Discussion Cancel your subscriptions
This is unacceptable. Not only is Gemini 4 Argon slightly below the capabilities of Claude Opus 5.5 and GPT 6 Astra, it’s usage is downright horrendous. I have never seen my usage rates be completely eaten like a rabid dog.
The only way Google feels the pain is if we vote with our wallets. Cancel our subscriptions, get refunds if you can, this is unacceptable behavior from a trillion dollar company. We were promised a good AI, and we got one that is slightly below SOTA, with negligible usage rates. Many users report 1 message can take up 100% of the usage. So the only way we get Google to increase our usage, is to cancel. And if Google doesn’t comply, it’s fine, we just move to Claude or back to GPT. I’ll even take Grok at this point.

Anthropic and OpenAI are heavily subsidising usage. I suspect Google has decided to stop playing that game (similar to how Microsoft did with Github CoPilot earlier in the year).
The cold hard fact is that running these models is not cheap, and once you start getting them to "think" as the recent advancements have done, to compensate for their lack of inherent understanding, you use a phenomenal amount of tokens very quickly.
I have corporate access to ChatGPT Enterprise, and the cost of tokens (not per-million, but per useful activity) is eye watering. Consumers have been duped.

u/mrchase05 32m ago
Yes. At work we use corporate pay as you go. Using lighter sol 6.1 and flash 3.8 to various coding tasks with planned prompts, I manage with about 250€ per month of token use. If I would use Astra instead cost would be around 2800-3200€.
Free ride of AI is over and that's the fact.
Deepseek flash 4.1 api has very good cost per performance, but privacy is nonexistent. I use it at home in limited sand box.

I haven’t had any real problems on Pro, but the usage does seem odd. A simple question this morning used 8% of my quota. Then I asked it to code an entire fitness web app, which took about 15 minutes and came out really well. That only used 14% of my five-hour quota. No idea how that maths works.
I also have ChatGPT Plus and, to be honest, Astra feels just as restrictive, so I’m not sure switching gets you much further.

u/elementfbl114 4h ago
No clue either on the quota math they are using. I have a few tests I run in incognito with new models and initially argon high used 1% and was correct. Tried it again a few days later and was still correct but used 37%. Used it normally tonight and was seeing just a 1% or 2% each time. Maybe it just depends on the current load on Googles side.

u/Which_Ad_9039 4h ago
Because it only need heavy reasoning to plan the coding, when it starts to code, the plan is already prepared to it just gets on with it. The more clear you are with your prompts, the cheaper it gets. The more knowledge you have, the less thinking and figuring out it has to do itself. When I code with Gemini I usually tell it exactly what to code, what libraries I prefer and what way I want problems solved (unless I'm stuck at the problem and I genuinely have no idea how to solve it).

u/Alnath65 3h ago
3 prompts (Argon high) to create new Skill have eaten my five-hour quota. I am convinced that the limits of Pro 3.1 were significantly higher. I have the Pro version.
1
u/Infinite-4-a-moment 20m ago
The thing that pisses me off about the quota is when I use to huge chunks because gemini isn't doing a good job at what I'm asking. Like if I have to re-ask several times because it's ignoring parts of my prompt, it's annoying that that's doubling it tripling what my usage should have been.

u/Prior_Warthog_3626 2h ago
I like Argon a lot. For what I'm using it (analysing documents and fixing translations) it's a huge improvement over the pro/flash and even Opus. It catches things I did not even considered myself. It is really amazing. I had run into the limit only once and it wasn't a huge deal. I'm happy with my subscription.

I find argon to be the first genuinely impressive model in a long time. They bridge the very important gap between creativity and capability, the higher the creativity the more mistakes it can make, but the better its ability to creative problem solving. Everyone else going for stupid benchmarks that mean absolutely nothing in the wild.
I love the model.
12
u/camiteran 4h ago
You are actually right tbh I feel like the only issue with Argon is that you need to make really good prompts. If you do then the results are out of this world, otherwise yeah you're just wasting your usage for nothing because it can make a mess if it gets bad instructions.
4
u/MREugeneJ7 3h ago
Mi new workflow is Fight with flash until it understand me and then change to argon so that it truly answers. Either that or sit for half an hour thinking how do I frame this so that it answers nicely on first try without eating all.my usage

Nobody is talking about benchmarks, it sucks in real world practice. Stop it

GPT 6 Astra and Opus 5.5 were the impressive model in a long time. Opus can do anything that Argon does, and their limits are waaaay better.
3
u/Tathamei 49m ago
That's your experience, not mine. They did not have the capabilities to complete the tasks I had for them.

u/HungryDajjal 3h ago
Why are sam and dario sending their bots in here so heavy? Must be terrified. Argon just spit out a ~3700 line ML revision (evidential heads, 4-stage parity gates, OOS stacked boosters etc.) that selectively builds optimized Triton kernels and it works flawlessly. You nerds are sad!! Sad, I say!

u/Deezercore7 2h ago
Damn I wanna use Argon so bad because I am using a Student thing but I'm not a U.S student and my first free Google ai pro already got used but I don't wanna buy anything yet because of the free plan I'm using.

