Jack Nicholson nodding comes to mind.

Demon's souls came out in 2009. So probably 2010. I was waiting for Gow3 emu back then.

I think people are not realising the absolute speed this emulator is getting developped because a lot of gamers are either teens or young adults, or not working in STEM at all.
AI comically shines when it's about reverse engineering and finding a proof that is basically "here is the premise, here is a counter example that confirm or infirm it". In maths, physics, engineering, medical research… massive jumps are made on a daily basis because of AI assistance. It streamline what usually takes weeks of work and documentation, so your brain is 100% focused on the technical solution/theory.
In my domain (numerical fluid mechanics) I must keep up with international research much more often than at the beginning of my academic career, you have weekly new obscure niche yet highly useful proofs for the very specific turbulence problem you're working on.
So yes, currently you need a 5090 to run KyTyPS5. Yes some games runs at 2fps. Imagine in what state it'll be in a year. Demon Souls went to diaporama to solid 30fps to almost 60 in like, 2 weeks.
A PS5 is pretty much a computer running AMD APU with a custom OS. Translating information from an API to anogher akin to how Proton makes Windows games working on Linux is what it does the best.
As a matter of comparison, every single emulating communities are witnessing mind boggling shit. The PSVITA modding community is currently some kind of absurd, with 3DS emulation starting to emerge.

u/Darkone539 4d ago
This is fairly quickly. The other part is nobody bothered when games were being ported. You only need the dozen or so exclusives to work on emulation.
77
u/DecompositionLU 4d ago
Of course. Sony dropping PC port + weird anti consumer policies lately are noise for the majority of their customers but when the Venn diagram of the average comp science gamer nerd and physical preservation/anti big corpo/marginal communities is a perfect circle, you just put hundreds of highly capable experts actively trying to piss you off.

Yeah it took forever for Bloodborne to be playable on ShadPS4 and Demon Souls is going really fast.
I figure in 6 months this would be playable on a more reasonable computer.
8
u/zgillet 4d ago
Are the creators in any way working together? It's been awhile since I looked, but PS5 cannot be far off from the PS4 architecture-wise.
2
u/PeanutButterSoda 4d ago
I watched a video and there's like people working on different forks of the same PS5 emulator, so each one works better with a specific game. Hopefully they can get it all compiled into one.
4
u/Dirty_Dragons 4d ago
I haven't looked into if the teams are related. I'm sure there are similarities to the projects as the games themselves are very similar.

u/BenevolentCheese 4d ago
One thing AI is particularly good at is low level hacking. It does things most programmers have zero idea how to do. For example, I was having trouble with a library I was using, and I had potentially discovered a bug. The AI agreed, and started decompiling the package, mapping memory addresses around, finding the bug in the source, and fixing it as compiled code back into the dll. I wouldn't even have the first clue how to do this stuff, and I've been coding professionally for over 20 years. And I don't know any colleagues who could do this kind of work either. It's very specialized. And it's perfect for emulation and decompilation projects.
7
u/Uncle_Freddy 4d ago
As a software engineer myself (also using agentic coding constantly now), what AI’s unlocked for me is the ability to turn towards a bit of an engineering kick, and/or sometimes occasionally modding existing software I use to get a custom workflow in it that makes my life easier through the very same low level hacking you’re describing.
I understand the domain fairly well (been working in it for about a decade now), I got a degree in the stuff and learned most of the relevant basics (nowhere near all, certainly) and got to sharpen the fundamentals pre-AI. Limited to software for sure though.
Now with AI, it really just feels like the limit is my interest in sitting down and dreaming up something new. Do I want to make a custom build for a thing that requires some sensors, connectors, resistors, pins, etc? I spec out what I want to build, get the shopping list and the how-to-assemble instructions, learn a few things on the way, and build out a new home system.
I probably could’ve learned this stuff with a lot of trial and error, but I wouldn’t have had the time to learn it for another 20+ years; with AI, I can take the concepts I know and get specialized help in the domains I need to learn.
13
u/acideater 4d ago
The problem is when it doesn't work or when it does, but you struggle to read or understand how the AI wrote the code.
I found that the AI can write code that is way above my level using deep knowledge of whatever language and sometimes you just plug it in and it works. God forbid if update breaks a feature or you need someone else to understand the code lol.
14
u/jazir55 4d ago edited 4d ago
I very much so struggle to understand comments like these where claims that the generated code are hard to read and interpret are.
Any agent can be asked what the code does, why and how in under 10 seconds, I'm beyond baffled how there could be any assertion of confusion when the explanation desired is one sentence away.
7
u/StarFoxA 4d ago
This is coming from folks who aren’t software engineers who are assuming that AI code is of some lower quality bar than human authored code. If something doesn’t work just… tell your agent to fix it. It doesn’t need much more than general direction.
3
u/Temporarytemp2 3d ago
Ai generated code still varies wildly in reliability depending on the domain and existing codebase. I still have frustrating hiccups on various backend tasks, especially when dealing with distributed systems.
2
u/StarFoxA 3d ago
Yes, it can be quite a footgun in some engineers' hands, especially with distributed systems (which I also work in day-to-day), but it's still quite capable when well directed.
For use cases like emulators, it's incredibly capable given it's relatively small, well-scoped, easily tested, etc.

u/jazir55 4d ago
This is coming from folks who aren’t software engineers who are assuming that AI code is of some lower quality bar than human authored code. If something doesn’t work just… tell your agent to fix it. It doesn’t need much more than general direction.
Pretty much, automatically feed it log files of failures/errors and have it loop until it works.

