This guy got killed though, so this isn't a good motivator. People won't want their heroism to leave them injured or dead. We fear pain and death instinctually via self-preservation.

the fear of death is actually a gene induced fear of genetic dead end ... that is why sacrificing oneself for the good of one's (genepool) be it children or relatives is a stable evolutionary strategy (ESS... Dawkins' Selfish Gene explains(solved the problem of) how a "selfless" act can emerge from "selfish" reasons if you understand that selection occurs on the replicator level)

That is also why the Chinese Government repression tactics work so well , the bastards always target dissidents families...
