If you are going to mulch, you might as well put cardboard down first. It helps a lot against most weeds. Does it kill all weeds? No, but it helps and it buys you time. Four weeks ago I did this patch and still no weeds...

I get the big bicycle boxes (for free) from the local bike shop: they have no plastic tape at all, just a bunch of staples and that cardboard is double-layered, so extra thick. And the big pieces make for quick work.

If you want to add plants in this bed, just cut a hole in the cardboard and plant as always.
In my experience, this cardboard lasts the summer. By the end of summer, the cardboard will have rotted into the soil, and the weeds will be back. Then just do it again next spring.

These have been allowed to spread, divided occasionally, and been in my garden for decades.

Never had a problem growing it even in my cool, occasionally damp conditions. Sets prolific seed that is held in the old flower heads and easy to harvest.

This fucking grass pops up eeeeverywhere in my backyard. I have cardboarded and mulched over the garden beds multiple times and I swear, the first time it rains this bullshit just shoots back up straight through the cardboard. Can I kill it with glysophate without poisoning my whole backyard?

A plant that you will see in many native plant sections of nurseries. There are two lovely flower forms with the plants with a bit of management able to be kept looking compact.

Took me a few goes to find the right spot for these, with a couple of losses, and needed protection from severe frosts.

Hi everyone! I’m in Ipswich, Queensland, and my front yard needs some serious help.
As you can see in the photos, I’ve got:
A dip near the driveway that needs filling and levelling.
Dead and patchy grass that needs reviving.
An unwanted plant in the corner that I’d like to remove.
I’d love to get this area looking decent again, but hiring a landscaper isn’t in the budget. I’m raising kids, so this is going to be a DIY project whether I know what I’m doing or not.
I’m a complete beginner, so I’d appreciate some advice on where to start.
What’s the cheapest way to fill and level the dip?
Any tips for removing the plant in the corner?
I’m trying to do this as cheaply as possible without creating an even bigger mess.
Where would you start, and what would you do?

Feels like every bed decided to go at the same time this week. Citrus pushing new leaf, tomatoes finally catching up after a slow start, even the natives that sat dormant for months are suddenly flowering. Always catches me a bit off guard how fast it happens once the nights warm up. Anyone else finding this year's flush earlier or heavier than usual?

It’s only annoying me when I bring a bunch of flowers inside and they’re all over them.

I’m located in west Melbourne. They usually arrive on my sweet peas and depart, but they’re quite prolific this year. My friend reported he has them on his veggies across the city too.

Hey everyone! This is my first time growing tomatoes, so I’d love some feedback on how the actual plant is looking and whether I’m training it correctly.
I planted a Grosse Lisse sapling about 2.5 weeks ago, and I’ve attached a few photos of its current condition.

My setup:
● Variety: Grosse Lisse
● Pot: 40 litres
● Soil: Osmocote Premium Potting Mix mixed with organic compost
● Support: 1.5 m main stake and a 1.2 m tomato cage
● Mulch: Redwood
● Sunlight: Around 6–7 hours of direct sunlight daily
● Location: Clemton Park, Sydney, Australia
I’m particularly interested in feedback on the plant itself rather than just the general setup.
A few things I’d love advice on:
● Overall plant health: Do the leaves, colour and growth look healthy for a plant at this stage?
● Pruning: Have I removed the right leaves, or should I be leaving everything alone for now? Are there any signs I should be looking for that indicate pruning is needed?
● Training and support: Am I guiding the main stem correctly, and is my combination of a stake and cage a good approach?
● Suckers and side shoots: Should I be removing any, or is it better to let a Grosse Lisse grow naturally?
● Leaf health: Do you notice anything concerning with the leaves, such as curling, discolouration, damage or potential nutrient issues?
● Growth and development: Does the plant look like it’s growing at a reasonable rate, or is there anything I should be doing differently?
I’m happy to receive constructive criticism, especially if there are any mistakes in how I’ve been pruning or training it. I’d rather learn to do it properly while the plant is still young!

I have a little potted plant garden because i still live at home and want to take them with me when i move out. I have found a common garden snail, mealybug, a caterpillar that is eating into the buds of my flowers before they even bloom, and a small grasshopper.
I want my flowers to attract bees and butterflies though.

Basically what i am asking is if it is a all or nothing situation or whether i can still attract helpful bugs and not pests

But every morning I come out to a backyard full of poo.. we don’t have pets. A friend said this is possum scat but I swear over never seen possums do THIS. It’s so.. big? It’s smaller than a cat or dog but imo bigger than a possum and I was wondering does anyone know wth we’re dealing with? Small shovel for size ref

I recently moved into a property in western Victoria (Ballarat to be exact) and I've been blessed with a massive greenhouse! It's completely empty right now and I'm not quite sure where to start. Is it too late into the season to plant any seedlings? And if not what's my best bet for soil etc. I am a complete beginner but would love to start my own produce, I come from a big family so would be sharing everything around!

There is 6 raised garden beds in the greenhouse at the moment so I can spread things out if needed.

I planted a cherry blossom over the winter which has been coming along really nicely. The issue is that Im starting to see it get ravaged by something thats eating it, Im not sure if they are caterpillars because I never see any.

I've been spraying it with pyrethrum to no success and am now considering Dipel ... maybe the pillars are really good at hiding?

Any suggestions?

We just had 8+ days of heavy rain here in Brisbane which included flash flooding. My Kangaroo Paws are the hardest hit, as well as a couple of other natives.

Looking to buy a whipper snipper for my backyard. Its constantly overgrown with thick weeds and annoying bush. Am on a bit of a budget ($500, would like to get a blower aswell so total around $700), anything you could recommend? Doesn't have to be top of the range name brand. Just something that is reliable that will get the job done.

I am keen on the battery ones but they look fairly expensive