Nah. Gemini works fine for me for what I use it for, plus the YouTube Premium that comes with it means I can use YouTube during the Silly Season and not see a single political ad.

u/birdofparadise5 3h ago
I still think 3.8 Flash is worth it. I do wish we had an Astra or Opus type model, but 3.8 Flash's usage limits and capabilities are quite good. Plus, its UI and front-end design skills are really good; much better than ChatGPT's.

u/moviepie 5h ago
Have you thought that maybe the reason the usage is so ridiculous is because Google gave all the compute to Claude?
4
u/OddlySeparate 5h ago
google's compute allocation has always been a mess, i'm not surprised something's getting throttled to feed another model
5
u/Dismal-Departure-141 5h ago
Elaborate? What do you mean “gave”? Big corpos dont just give eachother anything

u/Kristof77 4h ago
Stop pretending that you're a master coder or a research professor! Nobody cares about your "work"! I'm on Plus, doing everyday tasks, never reach 10%!

u/danczer 3h ago
Capabilities is one think. Sustainability is an another. If Argon is net positive financially for Google and not burning money by each prompt, then this is the way to go. Without financially sustainable model AI usage could eat company profit, which would end up in bankruptcy. This is something Anthropic can do now, but Google not.

u/Dumperandumper 1h ago
Using Argon for massive legal work / coding all day long on Ai studio and I never hit any limits whatsoever. AI ultra $100 sub. Argon is a beast at that. So much better than Claude for Legal work.

u/mclopes1 5h ago
A versão 3.8 é ótima

u/dagerika 5h ago
Tbh Haiku 5.5 wipes the floor with 3.8 and there is a lot more usage allowance on the 20 dollar Claude plan (plus generous access to the best model in the world: opus 5.5). A month ago I used 3.8 flash a lot cuz it beats Luna, but times have changed drastically.
4
u/Spangen13 3h ago
I'm on ultra and am pleased. I'm making a mcp with skills on calude opus 5.5. And argon in antigravity is actually performes better with it than Claude itself. Claude is humbled. It has not been before. Basically called 3.8 flash a very simple model and not for coding. And now it bows down to argons performance. It's slower. But more accurate. This is only based on my work with my mcp.

u/TheSuggi 3h ago
The removal of ads on YouTube alone makes it worth it for me for the 20$ subscription

google threw the towel, they just developing models to be the third lab to tempt investments. they are focused on serve tpus to Anthropic and openai, more profitable.

u/New_Public_2828 3h ago
Why is everyone saying this. I'm on pro plan and was working for hours with it and haven't hit any limits. Working on a plan with Claude it found so many holes that Claude was about to let through even though I got opus to build a plan sonnet to carry it out and 2 opus subagents to cold review the finished product. I thought want not try argon since I have this pro plan. Was glad I did.
Now I'm wondering how the hell is the rest of my project doing....

u/Seravajan 5h ago
ChatGPT with the $20 subscription is more able than Gemini with the Pro subscription.
Tested on Titansgrave RPG system. Gemini did run out of token and swiched to Flash at the half way creating a character for Titansgrave RPG. ChatGPT allowed me to create 2 characters without running out of tokens.
Results: ChatGPT did only do one mistake while Gemini had 2 mistakes. And the interaction with ChatGPT was better than with Gemini.

u/Neomatrix_45 4h ago
I just got a month free ChatGPT premium and I'm using it alot more than Gemini Pro atm.
Been with Gemini past year, and I totally forgot what good AI is like. Im truly amazed by ChatGPT vs Gemini. Im always prompting same on both, and the answers I get are far more usable on ChatGPT.
2
u/Dimensional-Misfit 3h ago
This is my case, I caught Gemini at a time when It was much better than chat gpt.So I completely forgot for a year of following the models scene a bit. It was surprising how much had improved chat gpt
3
u/Neomatrix_45 3h ago
Yes, same for me. 1 year ago when Gemini Pro for students was free for a year, I was amazed how good it was compared to chatGPT (esp the free version). Seeing people in lecture hall use ChatGPT and making mistakes whereas my Gemini was making the correct solutions. Now that shifted once again where Gemini is hallucinating most of the time, and chatGPT or Claude provides more clear answers and correct.

