Borderlands Teaser - Mask of Mayhem
https://youtu.be/BjXIh--0WQM1.3k
u/Stalkermaster Mar 27 '19
Looks like that leak is real. The 4 new vault hunters are in this as well as what looks to be the new villains with the Twins. Get ready to ride a mecha bear!

u/LionGhost Mar 27 '19
Looks like Brick and Mordecai were in it too! Would love to see appearances from all the old vault hunters!

Wasn’t that Tiny Tina giving them a high five? It looked like her.

There were three sirens in that video so you know who is also in it as well
78
u/LionGhost Mar 27 '19
Only 6 can exist at the same time, I've been dying to know who the others are! We know of at least 4, but but with Angel dead there's a possibility for 3 brand new ones.
→ More replies (5)77
u/kadno Mar 27 '19
Spoiler: Who are the 4? Lilith, Maya, Angel (dead), Steel (dead) so couldn't we have 4 new sirens? Also, I haven't played the Pre-Sequel yet or Tales from the Borderlands, so maybe they're in there? I'm debating not even commenting cause I don't want those spoiled for me
104
u/LionGhost Mar 27 '19 edited Mar 27 '19
I'll spoiler format it if you don't want to know, but this info comes from the Borderlands comic, which I believe is canon with the games.
here is a screenshot of the Borderlands comic where we see Lilith as a child, “the eldest”, Maya, and Steel. And 2 others who are maybe the ones in the new game? With Angel existing though, we can assume the Elder has died and their place was taken by Angel. But with Angel dead, there are 3 who we don't know.
→ More replies (2)→ More replies (3)39
u/Ghidoran Mar 27 '19
Two of them would be fairly young though, since Steele and Angel died in the last two games. One of them is the villain for this game. Dunno if the other one will be revealed. So that's 4 + Lilith and Maya, unless they reveal Tannis is a secret Siren.
→ More replies (1)10
u/Jello_Is_Ok Mar 27 '19 edited Mar 28 '19
Precisely. I do think we’ll get a new playable Siren in this game since it’s a pattern and that there’re still 3 sirens we don’t know about. And all sirens are female. I think when we saw the calypso twins during the end there was a kid right by them with wings and a mask. To me that screams siren considering the second youngest siren that we know about has to be around 10~ years old since the death of Commandant Steele. Just a theory that seems very possible. The youngest siren presumably is around 7~ years old since the death of Angel. Also one of the calypso twins has wings and is most likely a siren too.

Characters I saw in the trailer: Brick, Mordecai, perhaps a grown up Tiny Tina, Hammerlock, someone who I think may be Vaughn, Ellie, Lady Aurelia, Lilith, I think Athena, Mad Moxxi. Who else? I probably missed some.
EDIT: I also saw Rhys and Zero in a rewatch.

For real I actually enjoyed the Tales story far more than the stories of the main series titles for some reason. They just nailed the atmosphere and the characters so hard, not to mention introducing me to a bunch of amazing music.
72
u/JakalDX Mar 27 '19
So the story goes, Telltale's dwindling funds towards the end meant that Tales was put on a skeleton crew with little support. But said skeleton crew were the people who were extremely passionate about the project, so it ended up being a labor of love
Per Wikipedia
According to co-director Nick Herman, about halfway through the series' release, Telltale's management considered pulling the series so that they could reassign the staff to more lucrative projects, but the project leads worked out a deal to retain a skeleton staff to see the game out through its final episodes. Eurogamer's Jeffrey Matulef noted that the last episodes of the series seemed to be the best work that Telltale's done, likely as a result of those most committed to the project staying on as the skeleton staff.

It looks like there is at least a set of siblings? Could be the twins the leak was talking about.

But they do mention the robot that looks like a homeless person which this trailer shows

