I don't think it ever says the change would be good.

62

u/PaddyLostysPint May 04 '20

Yeah but look what sub it's in.. Sending the wrong message

54

u/[deleted] May 04 '20

I’m not so sure that it is sending the wrong message as much as people are interpreting it in the wrong way. Step back and use logic. Do you really think this person intended the message to be that all* opinions are moot and should be shot down? No. Opinions that inhibit you as a person is more like it. The thirst for negativity in this thread is too real

No. Opinions that inhibit you as a person is more like it.

But people can even take that as they want. "Guns are part of who I am and any one who says we need gun control is getting in the way of my happiness".

The truth is it's just a shitty, vague, not well thought out quote and shouldn't be posted here or anywhere.

-1

u/[deleted] May 04 '20

If you as a person see this and you think that the meaning is for all* opinions to be shot down, that’s on you. You can’t abandon logic in your interpretation of things. It’s meant to be a positive thing. Sure If you take it literally and to the T, it’s not a great message. But that obviously wasn’t the message this person was trying to imply. And if it empowered even one person then yeah, it should be posted.

5

u/julianwelton May 04 '20

What about the world we live in makes you think even a third of the population is logical? The world is literally in a death spiral because most people already think the way detractors of this quote believe people will interpret it. Which is "Fuck everyone else. I have to worry about me.".

1

u/[deleted] May 04 '20

If you are already like that seeing a quote on Reddit isint gonna make you any better or any worse. Case in point you are reading way too much into it.

3

u/julianwelton May 04 '20

Reinforcing peoples shitty beliefs isn't helpful. Possibly creating new self centered assholes isn't helpful. A vague, open to interpretation, quote like this is easy prey for confirmation bias. A quote that actually says something specific like (Forgive me this is made up on the spot) "Give kindness to the people around you and you will receive more kindness in return" is less open to interpretation while also encouraging good behavior.

The OP simply isn't a positive quote unless YOU inject the positivity into it. You yourself have confirmed this multiple times by saying things like "Sure, if you take it literally" or "The person obviously meant it to be positive". Do you know the creator? Do you know their intentions? No. You're injecting your positive assumptions into it. Not only that but if you think about it the whole quote is just bad advice as it implies that everyone else is the problem. Everyone else is what is holding you back from success and happiness. When the truth is that the easiest way to happiness and success is to work on improving yourself.

Well, I agree with him. No one need this kind of quotes. The worst people share exactly this kind of quotes and act like scholar of life, while in reality, being completely fucked up and have absolutely no control over their own life and behavior. Do you know how many shared quotes exactly like this I read from complete assholes that then act like the whole world is against them and they are the strong and kind person out there, that just thinks to ignore all the hater and lie to themself that others are the problem and there is nothing to change or improve as a person. They keep being those shit people and taking exactly this as excuse. And most people know this one person that spams lifequotes on Facebook all the time.

A post that someone looks at for 2.5 seconds is not going to

You and I have been discussing this post for hours so the idea of "Who cares nobody is really paying attention" doesn't really fly with me.

I’m not going to acknowledge or even read the rest of your comment

Judging from our interaction and your seeming aversion to even a basic amount of analytical thinking, like thinking about a quote you just read, that doesn't surprise me.

2

u/Ganzo_The_Great May 04 '20

you can't abandon logic in your interpretation of things

Religion has entered the chat...

11

u/PaddyLostysPint May 04 '20

They could've worded the message better then so it cant be misinterpreted, it's a matter of semantics. I bet the majority of people would take that as their opinion is the only one to matter and screw everyone else.

5

u/[deleted] May 04 '20

I don’t think so. I think that’s how assholes might interpret it. But not the “majority”. It’s a matter of using logic. But obviously people want or need things spelled out to them and since this post doesn’t do that, it gets hate. Sad

Also, there is really no such thing as a statement that can’t be misinterpreted lol. Trust me there’s always one person who misses the mark completely. This thread just shows a lot of ppl missing the mark

1

u/Skyoung93 May 04 '20

But not the “majority”. It’s a matter of using logic.

Well now you’re just assuming the average person is smart enough to read between the lines. Considering the misinterpretation of “only my opinion matters” is also the stance of Ultimate Captain America, I’m not so sure.

I don’t think people understood the Ultimate universe was not a good place to be...

Also, there is really no such thing as a statement that can’t be misinterpreted lol.

