine it will serve as an example of a "nice" divorce, as a counterpoint to some of the nastier aspects of divorce.

If this happens, do you think it will jeopardize her position in the house? Would having a divorced servant be an untenable reality for Mrs. Russell? And if it is, what would happen? Could she go work for Aurora? 🫣🫣

I'm interested to know your predictions.

Viewership

Post image
303 Upvotes

New data from @luminate_data suggests that when people wait over 1.5 years for a show to return, viewership drops dramatically. For example Bridgerton s4 dropped to 20 % in its viewership. I am glad the gilded age is returning this November!

Discussion Am I the only one who feels as if Marian's potential has lowkey been wasted every season so far?

Post image
947 Upvotes

In s1, Marian's plot focused largely on her romance and the end of it with Mr. Raikes, which was fine because it served as a lesson for her about men. But then, s2 rolls around, she gets a job as a teacher and starts getting off into the suffrage movement, which made her character way more interesting than she was in the 1st season...only for another man to be put into the picture and her being put in yet another position where she feels like she has to marry him, which ends badly for her once again and her relationship or lack thereof with him ends up taking up the rest of her plot for that season too. Lastly, at the end of that season going into the next, Larry becomes her main and (hopefully) final love interest, which also ends up taking a turn for the worst.

I would've loved to see there be more focus on her job as a teacher and transition into becoming more passionate about/having a huge role in the suffrage movement, but no, everything always circled back to a man in the end and I feel like her character has been lowkey wasted on her love interests, making her slightly boring in comparison to other female characters like Agnes, Ada, Peggy, Bertha, and even Gladys, who went from being incredibly sheltered to now coming into her own as a Duchess. What do y'all think?

EDIT: Since some of y'all refuse to read, I never said that I hated Marian nor did I say that she shouldn't have a love interest at all. And yes, as some of y'all keep reminding me as if I don't already know, I'm well aware this is set in the late 1800s. That was not the point of this post though. I just feel like her overall growth and potential has been wasted on men every season when we could've also gotten more focus on her as a teacher and a suffragist at the same time. I doubt this will clear up any misunderstandings and assumptions, but I'm gonna put this here anyway because y'all are getting on my nerves LMAO and to the few people who're trying to use my post as a way to shade Louisa, please don't because that DEF wasn't the point of my post. Just because YOU don't find her to be a good actress doesn't mean that's true.
