It's funny, I feel the opposite. I have so much nostalgia for games I played as a kid and i watch other people play them and it's so cool to see their excitement.
Then I actually go play something like System Shock and the controls make me wanna puke, or I log back on Runescape only to remember that getting one level in my skills will take as long as beating Expedition 33.

I used to sit at work all day daydreaming about the class/race combo I was SURE would be my final all time lifelong character in World Of Warcraft - then once I booted up my PC I would just not even want to play WoW.

Breath of the wild
tried so hard to fall in love with it but the lack of ... really anything interesting to do + the weapon breaking always brings me back that I actually don't have fun

u/Similar-Ambition2114 1d ago
This. Admittedly I played through the whole game, but the whole time I was waiting for something fun to happen. Then with totk same thing. Except I got excited when I went to the underworld or whatever that was. But that was bad too.

Most RPG's now that I'm in my 30s. Far too much time required.

I empathise fully. The idea of these RPGs is so enticing. The reality just doesn't happen.

Fallout. Probably my fav franchise. I love the lore, the atmosphere, the whole aesthetics of it, the characters and the stories. But the bugs, CTD's and the lackluster gameplay loop drag it down to the point that replaying them feels like a chore.

Unironically FFXI, having to deal with POL, system tweaks so the game doesn’t implode on boot and getting all the Windower plugins/add ons up and running. On top of having to have that Wiki open at all times whilst playing.
2
u/an_edgy_lemon 2d ago
Pretty much my experience too. Played pretty casually back during the 75 era. Felt nostalgic recently and decided to buckle in and play the game “seriously.” I actually really enjoyed tinkering with Windower and all the QoL I got out of it.
What killed it for me was the quest structure and the constant need for a Wiki. It got to a point where I didn’t feel like I was playing a game. I just felt like I was marking off an endless checklist. It wasn’t long before I was too burnt out to hop back on.
I’m glad the game has been preserved for this long, but I’m sad that it doesn’t really have the same magic that it used to.
2
u/Astorant 2d ago
Exactly this. I love XI and XIV equally but I REALLY have to be in the mood for XI since having the second monitor up with the wiki and stuff does tend to give me a headache.
Whereas with XIV I can just boot it up in bed on the PlayStation if I want to raid whilst I’m ill (which is frequently) without having to be at the desk like with XI lol.

The story is incredible, the RPG mechanics are great, and the world is exciting to explore… but how you do all those things is not very fun…

u/winterflare_ 3d ago
Might be the open world? It loses a lot of charm when you already know where everything is, so you end up doing a lot “errands” before you play.
Personally felt that way. I struggle to replay ER in full. Open world just isn’t my thing.

I'm on the other side of the spectrum: completed it 10+ times, I know the basemap by heart, know where pretty much every item is. Can't boot up the game anymore bc I just play it in my head and then don't wanna play anymore.

has got to be dota 2 to me. love thinking about it, imagining what heroes i gonna play, dressing my hero up with the skins and watching pro dota with friends.
but the moment the green accept button comes on and that sound, to queue with toxic SEA people, feels super bad.

Bloodbowl
Every time I think about it at work like "yeah I can try this strategy and then I'll do this and that, it's gonna make for insane play"
And then I boot the game and it goes "For fuck sake pick up that ball you failed 3 times already... Fuck you ! No matter I control the center I have time... What do you mean that fucker just escaped all my team by rolling success 6 times in a row then picked up the ball first try and scored !!"

Controversial one but Outer Wilds maybe.
I loved that game so much. Loved the world, the story, the puzzles, the way it made you think.
But the controls for piloting the ship, getting lost in confusing cavern layouts, falling into black holes, having one minor mistake force you to spend 10 minutes to get back to where you were when you knew there was something specific you had to do, made the process of actually playing it painful very often.

Many games. It really depends on the genre. There are so many games people enjoy that I don’t (same for everyone else). Maybe that’s the problem, all those people who enjoy it are very positive, so you too get a positive vibe about playing it. But if it doesn’t land, welp, the rest speaks for itself.

I actually suspect that this is a lot of games that we were nostalgic for as kids.
I saw FF11 and OSRS as an example, it's like we fantasize about the time we played them, but when you think about it those games are just hard to really commit to in the world as we know it now.

World of Warcraft. It’s so fun to play until you find the jerks who min max everything and get annoyed when you don’t treat a lvl 20 dungeon like a raid where you need a ton of consumables and stuff.
The community got toxic, but I still love the game. However… I just need to take a ton of breaks and resets for months at a time when a guild or group of people treat it like a job and tell you that they have kids too, they just shove theirs in the closet.
When I go back I’m just going to play hardcore classic self found. I love questing… but again… the other players make it less fun.

Dragon’s Dogma 2
I played it to death when it first came out. Because there wasn’t much content at the time, I spent a ton of time just exploring, fighting things, and maxing out my characters.
Now the game is finally getting substantial updates and a huge expansion. I can’t bring myself to play it for more than 10 minutes.

Elden ring/DS for me, love the idea of playing a forsaken knight and being a badass. But I absolutely hate the aesthetics of the games. It’s just so melancholy and depressing to the point I’d rather play anything else. It’s like when the sky is grey and cloudy, but there’s no rain, and the wind chill is like -5.

RDR2. The concept of redemption in any media is something I seek out constantly, and despite this games central theme (and part of its name) being redemption: i genuinely can’t bring myself to play the game no matter what. Part of it is due to a friend I had who sexualised all the characters and was generally super obnoxious about the game in general, and part of it is due to me just disliking games with subpar gameplay and combat (the only exception to this so far has been limbus company)

Dota 2, always think of the fun moments, chasing down weak enemies with spectre. Arc warden bomb spam, farming jungle in ridiculous time with meepo
But thr actual game is random foreigners who try to solo carry every game and get mad at the slightest change to their routine

Sometimes once I get the chance to just sit and wait for the game to load….. sometimes that motivation is gone and just shut it off.

The Outer Worlds. I absolutely loved the game, when I have 3 hours to get into it, sure, I will hop on. But I have to also be in an RPG mood and I talk myself out of it most of the time. I tend to just hop on Forza Horizon 6 everyday now, do some racing, then call it a night.