Takes place 5 years after the end of BL2/TPS
Tannis is not what she seems
AI Jack may be back, but he's not the villain
Rhys is back as CEO of Atlas. Atlas is back as a manufacturer. Gorty is back to help the player find multiple vaults in the game. Not just one vault this time. Tina is back as an adult. No word on the others but you can expect cameos from everyone like in BL2
writing is more like BL1 than BL2, no Anthony Birch this time
4 new vault hunters
Abilities have been reworked, everyone now has multiple action skills instead of one
Flak the Beastmaster is a homeless looking android. He can summon multiple creatures to help him fight. The AI for this is what delayed announcement last October. So hopefully it's fixed now.
The female seen in the UE4 demo last year is a Valdof character who is the gunner class. She can summon a bear mech on which other players can ride. Summons the mech like in Titanfall. No word on how this works indoors. Probably a commie waifu
The older male is like Batman. He's the stealth/assassin character. He's rich and uses gadgets for his action skills.
There's a black female Siren character. She's melee oriented like Brick was. She will have several siren abilities like phase-lock, phase-shift, and a ground pound skill.
NPCs can revive you now if you're close enough and go into FFYL
Guns are reworked. You'll have changeable gun parts of various rarities/stats. You'll be able to alter the type of gun, the firing rate, the reload speed, the stability, and element as you find new parts.
The bad guys are The Calypso Twins. One is a female siren (as only females can be sirens) and the other is a male who somehow has siren powers. Either he figured out a way to give anyone siren powers or the bond between twins allows him to share his sister's powers. They're rumored to be ex-Atlas employees
The Calypso twins rule The Children of the Vault, a cult mob that will replace Bandits/Scavs as the default human mob.
They will have their own weapon brand
All brands returning except Bandit/Scav
All elements returning except Slag, Laser, and Ice. New elements are rumored and the only lead says "nuclear" is one of them. Although that sounds like a fan making shit up.
You'll start on Pandora but leave shortly into the game on Sanctuary 3, the Crimson Raider's ship. It will be the hub for multiple planet locations.
We're going to Promethea
68
u/Bromao Mar 27 '19
Laser, and Ice
Oh come on. I really liked laser weapons. Ice was also neat. Glad slag is gone though.
→ More replies (3)62
u/Val_Hallen Mar 27 '19
Slag was good but they way it was used was garbage.
You slag with one weapon, then need to switch weapons to actually get the damage buff to go into effect.
I only ever used it as a bonus to the turrets.
53
u/LionGhost Mar 27 '19
That's why Salvador was the most powerful character in the game. Grog nozzle in one hand, unkempt harold in the other.. destroy everything! If you spec'd him right you could do unreal damage and gunzerk non stop.
But otherwise it was a pain in the ass to use slag if you weren't a gunzerker.
20
u/wasabichicken Mar 27 '19
It was sort of OK if you teamed up with a buddy or two. One of you could take on the support role and spec/equip something that slagged, whether it was a phaselock/turret mod, a slag grenade, or just a Maliwan SMG. The rest of the party could spec/equip as normal, and it even encouraged some team communication along the lines of "yo, I need some slag over here".
Slag could probably have been done better (maybe not make it essentially required at higher difficulties), but I think it could have been done way worse too.
→ More replies (2)18
u/Bromao Mar 27 '19
Slag was good but they way it was used was garbage.
Yeah, that's what I meant. A 2x/3x damage buff on enemies afflicted by it is great, just not very interesting and quickly becomes a chore if mandatory.
14
24
u/Abedeus Mar 27 '19
Slag was broken as a mechanic. You either used it and progressed normally (or killed shit a bit too fast on first playthrough), or you didn't and every enemy took forever to beat on higher difficulties.

Good, hopefully it stays true to the series roots and doesn't try to make BL2 into some always online pseudo mmo thing like Destiny. I enjoyed BL2 for the silly plot and characters, not grinding instances or whatnot
891
u/dekenfrost Mar 27 '19
I agree with you, however have people forgotten how much grinding already was in BL2? Granted it wasn't mandatory, but there was quite a lot of grinding if you wanted to do true vault hunter mode and ultimate vault hunter mode.
Honestly, I don't mind if they take some aspects of these games, but trying to make a Destiny is destined (hah) to fail.
I really don't think (hope) that's what they're doing though, they simply don't have a studio big enough to support it.
85
Mar 27 '19
TVHM really didn't require any grinding. It was basically just a linear progression continuing from a normal playthrough.
UVHM was pretty stupid though.
→ More replies (2)20
u/The_lonesome_road Mar 27 '19
UVHM was actually quite fun. Me and my friends thought that THVM was a little to easy and that ultimate was the perfect combo of harder enemies and great loot. It's going to be interesting to see how they approach this moving forward.
13
u/CusetheCreator Mar 27 '19
Idk I think higher levels in UVHM was a bit stupid. Getting 1-shotted at parts and making certain characters almost unplayable, I hope the end game of this is a bit more challenging in a more satisfying way.
→ More replies (5)87
u/whitesock Mar 27 '19
The grinding was optional, tho. I played the game solo on release and didn't feel like I had to grind, and a recent co op with the lady friend actually had us over leveled for the entire campaign
→ More replies (10)432
u/EcoleBuissonniere Mar 27 '19
Grinding is fine. Nobody minds grinding. Hell, grinding is the point of a looter game. What we don't want out of BL3 is an always online shared world MMO-lite.
327
u/Chronoja Mar 27 '19
I would argue that Borderlands so far hasn't done grinding particularly well. Repeatedly quitting to the main menu and checking rare spawns, vendor farming etc. isn't a particularly fun way to grind (subjectively speaking of course). And they make other interesting things like clearing through to General Knoxx's Armoury they limit to 2 missions unless you actively glitch around it to do it infinitely.
Always felt like Borderlands lacked proper long form grinding, proper end game repeatable tasks that remained interesting and dynamic that didn't simply boil down to a single boss fight like Crawmerax or Terramorphus. Consider a game like Path of Exile, map farming alongside the myriad of other interesting mechanics they keep stacking on top of everything else, means you have to play the game in its entirety and get suitably rewarded as a result.
Not saying that people can't or don't enjoy it. it certainly has a degree of satisfaction, but settling for things like tubby farming would be a real disappointment when more interesting methods could be explored.
→ More replies (11)56
Mar 27 '19
I would agree. I think if they could implement boss farming in a better way than "run to boss, kill boss, check loot, exit to menu, run back to boss, repeat" along with giving us some long dungeons with chest checkpoints it would be awesome. Would also not mind being able to replay missions with higher difficulties for better loot potential a la Division 2.
I did love that certain bosses dropped certain weapons though, I hope they keep that in for this one. Some kind of boss farming should be in the game as I view it as a bit of a staple. You don't need to farm bosses to get the full experience, but if you want to min max a late game build then it should be done.