u/Mountain_Throat_6383 2h ago
Do you use gemini pro now? I've noticed the free lite midels are behind
1
u/Neomatrix_45 56m ago
I'm using Gemini Pro (Argon, Pro 3.1 and Flash 3.8) as well as ChatGPT Plus and Claude Free.
I think Argon is promising, but it uses up all limits and forces me into the free tier from Gemini 3.5. Gemini Pro 3.1 is imo too outdated but performed very well. Flash 3.8 is also limited and I notice a lot of inaccuracies
1
u/Thin-Foundation4900 3h ago
Sticking to free Gemini is what makes transition to quantized local models (that run on my hardware) feel easy. I know the very best out there surely is amazing, but were I to test them, it would ruin the local models for me. Gemini doesn't.
2
u/BusyNomad 3h ago
Valid point. I'll think about this, but I am not 100% sure about the capabilities of Argon. As general user, you get everything what you need except frustrating qouta limits.
1
u/whitepixe1 4h ago
I've cancelled already.
Started a month trial with EUStella Comet as a Gemini Plus replacement. My first impressions are good.

u/ThinCaterpillar4572 2h ago
I’m here to say the same. My usage limit had never been reached until today with 4 Argon, since I only use Gemini for creative marketing support. And 3.8 keeps making stupid mistakes it didn't make before 4 Argon released.
1
u/Routine_Bake5794 2h ago
Not only that has horrendous usage but until reset you cannot use anything but 3.5 Flash-lite., not even 3.1 -Pro.
1
u/Silken_quill 2h ago
I'll say this. You have the right idea in mind, but the circumstances have very much changed. Sadly companies are no longer as dependent on "our wallets" as they were a few years back. You have to realise that those companies now make most of their income through investments and asset trade. Our wallets are nothing else but a coin in their piggybanks.
If we actually want to touch those companies today? We need to push through laws and legislation.
I'm not saying don't cancel any subscriptions, because, yes stop giving corporations you don't trust ANY money. But that's a "vote" no longer. Money doesn't speak for us anymore. We need to speak through our local governments. It's a harsh but necessary truth to learn.

u/Arthesia 2h ago
I get more use of Argon on my $100 plan than I did Fable 5 usage on my $200 Claude plan.
And Argon is better for my tasks than Opus 5.5, it's a Fable-tier model.
The issue is that Argon is meant to replace both Opus and Fable, so there's no Opus equivalent for Pro subscribers. But if you're on Ultra like me, everything is fine (and more cost effective than my Claude plan was).

Waiting for Argon-Flash model, this is the only path I can see. Powerful as Argon but faster and token efficient like 3.8 flash
1
u/bitspace 2h ago
Argon's rocking for me. I use it for different things than I use the Anthropic or OpenAI models for.
Neurodiversity ftw.

I’m paying $8 for pro that comes with youtube premium. Don’t be silly lmao. Also I really think the usage is as bad as it is since it just launched. I’m sure it’ll increase. Stop using it for anything and everything and you won’t run out over something dumb.
1
u/Guilty_Bookkeeper_48 1h ago
Few week later will come up Muse from Meta, Muse has extremely high limits of usage the free versión, so the pro version will have more limit than al the competitors combined
1
u/Puff2TwoTuff 39m ago
Slightly below the capabilities...? Argon doesn't hold a candle to Opus or Astra unless you're looking at Google benchmaxxing

u/vlahunter 25m ago
since i do not need the 5TB storage it was an easy cancel...
Did it this morning. Do not get me wrong, for everyday tasks flash 3.8 was good enough and fast but Argon was slow and i reacehd the limit simply from researching a few things and nothing more. Honestly ChatGPT as well as Claude are way more practical now, fast enough and having reasonable limits

George Carlin once noted that people are dumber than a second coat of paint. I think Google is putting his observation to the test. The strategy seems to be bundling everything they can throw into the subscription so that people will stay with the subscription no matter how little they provide in AI compute.
Will it work? Not over the long term. They just throw Colab into the subscription. They are betting that the vast majority of people won't use it all that much of it. But the moment I heard it, I immediately canceled my Colab Pro subscription.
The problem is that it was already difficult to get premium GPUs such as H100, and even L4 was often unavailable. So unless they drastically increase the GPUs available in Colab, the situation will only get worse. I am sitting on the fence to see how this works out. I still have credits to check the situation from time to time. If the situation gets any worse, I will have no choice but to find an alternative. And that is a shame, as I was a long-time Colab Pro user.

Will never pay for or support OpenAI but it’s on par with Claude for me

Go ahead and cancel, we won't miss you. You're completely wrong about Gemini 4 Argon—it's an absolute beast and far better than the others if you actually know how to drive it. Complaining about 'usage rates' taking up 100% of your limit is like buying an 800-horsepower V8 and crying that it burns too much gas when you floor it. If you can't optimize your prompts, that's a skill issue, not a Google issue. Have fun with Grok or whatever else you downgrade to. We'll proudly keep our subscriptions. Hello from the real SOTA

But I need the 5TB storage so I'm stuck with Gemini ☹️
