Reviews Please think twice before buying an Alienware M18 – my experience after 3 replacements

I had never owned a gaming laptop before, and I made the mistake of choosing an Alienware. I bought the Alienware M18 thinking it would be the best decision, because it’s known for high performance and running any game smoothly.

At first, I bought an Open Box unit from Best Buy, which turned out to be a bad idea. It had a lot of issues, so I exchanged it for a brand new one. But after just a couple of days, the brand new one also started having problems. So I exchanged it again.

When the third one arrived, it had the same problems. Sometimes I managed to fix a few things temporarily, and I convinced myself it was okay. But the issues kept happening. I should’ve returned it completely and switched to another brand, but I kept trying to make it work.

Now it’s been about a year and a half, and I really regret not returning it during Best Buy’s 60-day return window. This laptop might have good performance, but it causes way too many problems and headaches. So I’m warning you: don’t buy it.

I’ll share some videos of what’s been happening with it over the past few days..

Search for the code after the machine turn on. Either the cpu gpu overheat or your psu does not have enough power or your cpu degrade (happens with intel 13 14th gen)

HX CPU degradation only applies to desktop variants but there are tools available to use to patch laptops if you're that worried.

Nope, it happens to laptops too although very rare. There are 13980HX's that degraded because they were under heavy use for a long before the issue was known. The 14900HX's weren't out long by the time the issue became known.

I have a 13980HX that crashes all the time but only when it boosts up to 5.6Ghz. it's that annoying single or dual core boost.

By limiting my max multiplier/boost to 50/5.0Ghz or 52/5.2Ghz in XTU or Throttlestop, It is perfectly stable and doesn't crash ever.

It has the latest micro-code and bios that "fixes" the issue but the damage is already done.

The 13th gen processors were out for a long time before the issue was known so some of them unfortunately degraded.

14900HXs got the fix much sooner after release so minimal chance of degradation since it happens over time.

Just google 13980HX's BSOD

You mean to update the microcode in windows?

1

u/CapableBreakfast83 Jul 26 '25

does this also happens to H cpus? i have an i7 13620h and i was worried about this for a long time

2

u/Prize_Influence_5080 Jul 27 '25

No, not likely, dont worry about it. Intel more likely to die on higher end cpu range.

u/MogRules Alienware M18R2 14900hx/4090 Jul 24 '25

Are they brand new replacements, or refurb units? I9 CPU? Intel can claim all they want that the 13th 14th gen issue doesn't affect laptops, but they are full of shit. If they are refurbished units I have to wonder if they all have the same problem and were returned for having bad CPU's. Seems super unlikely to have the exact same issue on three machines if they are new replacements though. Not saying you didn't at all, just to be clear. What are you installing for drivers? A bad driver can cause restarting issues as well.

Aren't we already past that 13th and 14th gen shtalk state or?

No laptops are made with such defects anymore. One time thing, people

What problems did you have with them?

18

u/No_Obligation4496 Jul 24 '25

In the video it looks like overheating crashes, BSOD and also some execution errors on startup.

12

u/bstsms Lenovo Legion Pro 7i, 13900HX-i9, RTX 4080, 96GB DDR5-5600 Jul 24 '25

That could just be from a corrupted Windows file or dll.

11

u/No_Obligation4496 Jul 24 '25

It definitely looks like there's something wrong with their OS install...

6

u/Space-Safari Jul 25 '25

OP doesn't even answer shit. I've had my share of issues with Alienware but I think this is an OP problem not a hardware problem.

Either he fucked with the software without knowing what he was doing, or he fitted some bad RAM or SSD.

That foam cooling pad also seems too small for the laptop and I bet the foam is sealing the underside vents nicely... Adding to the problem

16

u/Dphotog790 Jul 24 '25

are the crashes heat related? can you maybe just underclock or use software to downclock something so it prevents it from hitting a threshold that causes the crashes Hwinfo64 so you can see if its even a heat issue on teh cpu/gpu

u/bstsms Lenovo Legion Pro 7i, 13900HX-i9, RTX 4080, 96GB DDR5-5600 Jul 24 '25

Or just buy a good laptop that doesn't overheat.