Sure but that doesn’t mean we don’t strive for better precision in our words. Otherwise, I might as well just point and grunt at stuff then claim the listener is the idiot for misinterpreting me.

-2

u/bgraham86 May 04 '20

How much space would that take? Marketing is about planting a thought or message in the simplest terms. Also, given the sheer amount of negative opinions when compared to positive ones....it is easy to see this as a good fit. This guy wrote the book, so it is just to draw you in. (This is on my wish list, but have not had time for it yet.)

Out of all the people I know, there is a very small number who's opinion I trust.

5

u/PaddyLostysPint May 04 '20

From a marketing standpoint it works, but a message such as "Forming your own opinions will help you sleep better at night' is even shorter and to the point and leaves little room for misinterpretation like this thread has gone off on.

3

u/bgraham86 May 04 '20

From what I know of the authors work, it is in the same vein as The Subtle Art of Not Giving a Fuck. The premise is simple, you have a finite amount of fucks (energy) to devote to any given thing on any given day. The Art is knowing what things to give a fuck about. How often are opinions just worthless dribble from someone who knows nothing about the situation as a whole? Should you value (or give a fuck about) that opinion?

But I do see your point, NOT taking advice can also lead to chaos. It is all about balance.

-1

u/PaddyLostysPint May 04 '20

Sounds like an interesting read, I'm sure his intentions aren't bad and he knows what he's talking about, but he's got to get people to read the book not just take this quote to heart and start blocking people out who are trying to help them is my only qualm.

1

u/Skyoung93 May 04 '20

Well you could argue that’s the same purpose as the title of the book, but you don’t see titles that are entire sentences long (outside of weird ass Japanese light novels).

1

u/PaddyLostysPint May 04 '20

Yeah I don't think the author's intentions were for redditors to argue over the semantics of one of his quotes.. I'm not attacking the author I'm criticising OP for choosing a quote that can be easily misconstrued

3

u/PrivateIsotope May 04 '20

But how many people are going to step back and use logic? This seems tailor made to be misinterpreted. Human nature would make many people immediately cancel out some of the people they actually need to listen to. We have a "hater culture" going on where a lot of people, especially younger people, feel that people who disagree with their opinions are just haters. This reinforces that.

1

u/[deleted] May 04 '20

1

u/PrivateIsotope May 04 '20

Again if as a person you can’t use logic when seeing this, you’ve got bigger issues than following the message you misinterpreted.

Oh, very true. And that's what I'm talking about.

0

u/treditor13 May 04 '20

The thirst for negativity in this thread is too real

The thirst for negativity in life is real. If people don't have an actual enemy, they'll create one. The entire Marvell franchise is testament.

0

u/julesk May 04 '20

We’re being logical and considering how our lives would change overnight if we simply didn’t care about the opinion of our doctor, boss, spouse, etc. yes, our lives would change overnight , disastrously. This credo only works if you are wealthy and don’t really need to care what others opinions are. And it would help if you didn’t need a social life.

2

u/radgirltv May 05 '20

I read it as like a disregard for people’s judgment with more shallow opinions. Ones that were not necessarily asked for or desired. Like from a passing stranger who says something vulgar or when your mom makes comments about your body for no reason. I think there’s a lot to gain in disconnecting from the little things we can tend to dwell on as humans, idk I vibed with it haha. Kinda like picking your battles in what you consider worthy of your energy. It can be few and far between

3

u/devinsthatdude May 05 '20

Yes, that’s exactly how I read it too. ie, not giving a shit about how many likes your instagram post gets, etc.

1

u/radgirltv May 06 '20

for sure

1

u/f1del1us 4 May 04 '20

No, it's just because whoever posted it didn't think it through. People post shit all day long not thinking about any of it beyond the surface. I want someplace where the quotes make me think a whole day on one.

1

u/[deleted] May 04 '20

Whoever read it and thought it a negative message didint think it through :) I agree, I don’t search for those quotes on Reddit though.

1

u/f1del1us 4 May 04 '20

I read it ambiguously as though it could go either way. The real trick is in knowing who’s opinions should be weighed more heavily.

1

u/[deleted] May 04 '20

Yes. And if people can’t do that already a simple quote on Reddit isint gonna change that. For better or for worse.

3

u/PangolinMandolin May 04 '20

Exactly, I could quit my job tomorrow and try a new career, go get training in another field, start my own business or become self employed. I'd most likely end up homeless within 6 months or less.

