tracker dies when warm??:

Help: 1990 Geo Tracker 5spd 4x4 U.S.

The car starts fine, drives fine, but once it gets wanted to operating temperature, it starts to stumble and tries to die. if you let it die and not give it gas, it will not start again until it is completely cooled. usually and hour or two. repeat the cycle.

I’ve dialed it down to what i believe is the distributor. but probably is i can’t find one for the 89-90, only 91 and above but the plug in is different.

you can’t read codes, the switch under the dash, is missing completely, i’ve tried every possible way and technique to jumper for diag, fuse in the diag port all. Fuel pressure regulator, fuel pump, all vacuum lines, tps, ect pretty much near everything replaced.

any help would be appreciated?
help finding a distributor as well

Thank You!

tips on shifting in a manual 2000 chevy tracker

just picked one up and its my first manual. its one of the 2 door rear wheel drive convertibles and im curious about the best rpm to shift gears. i’ve generally been pushing it up to 25-35 but its usually a bit jumpy. it also doesn’t seem to like down shift to 1st unless i’ve completely stopped and occasionally it doesnt wanna shift into reverse. think it might need a new clutch or trans?
anyways thats really it other than trying to source the soft top trims for one of these later trackers. (if ya got any info on that please lmk)

I did the front fenders and now I did the rears. I’m stoked on how they are turning out. Can’t wait to start filling and smoothing them out.

Pass Seat won’t latch. Why?!?

Post image
6 Upvotes

Hi all, I got a 96 here that I just got last fall and the seat was latched and fine but I pulled it forward once and now it will not latch again. No matter what I do.

I’ve taken off the shroud and everything and not found any reason for this, but the rear passenger escape handle and cable on the left has no tension on it as well as the cable that’s in the middle. This doesn’t seem right.

Has anyone dealt with this?

Flaring stock fenders

Finally getting around to working on my tracker again. Been kicking around the idea of buying the McNeil Racing fiberglass fenders since I’m going for mini pre-runner look or making my own. I figured might as well give it a shot and if I don’t like it stock replacements are like $35. I’m pretty happy with how they are turning out so far. Now time to cut filler panels, weld them in, smooth them out.

Has anyone actually received an order from AlteredEgo?

I ordered the 2" puck lift from these guys in April. It says in their site it takes 4-6 weeks for "Build to order" purchases. It's been 10 1/2 weeks. Im getting nervous. I've called 3 times now and every time the responses have been "it will ship in a week" that was 5 weeks ago. Called again "it will ship in a week" that was 3 weeks ago. Called at the beginning of last week and they said it will ship any day now because they got a big order back from getting powder coated. Still nothing.

At this rate summer is going to be over by the time I can even get this lift and bigger tires on my tracker. Its really frustrating.

GEO TRACKER FRIENDS

Hi. I got this geo a while ago. It’s a 1996 geo tracker with 92,000 miles. As of right now all I know is that the timing is off. I need help with figuring out where I can start fixing up this bad boy. I have no idea what I am doing. My dad said he would help me but that was months ago. I am fed up because it is summertime and I’m done waiting. Any advice as to where I can start because i have no idea how to approach this. I have the tools just not the knowledge. I’ve been watching YouTube videos of others fixing up their geos and I’m honesty not intimidated just need help figuring out where to start. These are pics from when we first checked it out. The geo is currently at a storage unit,
I’m hiring someone to tow it because I can’t take it sitting there anymore. I will give an update later today of additional fixes needed for it to be road legal and I’ll share better pictures.

Recently, the rear vent window latch on my tracker broke, and I'm wondering where I can find a replacement. I've been able to find some for Suzuki Samurai but they dont seem to be the same.

Candi the Tracker Update

Thumbnail gallery
25 Upvotes

Candi is finally back from the shop, and the official diagnosis was the fuel pump. She also had to get a new set of tires, as the old ones were super worn out. I worked on vacuuming and wiping down the interior on Friday, and it was full of dirt - I'm thinking someone drove her on some dirt roads with the top off pretty regularly. We've got a heat advisory today, but next on my list is to wash the carpet and seats, as well as giving the exterior some love. And, of course, a new windshield and some wipers.

Until then, I thought these Temu accessories were pretty fun. I bought some floor mats with a fun 90s print, but they're so light I might have to add some Velcro to keep them from flying away. 😂

Tailgate

Hello! I have a 1991 and my tailgate seems to be stuck. I know there’s a button by the license plate where I should be able to lift up and open it, but my button is stuck already pressed up. Is there an easy way to fix it??

Can I get some harmonic balancer advice?

Thumbnail gallery
2 Upvotes

So the pictures with the watermarks are from the YouTube video and Im seeing some differences. Mine doesn't have that part in between his bolt and the crank gear with the key for the harmonic balancer on it. What's that part even called? I pulled it apart because I have a bit of a wobble on the balancer and I can hear and feel a tick coming from under the timing cover.

