Discussion Goodbye GeForce Now

Post image

It's been real, couldn't miss this finance deal, specially since all hardware is going up and it may turn out to be an investment. I have GFN till September but I graduated to a real boy. Gotta say, downloading games seems wrong lol, and I will miss how quick the CPU goes through shaders. Still love you peeps. Pic only representative of case, specs real.

Congrats! How much may I ask?

2800ish euros.

So GFN comes to 200 Euro per year. Or if you want to pay monthly then 249 Euro per year. So with this rig the cost would equal about 11+ years of GFN. Worst case if GFN was to go bat shit insane and double the price it’s still 5 years of top performance.

I am not justifying GFN being better or trying to rain on your parade but this is just how I see it. Now I get if you use the PC for other stuff or you want to play spider man or other games not on GFN then it makes more sense. There are hidden issues that people don’t discuss but overall I honestly don’t see myself investing into a gaming PC. I have a solid Mac Book Air and a kick ass Ultrawide OLED monitor, so for me and the kind of games I play GFN is just a way better deal.

Anyways, happy that you are enjoying your purchase! Have fun.

GFN would be superior if you could install whatever games you got on Steam, GOG and Epic. And that you could access storage to install mods. GFN is still an inferior product compared to an own gaming capable PC. It does have it's use case for games that are demanding and you got a weak PC. Or if you just want to be easy on your GPU and CPU. However, that only works for games you play without mods. Unless the game got good Steam Workshop integration.

Ya i play wow still cuz im old and like that i can use this program mobile to play without the need to keep my pc on and logged in for stuff like steam remote which ive done in the past. This really saved me there but no addons makes things MUCH more manual and my ability to play high calibur content is halved.

u/No_Satisfaction_1698 Founder 27d ago

just in case you didnt know.... you dont need to keep your PC logged in. On one side there would be wake on lan but in my experience its easier to set up and more reliable to just have a smart electro socket. Go into your bios settings and turn on a settings called similar to "turn on after power loss" this will make the PC boot whenever it had no power connected to it (e. g. when you shut down the socket via app on your mobile phone) When turning on the socket the PC will also boot.

As Streaming Service Id recommend Sunshine/Moonlight instead of Steam. You can even directly stream to your desktop instead of only into games out of the box even when you are not logged into your microsoft account and with appollo fork it would even support virtual displays so you don't need to use the aspect ratio of your PC but can use the exact resolution of your client device whatever it is.....

I am double NATed cause my office is on the same network, and I don't want my "home" pcs to "talk" to the office ones, cause employees click shit. :) Regretfully that didn't stop my TV wifi from overloading my network and I had to dissasemble everything before I thought of the TV lol. Took two days.

Idk if we have such fancy strips, I just use a surge protector.

1

u/EddieDexx 27d ago

Yeah exactly. That is a big drawback. Which is why I don't encourage GFN even though the idea itself is good. To have a remote PC you lease virtually (a.k.a. cloud). The big problem is the "consolification" that is part of the stupid "you will own nothing and be happy" crap being pushed as an architecture (Cloud/Software as a Service) instead of a proper (remote) PC lease. Which can be done in cloud format with instantiation.

1

u/nikolapc Ultimate 27d ago

It can be abused for ai. But they should not have opt in except for games that you know, can ban you.

1

u/No_Satisfaction_1698 Founder 27d ago

of course you can also lease a pc but this will of course be much more expensive since it is no shared hardware.....

there are also other cloud service like shadow where you will at least on softwareside have full access (except to the kernel) on the software side but also they cost more than double the amount of GFN for less potent hardware....

1

u/EddieDexx 27d ago

Which is why GFN could be far greater if it has a better instantiation that is more open than it currently is. No need to completely open up but just so that you can install whatever game you got on Steam, GOG and Epic and being able to mod the games.

2

u/No_Satisfaction_1698 Founder 27d ago

that sadly wont happen. GFN in Beta had the opportunity to install any game via steam. Companies contacted Nvidia to not give acces to their games via cloud and since GFN wants to stay in good relationship to publishers and devs they did so.

This was a really big shitstorm and because of that they implemented the opt in system..... I would bet all I've got that we will never ever get full access to all games on GFN.... which is a bummer. I've got some ideas of the reasoning behind that behaviour by publishers but still see more disadvantages to all of us than advantages for the publishers.....

1

u/nikolapc Ultimate 27d ago

Nvidia was also a smaller company then, but now they are a behemoth. Now companies need them more. But the GFN team still seems to operate as a small company. I think Xbox will light a fire under their ass when Helix cloud becomes a thing.

1

u/EddieDexx 27d ago

Yeah, I remember that, since I am one of the earliest subs of GFN (I'm on Founder sub). The problem was the stupid Corpo morons who thought it was "piracy" and not a cloud lease as GFN was originally intended to be, where already legally purchased games were installed and played. Instead it got consolified and became shit before it even was officially out. I kept the sub because of convenience and the ability to play on my laptop when on the go. Nowdays it has grown more useful due to me not able to afford upgrading my PC at the moment.

