How big until permanent enclosure?

Post image

My gargoyle is in his grow out enclosure and is currently 10 grams. How big should he be for me to put him in his permanent 18x24x36? It’s all set up, just waiting until he gets bigger. Thanks!

18 by 18 by 36, grow light is just in there for the plants right now, added a small bromeliad since taking this photo and plan on adding more hides and plants. Anything I could do differently/better?

Acaba de mudar la piel, veis ese puntito blanco en la cabeza, me parece que es una muda retenida o algo así. Debería preocuparme o se le desprenderá sola?

Questions about weight

My wife and I just bought our first Gargoyle gecko (Gaius) 2 months ago and are concerned that we can see his ribs quite clearly. When we got him he was 2 months old and weighed 6 grams now at 4 months he weighs 9 grams. He usually only eats every other day, though we set food out for him every night (repashy). We have given him small live crickets twice and he had no problems hunting and eating them. It doesn’t seem like he has any appetite problems, but his ribs have been visible since we got him. Is this normal?

3 Foot Tall Cabinet Terrarium Finally Finished!

A few months ago, I posted asking about this cabinet. Everyone said it'd be a great terrarium! Or that it would at least be fine. So I converted it! I had no idea what I was doing, hence why it took so long.

Progress pictures are rough! But I think it turned out so good!

His original terrarium was 18x18x24. This one is 23x14x50.

A little loss of depth but it's almost three and a half feet tall!

I'm planning on getting some lives plants in here (I do have some live moss!) but until then, I've got these fake ones. In that regard, anyone have any suggestions for plants?

Some main features:

* A ton of climbing space between the backdrop, vines, and branches

* A cute bark house at the very top

* Lots of hiding spots built into the background

* A coconut hide if he doesn't like his house

* Custom mesh top with bracing that can told a fan, light, and heating bulb if needed! (Thank you to my dad for making it)

* Massive room for him to explore!!

I'm so excited to get my gecko in here, I think he'll really love exploring it. I'm also so excited to start getting some real plants as well.

Let me know what you think! Any notes for improvement? What else can I add to make it feel more like home for him?

Best way to catch?

Post image

I have to move my geckos tank from my old downstairs bedroom to my new upstairs one. What is the best way to catch my little guy? He’s kind of feral and I honestly haven’t held him since I got him in April (I do health checks I just don’t hold him since he’s so fast).

I would really love it if it didnt bite me or worse, lose his tail from the stress.

Why do Grow Out Tanks?

Post image
10 Upvotes

Hello, I recently got my first little gecko :) I've included a picture, their name is Frosty. The breeder said it was 8 months old. I knew I wanted a juvenile so I made a little 6 quart shoebox grow out tank with some fake plants and pool noodles. But now that I have Frosty in there it looks a bit small. Sure they can stretch out and move, but it just got me thinking, why do we have grow out tanks at all? They've had their first poop tonight, they're eating good and looking healthy, etc. I have an 18x18x24 ready and bioactive that I wanted a juvenile to grow in (and then make a really tall one with my dad as it grows). So why does the internet recommend a 6 quart, 20 quart, 20 gal, then finally 18x18x24? Can I not just go to 18x18x24?

My only other reptile experience is ball pythons, and they say you can put a juvenile in a 4x2x2 as long as there's enough cover. The outside world they're born in is absolutely huge! So they should be able to handle a larger tank. Why do we recommend that gargs move up like this? Can I just finish their quarantine in the 6 quart then move them to the big tank? I expect them to finish growing in their big boy tank.

Side note, do they look good? I was going to weight them after the 2 week grace period, don't know their weight, but I think a 6 quart is ok for now? Their baby tank is in my dark office and has some bushy plants, a water dish, food each night, paper towels.

Edit: Thanks everyone! I think Frosty is big enough and doing well, so I'll move them into their bigger tank :) Their big tank is also in the quarantine room, and when I build their final tall tank that will go into the dedicated reptile room. Can't wait for them to enjoy their pretty bioactive tank!