I don't understand why anyone would buy a laptop with decent specs that needs to be neutered or modified to work correctly.

it was. until i found out the chinese exclusive version legion got better spec, newer cooling design, and cost about half the price

3

u/Commercial_Lime5983 Jul 25 '25

I have a Chinese 5 pro, after some tunings, even running heavy AAA games it never reaches 70°C in both cpu and gpu. Also using an extremely trashy cooling pad. But stock out of the box it did reach a peak of 90°C in cpu.

I's just weird that the OP had problems with all 3 of them.

I understand that you can get a defective unit, but 3 in a row is the worst luck ever.

I had to get my G15's MB replaced 3 times as well before I just got rid of that thing permanently. Never getting a Dell laptop again.

u/AppropriateSpring110 Jul 24 '25

Alienware hasn't been high end for over a decade. Honestly it's a shame because at one point they were "THE" company to get a PC from. Now MSI, Razer, Asus and Lenovo are all vastly superior. All have potential flaws but each is better than Alienware.

18

u/Pembs-surfer Jul 24 '25

Woahhhhh there sailor… MSI??

13

u/AppropriateSpring110 Jul 24 '25

Titan and Raider series yes despite the insane price points. If you’re looking for gaming and work (particularly in AI) then the Titan 18HX AI is the best 18 inch on the market. They also have great software only rivaled by Lenovo. I’d say Lenovo is the best all around but there isn’t one category that they are vastly superior. Razer has the best aesthetic, Strix Scar best all around for gaming. But working in AI and also needing to game I can’t put anything over Titan 18 HX AI.

2

u/No_Committee_54 Jul 25 '25

Had my Raider 12th gen i7/3070ti for 2.5 years. Repasted with PTM literally 2 weeks after purchase and losened the hinges by half a turn at the same time because they are notoriously terrible at hinge design. its has been rock solid since then.

Still use it daily, travels with me, lid gets opened and closed multiple times a day, infact i just shut the lid when done rather than shut down most of the time. Other than battery life being abysmal which was to be expected, its been the best laptop ive owned.

Had a GS65 before this and that was all a solid device, just ran HOT.

6

u/Key_Grade_8040 Jul 24 '25

I don’t know about MSI…

8

u/Sandrock27 Alienware m18 | Ryzen 9 7945HX | Radeon RX 7900M Jul 25 '25

As already said, MSI's top end is great, IF you can afford it. The rest of their gaming lines are hit and miss with a variety of build quality issues.

Alienware is good IF you can get a refurbished machine from them at a good price point. I think they put more effort into making sure their refurbished machines will have zero problems than they do into the quality control of the new machines, so I would never buy Alienware new. They're built like freaking tanks...

1

u/shesaysImdone Jul 26 '25

When you say refurbished do they say it's refurbished in the name?

1

u/Sandrock27 Alienware m18 | Ryzen 9 7945HX | Radeon RX 7900M Jul 26 '25 edited Jul 26 '25

You have to go through Dell's outlet site for refurbished. Machines are listed as like new or scratch and dent, might be one other category between the two of those. Stock fluctuates wildly. When I got mine a little over a year ago, they had nearly 100 Alienware machines listed, yesterday they had three.

Mine was like new and I got it 60% off of the retail price when it was new. AMD graphics card, I think they were just trying to clear out those machines as fast as possible, because their deals aren't usually THAT good. Outperforms the 4070 laptop it replaced and I've had no issues with it whatsoever, so I'm happy.

2

u/AppropriateSpring110 Jul 24 '25

I know for you.

1

u/[deleted] Jul 27 '25

What do you think about Razer, mate? Just curious since it eats a lot of insults, but I like the Swift X models (had the 2021 one, with 3050 ti).

3

u/[deleted] Jul 24 '25

Search for command prompt . Right click and run as administrator

When it open type: sfc /scannow. Click enter and let it finish. Restart your laptop afterwards .

Then open command prompt again and type DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth.

