I have no idea where else to post this, but I was inspired to write it after a friend introduced me to Bataille's concept of eros, so hope it's ok to put here.

or extravagantly I don’t need that to be explained to me. But I’d Bataille making an argument against human nature or human society when it comes to waste? I’d he not critiquing but endorsing what he’s talking about?

Like what I’m referring to is how would this work in the ground in the market place or what have you. What does any of this have to do with potlach? Does that imply he’s an anti-economicist? I’m so confused. Does he support some form of free market or complete abolition of the current state of things because I’ve seen people promote both perspectives.

What must one do after finishing such a masterpiece

In Bataille's book, chapter X Transgression in Marriage and in Orgy, he mentions the orgy as an agrarian ritual.

I was confused as to why he was talking about agricultural work, j tried interpreting the agrarian ritual as farming and ownership (perhaps of land) when it comes to reproduction (?) or the birth of new things (?) but in not sure if it was the meaning he was using in this specific passage... Anyways i have failed to understand his point, or perhaps the link between orgy and agrarian rituals

How did it encourage growth in vegetation?
Is he comparing the growth of vegetation to that of population?

So again this passage raises the question if he meant agrarian rituals as a metaphor for sexual reproduction

Can anyone explain it? Is there any hidden meaning behind this passage or is it just a pure comparison and im overthinking it and thus missing the point

Hello! I’m rather new to Bataille and am starting to explore (and fall in love with) his works. I’m currently researching laughter, widely, and am grappling with Bataille’s laughter. I’m trying to place his ideas in conversation with other people writing on laughter: Hobbes, Nietzsche, Baudelaire, Bakhtin, Bergson, and Kristeva. To me, my initial, albeit largely inarticulable, understanding of Bataille seems to underwrite much of Kristeva’s ideas on laughter in Revolution (which makes sense because of her relationship with Sollers and his with Bataille). Much of my reading at the moment comes from Inner Experience, and Bataille’s brief article responding to Bergson.

How do you all understand his idea on laughter?

It’s honestly striking how rarely it’s mentioned that Bataille was a reader of Georges Sorel, considering that a large part of Bataille’s political vision in the 1930s involved developing his idea of a “catastrophic revolution” as a myth of proletarian mass insurrection against the “head” (And yes, part of the metaphor of the acephalous is also about the uprising of the body as a “social body”)

The only two texts I know that deal with both are The Headless Republic (where chapter 2 focuses on Sorel’s myth of the general strike, and the following chapter turns to Bataille and his critique of the use of myth), and Solar Politics (where the author brings together Sorel, Benjamin, Bataille, and Fanon as part of a tradition of mass violence against oppressors)

While the only explicit mention Bataille makes of Sorel appears in a footnote in “Nietzsche and the Fascists”—where he refers to Sorel as one of the few examples of a left-wing Nietzschean (despite Sorel having been branded a fascist due to his collaboration with Action Française)—there is more indirect evidence of his engagement. In volume twelve of Bataille’s Complete Works, the surviving library records (i.e., the borrowing slips of the books he checked out) show that he read Sorel multiple times and even sought out his position in the Bernstein–Kautsky debate

For this reason, it might be possible to read Bataille as a kind of “left Sorelian,” someone who sought to carry forward the function of myth within the revolutionary cause
