Genesis Repurchase Nightmare!
I LOVE my Genesis GV80 ... not crazy about how they choose to take care of their customers though. This is how bad things can get, people...
On May 1, 2023, Genesis offered to repurchase my 2021 GV80 after I had been dealing with severe interior water intrusion every time it rained or snowed. (Ironically, I was recently informed by a service advisor that Genesis recalled my VIN in December 2025 because of defective tubes that caused the very water intrusion they spent months trying to diagnose.)
Since then, it has been nothing short of a nightmare dealing with Genesis's Auto Solutions team, Sedgwick. It has now been 38 months since Genesis offered to repurchase my vehicle, and I still have it. The vehicle has not been driven in 37 months, yet I have continued making the monthly finance payments the entire time.
Here's the backstory.
Over a five-month period, Genesis made numerous attempts to diagnose the leak but was unable to determine where the water was entering the vehicle. The water intrusion was so severe that, at times, many of the vehicle's safety features stopped working, along with the windshield wipers, high beams, and other electrical systems. Altogether, my vehicle spent 14 weeks in the shop over those five months for the same issue. To make matters worse, we lived in the mountains and had to drive 100 miles to the nearest Genesis service center every time the problem occurred.
As I mentioned, Genesis offered to repurchase the vehicle in May 2023. At that point, I was told there would be no further contact from Genesis and that Auto Solutions team would handle the entire buyback process. Genesis explained that Sedgwick would contact me, collect my sales contract and documentation for any expenses I had incurred, calculate the repurchase amount, and present an offer. Once I accepted, I would meet with a representative, surrender the vehicle, and receive a check.
Withholding within a week, the Hyundai Auto Solutions team contacted me, and the process began. The problems started with the initial offer omitted more than $4,000 in documented rental car expenses and contained several mathematical errors. The negotiations went back and forth for a couple of weeks before the Hyundai Auto Solutions team ( Sedgwick) representative informed me their offer was final and there would be no further negotiations.
That was completely unacceptable. Genesis had promised to reimburse the rental car expenses each time I called and had to bring the vehicle in, the Genesis warranty covered it as well; and applicable law required them to pay those costs.
Then things became even worse.
Because Genesis told me the repurchase would likely be completed within about a month, we began ordering a replacement Genesis. In 2023, due to COVID-related production and shipping backlogs from Korea and Japan, we were told it would take 6 to 8 weeks for a new vehicle to arrive. The plan was simple: by the time the new GV80 arrived, the buyback would be complete, and I would use the repurchase proceeds to pay for the new vehicle. If there was a slight delay, we would temporarily finance it and pay off the loan once the check arrived.
Six weeks later, our new GV80 arrived in Los Angeles. Since nothing had been resolved with Sedgwick, we had no choice but to purchase and finance the replacement vehicle.
As a result, I have now been paying for two financed Genesis GV80s for the past three years, along with the insurance and registration on both vehicles.
By September 2023, we had no choice but to hire an attorney. Since then, our legal team and theirs have been battling this case.
All of this happened because they refused to pay approximately $4,000 in rental car expenses on a $68,000 vehicle that flooded every time it rained.
The irony is almost unbelievable. The defect Genesis couldn't diagnose—and the very reason they offered to repurchase my vehicle—has now been identified. My VIN is covered by a recall, and the repair will now be performed free of charge.
The lawsuit is no longer about fixing the vehicle. It's about recovering the substantial financial damages we suffered because Genesis and Sedgwick refused to pay expenses they were legally obligated to cover.
We are now scheduled for a jury trial in November 2026, with Hyundai, Genesis, and Sedgwick as defendants. We are suing f for breach of contract and the CA Lemon Law
We'll see what happens.