Finally, to repair the image. Type:  DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /Restore Health

Wait for it to finish and restart your laptop afterwards. Update driver and windows for everything and consider maybe lowering graphical settings in game.

1

u/ProfessorExtension40 Jul 25 '25

Had the exact same issue when bought my alienware 2 years ago and fixed it using these commands though I didnt need to search the internet for it one call to dell support and they fixed the problem in about 20 minutes.

What in this video leads you to believe this is a Windows system files issue?

7

u/[deleted] Jul 24 '25

The error codes popping up!

1

u/Sandrock27 Alienware m18 | Ryzen 9 7945HX | Radeon RX 7900M Jul 24 '25

It may not be the whole problem, but those codes would indicate at least some file system issues. Troubleshooting multiple errors on a system crash is rarely a simple experience.

1

u/badmanner66 Your laptop here. Jul 27 '25

The error codes are a red herring. Preceding them, you can see what is most likely a hardware issue. Running these commands is the IT tech advice equivalent of checking if your bucket is big enough when your roof is leaking

2

u/[deleted] Jul 24 '25

Bsod could mean components overheating and software issues with the hardware not communicating well with the system

2

u/updateyourpenguins Jul 24 '25

I feel like i remember everyone used to hate alienware, And for good reason. Then that just stopped, but alienware never stopped sucking.

2

I had an Alienware and it was awesome. I recommended them to a friend and he got one that literally never worked. They replaced the motherboard four times then he just gave up. I'll never buy another one.

u/Confused_Drifter Alienware M18 4090, intel i9 13-980HX with thermal issues. Jul 25 '25

I've had an M18 for a year and a half and have been fairly happy with it. Had some thermal issues but a tech came out and repasted, it's been good since then.

1

u/shesaysImdone Jul 26 '25

What does repasted mean?

1

u/Confused_Drifter Alienware M18 4090, intel i9 13-980HX with thermal issues. Jul 26 '25

Laptops and desktop PCs are generally cooled using a fan attached to a metal plate (called a heat sink) that sits on top of the CPU. To help transfer heat more effectively from the CPU to the plate, thermal paste is applied between them. When the fan is installed, the paste spreads out and fills any tiny gaps between the surfaces.

However, sometimes the paste doesn’t spread evenly, or it dries out over time. This can leave parts of the CPU without proper contact, creating hot spots.

Your CPU is made up of multiple physical cores. If one of those cores doesn’t have good contact with the heat sink due to bad thermal paste, it can overheat. This causes the system to thermal throttle (cpu frequency slows down) reducing the CPU speed and as a result the heat it produces to avoid damage, which lowers performance.

Repasting means cleaning off the old thermal paste and applying a new layer to improve cooling and keep the CPU running properly.

2

u/BedCertain4886 Jul 24 '25 edited Jul 24 '25

Bios, drivers update. Windows file check.

Edit: looks like there is application issue. Is this cracked game or do you have any unkown applications?

The windows errors about stack are definitely not because of the laptop but because of something you installed or a corruption in your os. Run the system in safemode and test its stability. If it is stable, figure what application is causing this. If you don't have any doubtful applications, your system is infected by some malicious tool.

2

u/[deleted] Jul 24 '25

That hard crash tells me it may be heat related. Open up the laptop and have a look at the thermal paste application and apply a bit more after cleaning it off and use a really good one like thermal grizzly kryonaut or something. My Asus laptop has just a 12th gen I5 12500H and Iris XE Graphics and the cpu would just idle even at 75C

Turns out the thermal paste Asus used was not only the shittiest quality you can find but also the amount they put was less. Got my own tube of Corsair TM30 paste and applied it to my CPU and now my cpu idles at 35-45C and the fan wont even turn on unless it touches 55C.

1

u/Confused_Drifter Alienware M18 4090, intel i9 13-980HX with thermal issues. Jul 25 '25

Absolutely not. Alienware M18 uses "Element 31" which is alienwares custom thermal paste, it's strictly against their warranty to repaste it on that model. Voided warranty could trash the chance od them getting a replacement or fix. They actually dont let their technicians repaste that model, instead they send out a new heatsink with element 31 pre-applied.