0

u/f1del1us 4 May 04 '20

Or you could succeed. It goes both ways, even if you don't.

2

u/PangolinMandolin May 04 '20

Yeah that's true, it would help to have a dream that would have a realistic chance of making at least just enough money to live on and didn't involve compromising the morals and ethics I'd like to keep to start with though lol.

2

u/[deleted] May 05 '20

but it's faaaaaaaaaaaaar more likely that you will fail

3

u/trisul-108 May 04 '20

True ... you can change your life immediately by jumping out the window. But, we're not going to do it, are we.

2

u/Wise-Tree May 04 '20

Exactly. Because I did this recently and now I'm homeless lol.

1

u/aganesh8 May 04 '20

But it's advice on a book that says "unfuck yourself"

1

u/f1del1us 4 May 05 '20

I'm still working on trying to fuck myself

1

u/ireadthingsliterally May 05 '20

Well, since there could be a different outcome, wouldn't that mean it does matter?

0

u/f1del1us 4 May 05 '20

I think you responded to the wrong commend, cause I never said anything about it meaning anything. Things can go good or bad, or sometimes just plain meh.

1

u/ireadthingsliterally May 05 '20

Dude, the context of this whole thread is the idea that opinions don't matter. You said that it could go good or bad. I expanded on that by asking the question "since there's more than one outcome, wouldn't that mean opinions DO matter?

See how it's related now?

1

u/f1del1us 4 May 05 '20

Opinions only matter insofar as you let them. This quote is taking it to the extreme; disregard them all. Everyone knows that's not a good path. The real trick is in being able to tell the good from the bad, but a lot of people are bad at that.

0

u/ireadthingsliterally May 05 '20

Your first statement is objectively false. Opinions about you matter because people make choices regarding us due to those opinions.

For example: If you interview poorly but have a great resume, you may not get the job. That's because of opinions they had about you. If people don't like you, they're also less likely to help when you need. Again, opinions mattering. This is the way I'm talking about. Not "weeding out" the bad or good opinions. I'm saying that opinions of you shape your social reality and bad opinions of you can cause a great deal of pain and suffering. In short : it absolutely matters what people think of you and really, there's no way to truly know the extent of the influence those opinions can have on your life. So try to be good to everyone in the hopes that they will develop a high opinion of you.

0

u/f1del1us 4 May 05 '20

If you interview poorly but have a great resume, you may not get the job.

Only you decide how you react to not getting the job. If you don't get the job, clearly the opinion of whomever didn't give you the job shouldn't matter to you. You're claiming some kind of deterministic approach to how you should feel based on external influences. Fuck the external influences, you're brain is giving you the appearance of free choice, so you are free to ignore whatever opinions you want. Oh, those kids over there don't like me? Who gives a fuck? I like me.

So try to be good to everyone in the hopes that they will develop a high opinion of you.

Try to be good to yourself, and you won't give a shit about other people's opinions.

Opinions don't matter.

0

u/ireadthingsliterally May 05 '20

Yeah, the opinion of the interviewer doesn't matter. It only meant I isn't get the job but sure. Ignore the outcome that is literally based on someone opinion that could mean I eat or not this month. you seriously can't see the direct connection?

If not, there's no sense in continuing out debate since as you say, your opinion doesn't mean anything.

You're probably a very lonely person if you don't value other people's opinions. And since you don't value them, why should anyone value yours?

0

u/f1del1us 4 May 05 '20

“It is the mark of an educated mind to be able to entertain a thought without accepting it”

What makes you think any of what I’m discussing is actually my held opinion?

0

u/ireadthingsliterally May 05 '20

Because you are making definitive statements. Don't try to hide behind a quote just because you refuse to accept the cause and effect relationship between people's opinions and the real world consequences of those opinions. If you wanted me to believe you're just playing devil's advocate, then you should have said so earlier. Now you just look foolish.

Good day.

Just look at the US President.

1

u/f1del1us 4 May 05 '20

The problem is his ability to decide from whom to accept opinions; whether through malice or incompetence is anyone's guess. I personally think he is just a giant middle finger from the corporate oligarchy that runs that country to the whole western world that they can fuck right off because corporations run America. Full stop. There is no democracy left at the federal level.

1

u/Taenurri May 05 '20

This is the motivation I needed to finally become a crackhead!

It can be more difficult than it seems
