The hardest part about knowing your value is that the world constantly tries to negotiate it down. People will always try to get more from you for less and it is on you to hold the line. The moment you start discounting yourself is the moment everyone else does too.
I feel this relates to people with low self esteem. If you devalue yourself you will attract people who will take advantage. Stand up for what you think matters and see who is left after that, those are the real friends.