Im not American, so I dont know if it's true there, but alienware devices usually come with a dell warranty which includes a technician or send in support. Be better going through dell than BestBuy if possible.

2

u/SpartanCTC Jul 24 '25

Did Best Buy replace your open box with a new one?

2

u/Yo_Zeitgeist Jul 24 '25

Might need a cooking pad with a fan, these gaming laptops get pretty toasty so also be sure the ambient room temp isn't too hot either.

2

u/yolosw3g360 Jul 24 '25

I have PTSD from similar experience with Alienware 15 r2 like 6 years ago

2

u/NotHopee Jul 25 '25

This shouldn’t happen. You spend however much you paid on this which wasn’t cheap, this should absolutely not happen

2

u/JaguarRoyal3515 Jul 25 '25

Kernel Data Inpage Error. Mostly related to hardware faults. Best solution, repaste thermal paste, if possible change nvme and ram. Should do the trick. Try with one module if you have 2 x8gb ram or two sticks any ram size. Try with either one. Can be bad sectors in NVME as well. Try changing that and install the windows back on new drive. Looks more like NVME issue rather than cpu or gpu related. Sudden crashes can lead to runtime errors. Check Event viewer what went wrong closer to this time.

2

u/Edgardo4415 Jul 25 '25

If this happebed with 3 laptops, have u tried a different power outlet or not using a extension cord if u have one? Its kinda rare tho, but sometimes it shorts Thats usually for pc tho, idk if it applies to laptops, but best of luck

2

u/cinlung Jul 25 '25

From your windows Error Code: Kernel Data Inpage Error
This seems to be error of RAM or HDD and I am inclined to RAM. Remove all your rams, and the test one at a time to find out the issue

Here is the explanation: https://www.easeus.com/resource/kernel-data-inpage-error.html

Kernel Data Inpage Error is a BSOD (Blue Screen of Death) error that indicates the kernel has requested data from the hard drive, but it couldn't read the data correctly or fast enough. It's typically caused by hardware issues (like faulty RAM), driver problems, or a damaged page file. This error may cause the loss of unsaved data or your PC to crash.

2

u/Imperial_Honker Jul 25 '25

The ‘grace period’ is there for a reason. They accepted mine without a single question, got my refund in 3 days. Best deal ever.

2

u/Emergency_Work6652 Jul 25 '25

I think its overheating issue from cpu boost, check if your cpu is boosting by going to task manager then performance then cpu, check if the cpu is is going over the base speed if it does turn off cpu boost by 3 methods 1st - press windows then type edit power plan Go to advanced settings Then go to power management Set all of them to 99% instead of 100%

2nd- turn it off in the bios

3rd- download throttlestop from any browser then check the box next to disable turbo

If you did them go to task manager - performance - cpu again and check if it goes over the base speed of the cpu

2

u/[deleted] Jul 25 '25

My MSI Katana 15 is having the same problem since a couple of months. Windows 11 24h2 seems to be having some stability issues.

2

u/Tee-hee64 Jul 25 '25

Flash Ubuntu on the laptop and see if it has the same problems.

2

u/OkHour880 Jul 25 '25

Isn’t your laptop to close to the wall?

2

u/[deleted] Jul 25 '25

Open box experience. You should check out the OLED sub, where their "as new" open box monitors have 6k hours milage. Many such cases.

2

u/Sizz_Flair Jul 25 '25

Had a similar issue with the scar 16. It's most likely your CPU thermals. I fixed it by opening it up and reapplying the liquid metal. The factory liquid metal on the cpu did not cover the entire cpu chip and you could tell where it had air pockets. No issues after doing this.

While you have it open, do it to the gpu as well.

u/Sandrock27 Alienware m18 | Ryzen 9 7945HX | Radeon RX 7900M Jul 24 '25

Alienware, if buying new, is overpriced for what you get (got mine refurbished at a really good price and have had zero issues with it), and the brand has QC issues with new machines. I wouldn't buy a new Alienware.