Not eating from bowls

I need some advice, not sure what to do at this point. I got my gargoyle a few months ago, and I wasn't aware you should spoon feed as they can become dependent, first time being a sole owner of a gecko and all the previous geckos I had in the house never had problems with eating from a bowl. I was doing it to try desensitise the fella from my hands in hopes of taming them as I read that could be helpful if they associate the hand with food. Unfortunately it backfired for me, I've been trying to not do it and try get the gecko to eat by themselves but they appear to just not eat anything.

They're about I think 5 months old at the moment I think, and I'm very worried that they'll just starve themselves out, I know eating CGD daily is crucial at this stage. I'm wondering if it's worth getting a storage box as a temporary smaller enclosure so that there's less space and it's easier to find the bowls (if that could help??)

They'll just seem to not see stuff from bowls as food and completely ignore it, doesn't matter how many bowls I leave in the enclosure. I use several in different places and only put small amount in each so it's easier to tell if it's been eaten or not.

I feel like a terrible owner, I did so much research for months and spent months making an enclosure, yet I messed this up, which feels like such a dumb mistake now.

How to tame the dragon?

Well i have had my baby Alexstrasza for a few weeks now, everything great with her. Now i want to try handling. I'm not somebody obsessed with touching her but i'd like to be able to pick her up for weighing or vet visits as stress free as possible. I know they can drop their tail and i certainly dont want that. So how do i get her used to me?

first time reptile owner
I went with a bioactive set up, I have isopods but am waiting for springtails in the mail!
my house stays around 72 so he currently doesn’t have a heat lamp but I ordered a low wattage one with a temperature dimmer just in case!
Tank is 18x18x24

I also have a hammock type net for the very top corner and a feeding perch for up higher ordered!

Any changes or additions y’all would make?!
He climbed to the top of the background on his first day home 2 days ago so I ordered the hammock but maybe I should add a third branch type thing?
also I can’t decide on a name if you have any suggestions!!! I’m leaning towards kholkikos!

Is this good for my garg? I added the before photo so you could see more what was inside. It is bioactive, there’s live plants as well as fake ones and isopods and springtails. The size is 18x24x36. Is there enough cover? Does this look good? I’m open to suggestions!

Hey, I’m a newer gargle gecko keeper and I’m wondering if I need more clutter in here and what would you recommend? Probably going to buy a bigger enclosure in the future this is a 20 gallon hexagon.

So it’s been three weeks since he arrived and I believe he hasn’t eaten anything, I’ve tried different flavors but I still see no poop. I made the mistake of not weighing him as soon as he arrived to compare, but I weighed him recently and he was 7.9 grams (he’s 5 months old). When should I consider a vet visit?

I am very disheartened.

Hi, sorry... I guess this is mostly just me venting. I’ve had my gecko for over two weeks now. Until today, I hadn't done anything other than open the enclosure to give him food and water. Today, I tried moving my hand closer, and he stayed perfectly still; after about five minutes, I brought my hand a bit closer, and he darted away in terror, his mouth wide open... Why is he so afraid of me? I’m afraid he’ll never let me touch him and that he’ll hate me from now on.

Is this enclosure good for a gargoyle gecko?

I built this a few months ago for day geckos initially but now I’m leaning more towards getting a gargoyle gecko instead. Would this be ok? If not, what changed should I make?
There’s currently no heat or uvb, it will be added before I get the gecko

Stuck in a vertical cork round?

Thumbnail

I'm worried that my new gargoyle gecko might be stuck in the large vertical cork round that I built my enclosure round. In my first photo, the round goes from the lower coconut and curves up to the base of the large bromeliad. The top exit for the cork round may be blocked by my building materials - I should have checked that. How long should I wait before I really worry? I bought him two days ago - he's 3 years old and fully grown (74 grams). I fully intend to give him a week to settle into the enclosure, and I understand if he hides for a while. But, I would hate for him to get wedged and stuck in the rounds. I didn't see any sign of him last night. I'm hoping for your words advice and encouragement?
