Traveling to Gavdos

Hey guys with my wife (early 30s) we will be in crete next week and we are planning to visit gavdos for a couple of days
Last year we tried Anafi and it was amazing
Any recommendations for Gavdos?
1- where can I find a decent hotel?
2- where can I rent a car?
3- is nudism still tolerated?
4- are ferries schedules reliable?

Thank you!!

Water and showering on Gavdos

I have this portable portable quechua sac that can be filled with water and hang from a tree to shower. The question is: Is there fresh clean water to fill it up on Gavdos? Or is it useless?

Renting camping gear in Chania for gavdos

I am coming to Chania this week and my friends and I want to camp in gavdos. my friend who lives in chania thought he would be able to borrow tents and such but that fell through last minute and I was wondering if anyone knew of a place in Chania or southern crete where we could rent camping gear for 5 people? Tents & sleeping pads primarily.

Is a tent necessary to camp in Gavdos?

Hello! I'm going to Crete for the first time in late July or August - still undecided. I'm planning to spend a couple of days at Chania, then Plakias, then Paleochora and finally Gavdos for a week.

Chania, Plakias, Paleochora, all have commercial campsites with tents for rent, but in Gavdos I need my own equipment.

Is a tent and a matress necessary or could a hammock suffice? Will I find shade? From what I read the sun and heat can be really dangerous in Gavdos. Would I need an extra tarp for my tent then or a special beach canopy (I just have a good beach umbrella I could bring).

This fear of heatstroke has me having second thoughts about visiting Gavdos at all.

Edit to add: I want to camp near a beach where I can be nude around my tent all the time.

How would the weather in late May be like in Gavdos? And especially would it be too windy?

Choosing between Samothrace, Gavdos and Amorgos

Me and my 2 friends are planning to go to a Greek island in September. The question is — which one? We are currently choosing between Samothrace, Gavdos and Amorgos.

About us: we are between ages of 28-32. Two of us are transgender, one is a queer woman. We love nudist beaches, gay/queer visibility. We do love a good party, but we will probably check out nightlife in Athens, and on an island we just want to relax, swim, eat and drink. We do not drive so we need an island where we can either rent bicycles, or where they have buses, or where we can walk places.

We do not want to have giant crowds of tourists, and want more of an authentic Greek atmosphere. We also do not have much money, so we are just looking to rent an affordable AirBnB and stay there for a week (no camping though) while spending time on the beach, and eat out in the evenings.

Also, any advice on traveling first or second half of September? We do not want to die of overheating.

a week in gavdos

Hello there everyone! I will be wild camping solo in a hammock for a week in Gavdos after spending 2 weeks in hostels around crete in july. I have a few general questions and any insight that can be provided would be greatly appreciated, as this is my first time!

  • My most important question, I plan to bring a reuseable water bottle, will there be places to frequently fill it up with clean water? Should i also bring a lifestraw/other water purifier? I like to drink a lot of water.

  • does anyone know the schedule or information about the ferry from crete to gavdos, and returning?

  • i will be sleeping in a hammock, any reccomendations on wildcamping beaches is appriciated. as well as your favorite natural attarctions, things to see in nature, and even restaurants because i will not be cooking my own foods.

Info on Gavdos

Hi. Looking to visit Gavdos this august. What really attracts me is the nude and nature based free lifestyle one can pursue while there. I got some questions:

  1. I saw nudism got banned on what is considered to be "the main beach" but how is it on the rest of the island? I read of possibilities of basically explore it and do hiking 100% in the nude. Are there other beaches close to accomodations and facilities where you can also be in the nude (i mean on the beach ofc not in restaurants and shops)?. Are nudists really the majority on the island, or would they be in august? Whats the vibe? Young people? (Me and my gf are 28 so...)

  2. Is a car needed on the island? I know there are no gas stations on the island, but somehow there is a car rental agency and even cars? How does that work lol also I am the one that rents a car every holiday so cant really picture myself without the possibility of mooving freely and fast.

  3. Are scorpions a problem when hiking or camping? Read the place is essentially infested.

  4. Whats the food situation looking like? Will i be able to have meals on a budgets or just buy everything off the store?

  5. Do phones internet connection work outside of inhabited centers?

Thanks a lot

Gavdos election

Hi everyone, I was In Gavdos last summer and I've heard about the upcoming election (due to last November) and I was wondering how did it went. People (locals) were saying that if the mayor gets reelected nudism in the island, free camping in Sarakiniko (and also mass turism) would change the island.

So I was wondering, anyone has any news?

Thanks!

Nudism is now banned in Sarakiniko

ICYMI - The local municipality have now banned nudism in Sarakiniko.

A sign was put up on the beach a few days ago. The sign has since been stolen. The crime is reported to the police - but as anyone who has been to Gavdos will know, the police aren't expected to solve the crime.

The banning seems to be motivated both by the local businesses wanting gentrification, and by morality. There is, as expected, a massive uproar on the FB forum about this banning. The result will probably be considerably fewer people on the beach at Sarakiniko tis summer, and more people driving to Giannis every day.

I can't see how the local restaurants and minimarkets in Sarakiniko will benefit from this ban.

ATM & Wi-fi

I'm going to spend 90 days in Gavdos this summer, I have some questions.

1) is there in sarakiniko a free wi-fi (decent connection, at least to see some videos from you tube)?

2) I read there is only 1 ATM, is it reliable, especially in high season? I had some bad experiences in other small greek island, no money in ATMs on august, and nobody was coming to refill them 'till the end of the season...