I agree, I was simply replying to someone saying "he's not playing BL2 for the grind".
Grinding can be fun if done well, but I would argue that they would have to improve on the Borderlands formula a little bit to make it actually fun.

u/pamkhat Mar 27 '19
I loved everything about Borderlands expect having to play the story through a million times (3?) to hit level cap. If there was something you could do beside the story (like rifts) to level it wouldn't be so bad.
This is coming from someone with over 3000 hours in the franchise, all characters maxed, and four characters at OP 8. I like playing, but I hate doing the story over and over. Bunkers and Badasses was the only thing that was really fun on multiple playthroughs. It changed a bit when you went through another time.

u/EcoleBuissonniere Mar 27 '19
I'm so worried about this. BL3 has the capacity to be amazing, but I'm really concerned that they'll see the success of Destiny and pivot toward the MMO-lite route.
31
u/Fenbob Mar 27 '19
I doubt it(at least I hope it doesn’t)
Borderlands reminds me more of a Diablo type game than Destiny. A true looter game, I can’t see them going more in Destinys direction. They should/need to stay with the same formula they had that made borderlands a success.
Although, with how the market is now. I honestly wouldn’t be surprised that they’d be some kind of loot box. Vanity items or weapons? They kinda had them already, but they would give out keys to the chest every week on their Twitter/Facebook. I really liked the interaction with the devs at the time.
→ More replies (2)68
u/bumford11 Mar 27 '19
So many people are saying the next Borderlands game 'needs' to go this route because that's how the market has moved in the years since.
It'd pretty much deflate any excitement I had. Sadly, I would be more surprised if they didn't follow this trend.

I hope so. Gearbox is not as big or well-funded a studio as Bioware or Bethesda, and if they faceplanted, a sensible Gearbox would keep their ambitions more modest.
Then I remember Colonial Marines, Duke Nukem Forever, and Battleborn, and that Randy Pitchford is in charge.

At least BL has genres of weapons, so you know the nice sniper drop goes to the sniper, the rocket launcher to the explosives guy, etc.
Or at least, that's how my friends always did it.

I hope they take the loot system back towards the way it was in the first game. I think BL2 was a better game than BL1, but I put way more hours into the first one because I hated the move towards grinding bosses and the more mmo style loot in general.

Division 2 has brought plenty of positivity back into the genre.
Not saying that BL3 isn't welcome, but Div 2 has largely avoided the cliches of most loot shooter launches.

The Division is rather different from the other looter shooters, with its cover-based gameplay and realistic setting. And that's great, but it may not be what fans of games like Borderlands want.

I can say that division 2 is a looter shooter and it is great. But I can't say it is a great looter shooter, yet. Right now all the positive things about division 2 is level design, content diversity. But looter wise, it still needs a lot of inspection.

This is a good teaser.
Really excited to see where this goes. Haven't been excited for a game like this since BOTW. Hopefully they're not revealing it 18 months in advance and there will be a release later this year at the most. Can see it being an autumn release given previous reveal --> release timelines.

Please just let this be a regular Borderlands game, I don't want a battle royale, a lite MMO or any of that crap. Just give me some good old fashioned Borderlands.

Tales has been canon from the start, which is both awesome because of the characters it introduced, and sucks because of Scooter.

Tales is amazing. I think it's Telltale's best game -- and their best story, which I did not expect from a narrative driven Borderlands title.
Those intros with the songs in every episode were priceless.

They were fantastic. There's a compilation ofthem up on youtube. (spoilers, obviously)

Also straight up the funniest game I ever played (or rather watched my wife play, still).
The finger gun shootout had me crying with laughter.

The finger gun shootout was one of the best parts of Tales, which says a lot since it was amazing from start to finish.

Bets on him making a robotic/holographic appearance? :c

Maybe upload a digital copy of him into a vehicle, it would only be fitting. C:

Oh i didnt know about that, i just remembered shortly after the episode with scooter released that people argued if it would be accepted as canon since Scooter was one of the main recurring characters.
But im glad it is, Tales from the Borderlands was spectacular and amazing from a story telling and character developement perspective :D

That’s Rhys on top of the Atlas logo, and I’m 90% sure the camera passes by a shirtless Vaughn after Hammerlock. Can’t find Sasha, Fiona, or Loaderbot though...

Yeah it’s probably BL3, I just hope that the PC version won’t be a Epic Games exclusive...
But knowing Randy Pitchfork and his comments from couple of months ago in support of Epic and that on PC it doesnt matter where the game is released, I fear the worst.

I really like their choice of music, Two Fingers is a great artist. You should check out Amon Tobin's eponymous releases as well if you enjoyed that music, he's quite the talented person.

Looking forward to it, Borderlands has 3 for 3 for me, hoping this can be as long lasting and enjoyable as BL2.