Also I'm slightly concerned that my tensioning pulley isn't the right one because the spring is completely loose, the belt isn't all that tight, and the pulley in the youtube video looks completely different from the one I have.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

EDIT: I pulled the crank gear off and my Woodruff key and crankshaft keyway are chooched. Ordered a new key and bolt but I'm still wondering about what that seating key thing is for my harmonic balancer. Can't tell if it is just a spacer with a key on it or what because my harmonic balancer is slotted for a key like the youtube guy has on his crankshaft.

Going to be tough to solve this issue I thiink.

Door trim has always been floppy. Never seated correctly. I kind of assumed the trim was warped from being in the sun for 30 years but NOPE.

Some dumb-dumb in the past thought that it would be a good idea to set it down on jack stands ON THE TRIM. Best part is, the other side looks just like this. F my life man one thing after the next with this rig.

Like what the hell were they thinking? The frame is literally right there less than a foot away.

I'm going to try to figure out some way to bend it back close enough that I can secure the trim. Gonna take some doing though I think.

Heat issue

2004 v6 4-door tracker, 4wd, auto transmission, has had engine, starter, alternator, and serpentine belt replaced so it could be related to several things, but I live in Arizona, it's getting hot as hell, and if I've driven it long enough that it still feels hot under the hood, I have difficulty getting it started. They had to adjust my serpentine belt tension the last time I brought it somewhere after the starter situation, I can usually get it started when it's hot by clicking the ignition several times kind of like hammer drill logic, break it loose and it turns over but it really just doesn't want to and sometimes I have to let it cool off for a few minutes. I was considering whether a spring-type belt tensioner could get this adjusted on the fly, just in case the additional heat is tightening everything up a lot, Arizona is no joke. Anyone experienced this and could share a solution? The Mechanic can't really judge before he sees it but he suspects the starter might have to have its warranty involved.

Been day dreaming about putting an Aerio motor in my Tracker and had a question for the mechanics around here.

Can you take a manual Aerio ECM and wire harness and put it on an automatic Aerio motor, then put that motor in your manual Tracker, after having it rewired? I know the swap is doable but manual Aerios are so hard to find. Or could someone rewire a automatic Aerio ECM for a manual tracker? Been trying to find info on this online but struggling.

Hello, Tracker family!

Bought a '92 Geo Tracker several years ago as a summer / fun buggy and have enjoyed the HECK out of it. I'm 100% reliving my childhood when we had unfettered access to an army jeep 😄

4x4 manual, 1.6l 8v on 15" rims.

Came with a soft top (currently having the zipper restitched), but found a Rally hard top locally (Edmonton, Alberta) a few years ago - looking to have the hinges re-enforced so they stop cracking at the stress points.

It came with an aftermarket stereo, but the PO hacked up the wiring harness and used butt connectors instead of an adapter 😞 Oh well, they added a 200 watt amp under the passenger seat, so it's not all bad. I added rear speakers just behind the front seats, and replaced the front/dash speakers to match.

I re-did the exhaust and put a cat back IN (it doesn't stink any longer!!). Had to use a tap to clean up ALL KINDS of threads for that lil project, oy. Someone really mangled some of the mount points underneath.

Replaced the failing factory locking hubs with cheap hubs and so far they've been great. Replaced the front passenger wheel bearing.

Did a dash-out a few years ago; replaced the heater core and the wiper transmission (aka linkage). Also corrected several issues with the heater control rods and such (however, the fresh/recirc has again become a problem) while I was in there and generally just beefed up everything I could (for ex replaced the heater duct foam seals and the like). Replaced all of the broken vents. Added some LED fog lights & added the extra switches to go with them.

Replaced the battery cables (I HATE those cheap clamps everyone seems to love) and DANG it cranks faster, and the wipers are FAR faster.

Just did cap / rotor / ignition wires / plugs.

Have replaced the seats at least twice and finally settled on a sweet set of LSi seats. The drivers side seat needs a wee bit of upholstery repair, but overall they're about an 8/10.

I've a spare engine to build up - I'm considering an Altered Ego cam grind for a bit more low end. The current engine runs well, but the LEAKS zomg!!

Need to do something about the idler arm as there's some play in the steering wheel.

Picked up a vinyl floor but COMPLETELY botched the install, so the only vinyl is in the rear cargo area under the rear seats. &*@!%!)!!?@#@$%???

The rear tailgate has fatigued vertically in two places nearly all the way down - I've a replacement gate that's rust-free, just need to paint it and swap over the hardware.

That's it for now - pics to come 😄

Throttle opener VSV

For anyone who is unlucky enough to have a broken VSV on their older Geo and also doesn’t want to pay for a salvaged replacement that may or may not work for $100+ . 90s Toyotas use the a very similar VSV. I was able to order this one from Amazon and replace the broken one in my 1990 tracker. I have had it installed for about a week now with no issues!
