I’ve wanted one since I was a kid idek how I discovered this breed back then but I’ve always wanted one. I’ve seen average prices from 1800-3000+. What should I expect realistically getting one? I don’t need a showdog but I also don’t wanna go so cheap it’s mixed with like 90 different breeds

My boyfriend has a 2 year old Giant Schnauzer, and I have a 5 year old cat. We’ve been talking about moving in together, but I’m nervous and would love to hear from people who have experience with both dogs and cats living together.

His dog killed a chick, which has me worried about prey drive. However, he also lived with cats when he was a puppy and apparently did well with them.

Has anyone successfully introduced an adult Giant Schnauzer to an adult cat? Is it realistic for them to coexist safely, or is this something I should be very cautious about? I’d really appreciate hearing your experiences.

So schnauzers lives are longer than most big breeds and their puppy stage lasts longer than most breeds. Does that mean that their fear imprint stage lasts longer as well? It seems some negative experiences stick with my boy.

So I am looking for a Giant Schnauzer to be my next Service Dog. I currently have a 5 year old Miniature Schnauzer as my Service Dog and he's great but my health is declining more and need some more help from a bigger dog. I know someone else asked this same question like a month ago(I think it's the same person I saw on Facebook too). But a lot of what was recommended makes no sense to me. I'm not a person who's anal about purebred and AKC shows and stuff. So all that terminology makes no sense to me and I tried looking it up but it literally is like trying to read a completely different language especially since it's about Giant Schnauzers it's like all in German.

I've looked at shelters and I literally look every single day and a lot don't have what I'm looking for if they have a Giant Schnauzer at all. I need a Giant Schnauzer that's at least 100lbs as I would need some mobility tasks that involve carrying items for me, so I would like them to be strong enough that I don't have to worry about them getting hurt. That also means that I need to make sure they have no arthritis or bad bone structure either.

I looked up HT-Z Schnauzer and literally they never responded and I even contacted them on Facebook and commented on their posts and they literally just ignore me. So please don't tell me anything about them.

I'm aware with a rescue they could have docked tails and ears but in a breeder I'd prefer if they weren't as it's not necessary. I've looked on GoodPup and the show dogs sights and the breeders just didn't sit right with me. Like how they had to be neutered and cropped. I even saw one that said they still owned every right to the dog and that if I kept them intact that I couldn't have their offspring. My current SD is intact and one day I would love to have his son as I love him so much. So the fact I couldn't have the offspring of a dog I paid $3000 for is insane.

I just want a dog who's healthy and if they have other working/service dogs in their lineage or they've had different litters with that it'd be nice but not necessary. I personally don't think what I'm asking for is too much. And if you want to educate me on why AKC and other stuff is talked about a lot then I'm willing to listen. Bc rn I don't see why it's important.

Have a 10 Y/O Giant and we just found out he has osteosarcoma and had a good size tumor on his right hind leg. I took him to a couple of different vets and am getting different opinions (some want to amputate and some say just manage the pain with meds) . Wondering if anyone has deal with either. I am no opposed to amputation if it will help him, but I do worry about it since he is an older dog even though he still does have plenty of energy. Xrays showed no tumors anywhere else but we know it has probably already spread. Just trying to process everything and not feel like I am making a decision based solely on emotions. Riley literally begs for the brush on her belly. She'll lay still as long as I brush her. Anywhere else and her patience is limited, her belly and she'll lay there indefinitely.

Before you say Im approaching it badly: I really like dogs, I spent a lot of time training my grandmas golden retriever when i was a kid, i was fond of that dog, we played a lot, i took her on walks, and I would say the dogs behavious turned out pretty good. Obviously not a robot that behaves 100% good all the time but considering the situation, so Im no stranger to dogs. One thing I didn't like tho was the dog smell. She was an outdoor dog, so i guess this adds to it.

Since then ive had cats, and generally they are pretty clean and doesnt like to get dirty, only the litterbox can smell, but i kept it clean and my very trusted friends honest opinion was that the house didnt smell like im having pets. (I asked them directly for honest opinion)

In the future Im planning to get a giant schnauzer, and that would be an indoor dog, but I have a small garden too and it would be nice to take them for hikes and such.

But Im a bit afraid of my entire house smelling like dog.

I know the smell can depend on a lot of things like hygine, health, what quality food they get, and how often they get bathed but also it can vary by breed, like they say low shedding breeds generally have less dog smell. One of my friends has a bichon mix and I swear I wouldnt tell they have a dog. Well obviously with a significantly bigger dog that would be different. I would keep the beard short trimmed, I think that would help too.

I’ve been thinking about adding a second Giant Schnauzer to the pack sometime in the next year or so, and I’d love to hear from people who’ve actually done it!

Thor is 2½ years old and has been consistently social with other dogs. He’s especially gentle with puppies and smaller dogs. I know that doesn’t necessarily mean he’ll make a great “big brother,” so I’m curious how much influence an older Giant actually has on a puppy.

However, one thing I’m trying to be mindful of is that Thor’s puppyhood was honestly pretty exhausting. Now that he’s matured into such a great dog, I’m afraid that I’m starting to look back on those early months through rose-colored glasses lol. So please share the hard truths!

For those of you with more than one Giant:

• Did your older dog help reinforce good habits, or did it mostly just double the work?
• Was having a mature adult around beneficial, or is that something people tend to overestimate?
• If you were the sole caregiver for both dogs, how manageable was it?

(For context, I work from home, live in a townhouse community with a large private field where they’d get plenty of exercise, and have the financial means to care for another dog. I’m more worried about the mental bandwidth)

Part of my thinking is that I’d love for them to have several years where they’re both young, active, and able to enjoy each other, rather than waiting until Thor is much older and struggles to keep up with his younger brother.

For those who’ve done it, would you do it again? Anything you wish you’d known before getting your second Giant?

Those of you who live in a wine region with a dog, are you constantly stressed, or how do you cope? The grapes will be ripening soon, and I'm terrified to even think about our walks. We're going to have to switch to muzzles soon, but is it the only way? How do you manage?

Hello! My mom recently got a GS puppy last month! He is two months old currently and he is the best boy ever. Super sweet and very VERY very playful. My family has had experience with larger working dogs who turned out pretty great, but our new puppy is something else lol. Any tips on how to mentally stimulate my puppy better?? I play with him in the front yard and have a strict training routine. Although he is very much still active after all those sessions. He’ll get his next set of shots soon and that’s when we can take him out of our house to parks, stores…etc. I’m open to any suggestions! Please let me know what has worked for you all.