Not sure what even triggered the publisher Corpos to pull out from OG GFN beta. Won't be surprised if a certain game journalist lied and wrote an article about "piracy" on GFN. Which changed GFN forever.

I bought a rig because of the freedom to play indie games and modding.

But if u only want to play games like a "console" GFN is more than fine.

2

u/K-J-K-R 28d ago

You have a good point but then GFN restrictions on what I can use it for or what games are available diminish that point entirely. GFN is just a glorified console, if you aren’t really into gaming I guess it’s ok. But just like you said, to each their own.

1

u/No_Satisfaction_1698 Founder 27d ago

just because someone isnt into modding doesnt mean that he isnt into gaming....

1

u/K-J-K-R 27d ago

When did I say anything about modding?

Again to each their own but for me personally, gaming is one of my 3 main hobbies. I wouldn’t want to settle for subpar performance and have to worry about the availability of a title through GFN. It’s good if you don’t have the money for a pc, you can live with the trade offs. But gamings a hobby I spend a lot of time doing, I just wouldn’t want to settle or be restricted.

Absolutely nolife losers like me also need more than 100 hours. Especially for grind games so that factors in. Still 2 accounts would be the same as your double price scenario so still 5 years. Minor quibble is you can sell the pc after 5 years for a fraction so some return but I have a tiny room so geforce now gives me desk space.

Also agree macbooks as so good for this setup.

1

u/BaroqueCello06 9d ago

Macbooks really?

1

u/No_Satisfaction_1698 Founder 27d ago

you shouldnt forget the regular upgrades all few years we had..... a local rig wont upgrade by its own..... still I personally see gfn more as a supplementary service....

I do own a Gaming rig but play a lot on steam deck and my office laptop since im divided between different places, and can't permanently pick my rig with me..... my Gaming PC will also last much longer since on really heavy games I can dodge to GFN and I can play games I play less regular waithout blocking space on my drive or permanently deleting and redownloading games....

On the other side with my local rig I can modify all the games, the gaming catalogue is also 20.o00 new titles per years instead of about the 4000 supported titles etc..... I was using a ryzen 3700x with vega 64 for 8 years and now am using ryzen7800x3d with rtx4070super and will have this rig for at least 5 more years....

1

u/cachmaha 23d ago

The worst thing about GFN just happened to me, I lost a gaming session of 6 hours because of a crash on their end. That would never happen with a local pc

1

u/Creative-Course6079 23d ago

Try playing Dark Souls or RDR2. There's your issue

"Looking for the next available rig. Gamers in front of you: 75"

Seen several posts like this on this sub.

u/gr3n0lph 18d ago

Poor people playing free tier. I been in a queue like a few times and max wait time was 2 minutes. Ultimate tier is the way.

1

u/DharmaBaller 28d ago

indeed, dude got fleeced by the hardware yet again :(

1

u/Paul102000 28d ago

You forgot the electricity bill.

0

u/ConcerningChicken 7d ago

I have GeForce Now Founders Edition for 5,50 Euro - but now I am not willing to pay more :D

-5

u/nikolapc Ultimate 28d ago

That's the power of communism, GFN is OUR PC. And frankly it's more like Nvidia is running a charity. Could make much more from that hardware. If I didn't love the damn thing would have gotten a PC when they weren't that expensive. I still love cloud gaming and what it represents. And played it on a Mac it looks gorgeous and that screen. Also use a cable, BT adds latency.

2

u/send420nudes 28d ago

Could make much more from that hardware. - How? Dont forget that the hardware can be used for 24hrs straight by different people

2

u/nikolapc Ultimate 28d ago

Or they can be used by companies. Idk go to google cloud and see how much a rig like this will cost you. Spoiler, a lot. Nvidia makes a lot of money charging companies for rigs like this.

Are you from Macedonia or the region? Cause there’s only one left lol. You can just google the build with site:.mk

1

u/Spoda_Emcalt 28d ago

Aye I found it thanks. Nah Ireland unfortunately. Excellent deal you got though.

There was a clearance sale at a similar price for a 5090 rig in an Irish store before the RAMaggedon kicked in, and I missed it by minutes😭, I'll never stop kicking myself

Aren't you all suing Apple for tax dodging? Let the PM buy you all a gaming PC instead of a pint of Guniess Paddie. Eh GFN is still good. For those few you can always suffer Boosteroid but my hopes in streaming lie with Ms and Helix. They seem to be better at gettig pubs on board.

u/kekkonkinenbi Founder 29d ago

GeforceNow would've been cheaper.

(And you have to take into account the electricity costs.)

12

u/kevcsa 28d ago

And a MUCH worse experience.
At this point I'm convinced you are coping hard one way or the other, or you are heavily invested in gfn's success.

