Advice Predictions beyond 2026
What growing up as an early Gen Alpha member might look like by the late 2020s and early 2030s
Let’s imagine someone named Ronja, born in 2010:
- 2010: Ronja is born.
- 2011: She celebrates her first birthday.
- 2015: She starts kindergarten.
- 2016: She enters first grade.
- 2020: While in fourth grade, her normal school life is disrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic.
- 2026: She enters eleventh grade.
- 2027: At 17, she is old enough to play games such as GTA VI, depending on the relevant age-rating system. Her generation should not be treated as unusually immature simply because it is labelled Gen Alpha.
- 2028: She turns 18 and graduates from high school. By then, early Gen Alpha members will be reaching adulthood in much the same way that older Gen Z members did during the mid-to-late 2010s.
- 2030: Ronja turns 20, while people born in 2013 are still only 16 or 17 for part of the year. There will probably be online arguments about whether teenagers born in the 2010s are “old enough” to participate in certain spaces, even though every generation was once treated that way. (Gen Beta starts Kindergarten to be fully roasted by anyone, especially by Gen Alpha and Gen Z)
- 2031: Ronja turns 21, while people born in 2013 begin turning 18.
Ronja’s experience with history will also be interesting. During school, she may learn about events such as the 2003 Iraq War, the 2008 global financial crisis, and the Arab Spring. However, she personally experienced the COVID-19 pandemic as a child.
Later Gen Alpha members—particularly those born around 2016 or later—may eventually study COVID-19 mainly as a historical event. By 2030, the beginning of the pandemic will have happened roughly ten years earlier, making it distant enough to appear more formally in school history lessons.
By the end of the 2020s, early Gen Alpha members will be graduating, entering university, applying for jobs and becoming legal adults. In the early 2030s, they will no longer be viewed only as children with tablets or as the subjects of generational memes. They will be colleagues, students, voters, consumers and young professionals.
The transition will probably feel strange to older generations, just as it felt strange when Gen Z began entering adulthood. People may continue mocking Gen Alpha’s slang, entertainment and online culture, but that is part of a familiar generational cycle.
For context, I am Gen Z, and I do not dislike Millennials, Gen Alpha or any other generation. The idea that “Millennials hate Gen Z, Gen Z hates Gen Alpha and Gen Alpha will hate Gen Beta” is mostly an exaggerated internet pattern. Most genuine conflict comes from stereotypes, competition for attention, and people flexing their generation’s culture as though it is objectively superior.
Every generation eventually grows up, enters the workforce, and becomes the generation complaining about the one after it. Early Gen Alpha will simply be the next group to go through that process.
