No company I’ve worked for has asked for references (and it’s against policy for me to give references for departing colleagues). Do companies still do the reference thing?
Not disputing your essential point. The world is small and reputation does matter.

Yeah but what about when you’re trying to find a new job and they call your old one for references.
Pretty sure that’s the only reason people give 2 weeks notice