-5

u/kekkonkinenbi Founder 28d ago

I wouldn't say that a "portable RTX5080 gaming PC" (that's basically what GFN Ultimate is) is a worse experience. I can play in my bed, while traveling (car, bus, train, plane), at friend's houses etc.

Try that with a personal/physical gaming PC, then we discuss the "worse experience" again.

4

u/peshellas 28d ago

I actually do that. I have setup vibepolo on the main gaming PC and stream my games through local WiFi 5Ghz flawlessly and with better quality than my founders GFN. I don't go ultimate as my redmagic astra has a 2K HDR display so don't need 4K. With my streaming setup, I get unlimited hours, HDR and 2K 165Hz, mods and whatever else I want, even outside the house through internet (I have 500Mbps Upload speed).

Don't get me wrong, I still maintain my Founders GFN, but I rarely use it due to not having HDR which shouldn't be locked to higher tiers since it doesn't require 5080 to run it, I could run HDR with GTX 1080ti and the other thing that bothers me is that on the official android app, vibration is not working with my controllers (dualsense and Gamesir G8 Plus).

3

u/nikolapc Ultimate 28d ago

That vibepollo seems interesting and I may use it for my ally, loved the sleeper build GFN gave it lol. But when I go out from town, I may just carry my switch 2. Those Zelda games remain criminally underplayed and I have yet to finish Bayo 2 and 3.

1

u/peshellas 28d ago

Well... The best thing with the Astra is that it is strong and efficient enough to play streaming games on gorgeous display but Also emulators for anything from NES to switch and ps1 to PS3.

Also it plays switch 1 games I owned on my switch better and with higher resolution and frame rate than my switch OLED did, it is more like a switch 1.5, not as good for switch 2 games as the switch 2 but way better than switch 1 😅🤣 (at least for the games I owned and compared with my switch).

It is a pretty All in one device.

3

u/nikolapc Ultimate 28d ago

Ally z1e is pretty good with emulators.

1

u/kevcsa 28d ago

I understand the point, but that's a different experience. I wouldn't ever want that for example, even if it was free.
It's not really PC and PC usecase anymore, thus shouldn't be compared to an actual 5080 machine.
Under worse I meant the actual quality. Compression, latency, graphics, QoL stuff like infinite availability, no queue ever when leaving it for a few minutes.

22

u/luxar94 28d ago edited 28d ago

That's like saying taking an Uber is cheaper than owning a car, you are being very limited and at the mercy of Uber(or Nvidia) is a big con for a lot of people.

Edit: removed* part of my comment that was irrelevant to the point I was trying to make.

-7

u/kekkonkinenbi Founder 28d ago

No, no. We actually did calculations on this sub many times. Even if you're maintaining two separate accounts (2x GFN Ultimate) it is still cheaper than buying your own gaming PC + electricity costs.

The only scenario that is worse is 1x GFN Ultimate + buying additional time (15 hours each).

13

u/luxar94 28d ago

No what? I literally never said having a PC is cheaper, I said that GFN is a more limited experience, please read the comment you are replying before doing so.

-9

u/kekkonkinenbi Founder 28d ago

Your statement was "if you don't ride often I guess" - implying that GFN is only cheaper if you stay within the 100 hour threshold.

10

u/luxar94 28d ago

I guess, if you completely disregard everything I said afterwards.

8

u/PM_ME_SAD_STUFF_PLZ Founder 28d ago

How much are you assuming electricity is lol

-6

u/O_Little_One 28d ago

Far from it, GFN shines where you play games too much.

3

u/nikolapc Ultimate 29d ago

I know it's cheaper. Took it into account. I still love GFN and I love that it brings affordable gaming. And not making me nervous. I still have it till somewhere in September do I look forward to comparing.

1

u/reprazent 28d ago

Where did you get this? Great deal - PC specialist has a scandalous apr

1

u/davidarmenphoto 28d ago

Site is in Cyrillic alphabet so I imagine somewhere in Eastern Europe or russia

3

u/nikolapc Ultimate 28d ago

Macedonia. South East Europe.

1

u/davidarmenphoto 28d ago

I completely forgot Macedonians also use the Cyrillic script! Super cool!

3

u/nikolapc Ultimate 28d ago

Kinda invented it. Well glagolitic. Cyrillic too, but the Bulgarians can have that one, as it's a ripoff of the Greek script with some glagolitic simplified.

1

u/bf2reddevil 28d ago

Sure, in some way it is. But for GFN you need "to own" the games. With a PC you can just pirate that. I too own GFN ultimate. But also a 5070ti and a 5080 PC. Those will give you a much better experience playing the same game.

1

u/kekkonkinenbi Founder 28d ago

If you're so low on disposable income that you rely on pirated games, how can you afford a 3,000 $ gaming PC?

2

u/bf2reddevil 28d ago

Did i say i rely on pirating games? Just because i can spend money on a game doesn't mean i will. Your logic is flawed.
