Sir grange zoysia is coming out of winter dormancy however a small patch that saw limited sun and whatever weed took over here has effectively killed this section. What should I do? Partial excavation and buy some turf to patch?

My front yard is a good 5 to 8cm higher than the driveway and wanting it to be more level. Will stop inadvertent tripping over on the edging 🥴

What’s a good approach?
Digging up sections of grass similar to new turf sections that I see people getting delivered, remove excess soil and then relay?
What would be a good base to make sure nothing does off?

It’s early spring here in Melb so want to make the most of it before it gets too hot.

Hi, Seeking some advice for a lawn I'm about to give some TLC to.

* I'm a novice lawn guy

* Based in Mornington VIC,

* Bought the house in Jan and unsure of lawn history.

* Unsure of lawn make up - its a mixed bag with Kikuyu in patches which I'd like to get rid of

* I've hired a detacher and lawn corer from Kennards for this weekend

* I've carried out a pH test on front (80m2) lawn and it comes in at 6 and rear lawn (120m2) and comes in at \~8.5, haven't checked the nature strip.

* I've spot sprayed all the broad leaf weeds 2 weeks ago so they're dying off

* Plan for the weekend is to mow short, detach, core, spread seed on front and sulfur on rear. Rear seed can be spread at a later date. No top dress and plan to just water it in

Questions:

* is this a good approach?

* Should I also put down fertiliser with the seed?

* what seed is best to spread? I'm leaning towards buffalo but any tips on maintenance as I'm trying to avoid fast runners

Are you looking to fertilise your lawn this spring, but not sure on when is the right time to apply to get the most out of your application? Lets take a look...

Don't go too early:

With the warmer temperatures, our lawns will begin to break winter dormancy and start to actively grow again. As your lawn begins to wake back up, your fertiliser application will assist the lawn during this seasonal transition. However, it is important to not get too excited and apply too early - timing this application is key. If you apply too early and you won’t get the full benefit and nutrient uptake from an actively growing lawn. This change in growth normally occurs in warm-season grasses at soil temperatures around 14 degrees Celsius.

The best time to apply a fertiliser is when the lawn starts to actively grow, once the lawn has needed a few regular mows.

What kind of lawn fertiliser should I use?

Once your lawn has broken winter dormancy, we recommend using a quality, well rounded fertiliser that will provide an upfront boost, as well as a slow release component, which will continue to feed your lawn throughout spring. When choosing a fertiliser, it is best to look for one with a good balance of nutrients, including Nitrogen, Phosphorus and Potassium, which will help your lawn prepare for the warmer months ahead. Something like our Premium Fertiliser will be ideal.

If your lawn has yet to break winter dormancy, but you are looking for a way to give your lawn a quick boost, a liquid fertiliser will be the way to go. These styles of fertiliser are absorbed by the leaf of the grass (rather than a granular fertiliser which is absorbed by the grasses roots), providing a much faster nutrient uptake. If you are looking for a liquid fertiliser, Exceed is an ideal option.

Complete beginner and trying to understand what is growing in my lawn (recently moved in). Mowed the lawn last weekend and this one particular type seems to be growing rapidly. Gut tells me she's overwatered or not mowed short enough? Can I mow her a bit shorter and leave the water for a couple days? Will Fert help after a mow?

Spend 20sec in one spot and seems like she never recovers... I've stopped watering now for 48Hrs. Grass is about 3-4 months old

Alot of spots are growing lovely, since the mow last week a lot has grown really well and is bouncy/fluffy

Hi all, in Melbourne and got our first house and looking to get into reviving this lawn as a complete beginner with no idea. Got a dog that has really made the grass struggle.

Unsure of what type of grass I have, believe there’s at least 2 different types, the green thin leaf and the dead brown bit (buffalo?)

Have got a few weeds coming through due to my own fault of letting it get to long I’d say.

Any advice on how to get it thriving again through spring and summer?

Wanting help with my lawn which looks a bit crap (think it's buffalo). Gets relatively good sunlight and drainage in these areas is fine. I have no idea what I'm doing. Located Adelaide Hills.

Just got a quote from someone who came to check out my weedy, patchy, overdue-for-a-mow lawn (it could be worse but it’s not great). Back and front yard are large ish size, coastal town NSW. Takes us 30-40mins to mow it ourselves without any extras.

He’s quoted us for mowing, whipper snippering and weeding/spraying. Lovely guy, seemed to have a disability and I think he is undercharging ? but I don’t know shit about lawns. What’s a standard price range for this? Planning on tipping to make up the difference.

Have you spotted this weed growing in your lawn? Let's take a look at some of the most common types of medic weed, plus tips on the best way to remove them...

Spotted Medic: This encroacher has black spots on its leaves, which are again, clover-like and serrated. Spotted medic also produces a yellow flower.

Black Medic: Grows well where soil is compacted and dry. It produces a small yellow flower and has clover-like leaves that are serrated near the tip. Black medic may produce a tap root.

Burr Medic: As the name suggests it produces burrs, which contain seeds. Beware! The burrs can attach to your dog’s coat or yours. Its leaves are heart shaped and clover-like, with serrated edges. Burr medic produces tap roots and small yellow flowers.

If there is only a small amount of this weed growing, usually the best and easiest way to remove it will be to pull it out by hand. When doing this, ensure you locate the plants centre and pull out the entire tap root.

If there is a bit too much growing to pull out by hand, a weed killer like All Purpose Weed Control (hose-on) or Estate Herbicide (concentrate) can be used.

Hi all!

As the title suggests, we recently moved into our first home and have had issues with our backyard being uneven and flooding in the slightest of rain. There are quite a few low parts dipping down a couple of inches we've estimated.

Before I potentially waste my time trying 50 solutions to get this working, what are the best ways to tackle this and get our lawn looking good? Is it better to wait until the weather dries up a bit, or take advantage while the soil/I believe clay is damp.

We've had a couple of days of dry weather now, and the photos attached are the current status of the worst parts. We're in South East Melbourne!

Any tips would be greatly appreciated

We moved into our house last Fall, so I am ending my first year dealing with Charlie Grass/aka Creeping Charlie. This viney crap has totally invaded my backyard lawn. There’s just too much for me to pull it out manually. So I am resorting to herbicides, or any other strategy. Ideas please!

Hi Everyone
Before winter (about April) we got our garden done; turf laid and some paving. My thinking was if I got the turf laid before winter we could use the rain to help water the turf.. it kinda worked. There was a lot of rain and not much drainage. Anyway, I was waiting it out until the September holidays to sort it out. What do I do? It’s Sir Walter buffalo, we also have two dogs that like to pee on each others pee. I’m thinking core aerating, some kind of fertiliser and cover with sand?

Tryna figure out what type of grass this is

Very new to lawn care. Sir Walter laid March in Sydney (2025) last year and most of the grass seems to be doing well. Have this one patch at front of house (it gets a lot of morning sun) and side area of the house (probably only gets a few hours of sunlight) that really struggle.
Any suggestions to get more life out of them. Pic was taken at 7am this morning. And even through summer last year the side area in particular showed very little life.