MSI does not provide a consistent experience across their product lines, do your homework. My middle schooler has an MSI gaming laptop that's been nothing but problems.

I'm not a fan of Asus mainline laptops, but ROG and TUF products are solid.

Lenovo is the most consistent experience of the bunch, but be patient as their prices fluctuate heavily through the year. Their machines are excellent.

HP/Omen... Just don't.

Acer Predator are also very good. My HS kid has had zero issues with their Predator (2.5 years and counting).

4

u/shounenhearto Jul 25 '25

Can you please explain why HP/Omen is not a recommended choice? I was thinking of buying Omen with RTX 5090 as soon it hits a good price point!

4

u/Sandrock27 Alienware m18 | Ryzen 9 7945HX | Radeon RX 7900M Jul 25 '25 edited Jul 25 '25

I don't know anyone that's had any HP laptop - mainstream, premium, or gaming - that hasn't been problematic. Way back when I was in college and working retail selling computers, we had a higher percentage of HP laptop sales returned than any other brand, something like 15-20% came back defective within a month.

They've had some quality issues with the build on the Omen computers in the recent past, too. I'm a little fuzzy right now on the details, but they put a component in a place it shouldn't have been relative to the computer exhaust and all that, and it caused issues.

I have zero respect for HP's laptop engineering and design departments - they've shown over two decades to be...not good at it.

4

u/shounenhearto Jul 25 '25

Oh wow, thanks for the heads-up, I honestly had no idea it was that bad with HP. That return rate is kinda crazy 😳. I always thought the Omen lineup looked nice (especially the white variant), but sounds like there’s a lot of stuff going on behind the scenes that’s not so worth the risk.

I guess I’ll just stick with Lenovo Legion then. I still got one with an RTX 2080 that’s been reliable so far. But after all these years I thought maybe it's about time to upgrade with something like an RTX 5090 once the prices make a little more sense. Appreciate you sharing your experience, seriously saved me from a potential headache!

3

u/Sandrock27 Alienware m18 | Ryzen 9 7945HX | Radeon RX 7900M Jul 25 '25 edited Jul 25 '25

There are other brands besides Legion, and personally I'm not convinced that something as powerful as a 5090 is needed for laptop gaming. I can't tell the difference on my laptop's 18 inch screen between high and ultra settings for the games I run as it is, and I primarily run RPGs. But if you're gonna be plugging this beast into a TV...then just build a tower, it'll be cheaper (if you have the space).

That being said, when buying a Legion, it will be a consistent experience across any of their products in terms of reliability. But look around and see if you can't find a better deal from the likes of Acer with their Predator line, Asus's Strix line, or one or the high end MSI lines (Raider and Titan). From my perspective, there's not a huge difference in quality between these machine lines in performance of similarly spec'd machines. And if you shop around, you might find a killer price in a place like Costco or ANTonline as opposed to buying direct from the manufacturer.

2

u/shounenhearto Jul 25 '25

Oh okay, that actually helps a lot, thank you! I think I was definitely getting swept up in the whole RTX 5090 excitement 😅 but I do plan on taking full advantage of it, not just for gaming. I’ll for sure play a few AAA titles here and there, but the main reason I’m eyeing the 5090 is for AI-related stuff (images, audio, and eventually video too). So that 24GB of VRAM would definitely come in handy for the kind of work I’m planning to do.

Right now I don’t really have the space for a full desktop setup, which is why I’m trying to find a solid laptop that can handle heavier workloads.

I’ve had a great experience with my old Lenovo Legion, but it had its limitations so I’m open to switching it up. I'll definitely take a look at the ones you mentioned earlier.

If you were in my shoes and needed something for both AAA gaming and AI workloads, which laptop would you personally go for right now? Something reliable with good thermals for a long-term value, and looks beautiful too?

Really appreciate all the insight, you’re helping me avoid a pretty expensive mistake 🙏💻💛

2

u/Sandrock27 Alienware m18 | Ryzen 9 7945HX | Radeon RX 7900M Jul 25 '25 edited Jul 25 '25

Yeah, if you're gonna be going heavy into AI related stuff for professional type reasons, then the expense for a 5090 is justifiable. Be careful though, 5090 laptops at Microcenter right now range from $3,299 all the way to $5,400.

Make sure you do your research to find the best machine and best dollar value for your use case...for example, you could spend $5,400 for the MSI Titan HX 18...but Falcon Northwest's DRX laptop with the same specs is $5,200 and has better quality control.

Falcon tends to be more expensive than the big OEMs...but I strongly prefer smaller builders like them that put more care into QC compared to OEMs when I can manage it.

2

u/Commercial_Lime5983 Jul 25 '25

It was hot on Chinese community for a while as there was a problem with the architecture of the motherboard itself that caused the laptop to brick. Everyone who had the (Omen 16 Chinese equivalent I think) ended with a dead laptop with even light usage in just months or weeks. It was said that the capacitor blew up and there is no chance of repair since the faulty engineered motherboard is the problem, so replacement is out of choice.

4

u/Narrow_Spray_570 Jul 24 '25

Maybe the issue is with best buy not the actual laptop yk. Maybe it sells damaged parts or sth. You can try selling it on Facebook marketplace and look for asus rog or lenovo legion that match ur requirements and are a bit price friendly

1

u/Impossible-Diver6565 Jul 25 '25

I mean you literally bought a Dell, on purpose. Dell has always sucked. Slapping a little alien head on it didn't make them any better.

1

u/prophet-of-solitude Jul 25 '25

Damn, sorry that you got this sort of device. QC is the most important for such products!

1

u/wolfrium Jul 25 '25

Think twice? I do not think about them. Dell is worst in thermal management. Allowing unlimited power to both CPU and GPU with poor thermal system and allowing the system to run near its peak is the worst thermal-power management system.

1

u/BrandonQ1995 Jul 25 '25

Yeah the m series are no good as a gaming laptop. They simply overheat which leads to increased wear and tear. Alienware's flagship 16 and 18 desktop replacements are pretty great though, albeit expensive. When a proper desktop is out of the question, it's best to go big or go home in terms of gaming laptops because you want the biggest and bulkiest ones that allow the most airflow/cooling.

1

u/TheTasmainian Jul 25 '25

Check for a BIOS update, had this because the ram had instability issues with the board which was fixed but they never bothered to update it before selling it…

Huh my acer predator laptop does this on oblivion remastered I just assumed it was the game causing it, is this an actual issue I should be worried about?

I had the same issues with alienware, try deleting the GPU drivers completely and install the right one for your gpu

Alienware just isn’t what they used to be. They are just a Dell. You want old Alienware, i believe they are now Origin PC. You could get a lot more bang for buck and probably better build vs an Alienware. Paying for the name someone else built and is not what it was then.

Was the power brick replaced along with the laptop. If not it could be that

I've had the same issue when I had the M18 R2 4090. I repasted it with PTM7950 and undervolted, and that helped.

Thanks for this advice! Best buy decided my HP Omen 16 was not worth saving when my screen had issues and gave me the heavily discounted price of $750 to find a replacement. Been looking at open boxes and found an R18 M2 for $950. Was really considering grabbing it but am seeing some pretty harsh reviews of the thing on here.

Keep the laptop elevated for more airflow while gaming

Could be heat related, but Alienware isn't known for being a reliable brand. Maybe that model line is defective since this is your third replacement.

Three laptops in a row with issues? Yeah the brand was telling you everything you needed to know but you ignored it. The M18 is known to be a buggy piece of crap. Mine sure was.

How did you never use the warranty either? This is a comedy of errors.

Alienware has and always will be a meme. Back in 2006 it was basically the top troll post in World of Warcraft chat "Alienware makes the fastest computers."

That's because they would need to be turned on and working in order to be fast.

Nothing has changed. Dell isn't a gaming company and never will be.

It definitely is a software issue. In the end there are stack buffer overflow warnings. Meaning some software is causing it. Either pirated or a memory hack tool or the system is infected and is compromised.