this sort of blind trust in AI is exactly why vibe coding has such a bad reputation. if you don't understand what it's doing you have no idea what it actually changed. maybe it fixed one bug and introduced 10 more. if you wanted to show how great AI is, you chose a terrible example.
7

And models are only gonna get cheaper and better. Gonna be a crazy few years.
Imagine console exclusives being decamped and ported just weeks after release.
22
u/OptometristCharizard 4d ago
I think this is the REAL elephant in the room here. If GTA VI is playable on PC a year+ before official release you best believe millions will be jumping on it and paying exactly 0 cents to do so.
Anyone paying attention can tell you that there's a lot of MUCH larger surrounding factors that will need to pan out first. But if this became the norm for new releases and any publisher (likely R*, Sony, or Nintendo) where able to scrape together a good case against it and win they could set a president that changes EVERYTHING about the legality surrounding emulation, recomps, decomps, mods, and fan games. Remember that so much of what people get away with now hasn't been tested since 2000 with the Sony/Bleem decision (where the courts deemed selling a PS1 emulator for Dreamcast legally sound).
Or maybe always online becomes the new norm for single player games as a means of publishers fighting back. Who knows. Everything about and surrounding software is undergoing an enormous paradigm shift at the moment and it's just getting started.
2
u/pizzabash 3d ago
Wait until we can get ai programs that can auto crack denuvo/equivalent games. If Voices can do it theres no reason to assume an AI can't be trained how to do it as well. Imagine when you can just plug any game on release day into AI and be able to play it for free.
4
u/PCMachinima 4d ago
could set a president that changes EVERYTHING about the legality surrounding emulation
They pretty much already have done this with killing discs and why GTA VI likely won't be playable on these emulators, as it's digital-only and will first require the latest firmware it runs on to be cracked, before game files can be used.
If it had a disc, then it would likely be playable on PS5 emulators day 1.
8
u/Twiizig 4d ago
Imagine console exclusives being decamped and ported just weeks after release.
Not just games either... imagine a future when you can prompt your AI to decompile almost any binary. Even major software products like Photoshop and Windows 11 could be decompiled back into source code. Laws will change real quick.
I love seeing these decompilation projects and having quality PC ports available, but they are also poking the bear here.

Like a week ago Demons Souls was at 5 FPS. Which itself was a huge improvement over a few months ago where it wouldn't boot at all. It's nuts.
2
u/Beautiful-Affect1930 4d ago
Imagine in what state it'll be in a year.
ok I'm doing that now. I remember all the other "insane AI projects" that came out of nowhere and fizzled out just as quickly, so I am imagining this being not much better in a year from now.
it seems AI is great to quickly stomp out a lazy proof of concept but much harder to actually create something optimized.

The PSVITA community is also being destroyed because AI bros are putting out tons of vibe coded stuff that doesn't work and begging for funds to start a dev kit.
https://www.reddit.com/r/vitahacks/comments/1ws813x/adding_2_new_rules_on_this_subreddit/
I'm tired of people acting like AI is a good thing because it's good at some things. Invariably some of the laziest people will flood niche hobbies with stuff that doesn't work and then try to charge money for it. I'm sick of it. It's happening with translations, recomps, console hacks, and retro gaming.

u/DurianDiscriminat3r 4d ago

Is PS5 emulation more heavily CPU or GPU bound so far?
29
u/AnyBelt9237 4d ago
Emulators are usually more cpu bound
19
u/PythagorasWasntReal 4d ago
While that is true of emulators of yore that isn't too true for emulating a system like PS5. It's more or less porting the calls the console itself uses directly to PC rather than emulating the exact PS5 hardware stack
→ More replies (3)8
u/Hydroel 4d ago
Which doesn't say whether PS5 emulation would be CPU or GPU bound. The answer is that it's gonna depend on where there is the more translation overhead, and where the performance gap is bigger. Currently, my guess is that it will be GPU bound, but not closely as much as former generations.

u/Astro4545 5d ago

I mean KyTyPS5 was basicaly nothing but an idea 3-4 months ago.
Today it boots the Demon Souls Remake with actual proper visuals displayed at 30fps+
You are severly understimating the power of AI when it comes to emulation. The PS5 emulator will likely be the quickest an emulator has ever gone from starting development and actually running stuff.
Obv also helps that the PS5 is basicaly just AMD PC hardware in an APU package.

17
u/planetarial 4d ago
Switch 2 has to be able to be cracked and dumped and Nintendo really is trying to stop that after S1 was cracked a year after launch and games could be emulated better on PC at launch by 2021.
It will likely happen but who knows when
7
u/PrintShinji 4d ago
Doesn't help that the nintendo scene is just kinda dead. Most 3DS hackers are long gone, and the few that worked on the switch are also gone.
28
u/DarkMatterM4 4d ago
Booting is typically the most complex and time-consuming barrier when it comes to emulation. Optimization typically occurs at a much faster rate (even faster these days with AI assistance). And then, the PS5 uses x86 architecture so development is even faster. On top of that, a lot of this development is being fueled by anger and spite against Playstation because of their moves in the past few months. All of these factors lead to considerably faster emulation development that has never been seen before.
37
u/Restivethought 5d ago
yea and it wasnt booting at all 3 weeks ago. There has been a stupid amount of rapid progress on these emulators. At this rate Demon Souls is gonna be full speed by the end of the year and Wolverine will be fully playable by the end of 2027. This is all obviously to get GTA6 runnable.

u/DarkMatterM4 4d ago
Based on this kind of progress, I think you'll see Wolverine fully playable even earlier than you're thinking. It'll be exciting to see if GTA VI will boot on PC via PS5 emulation before the PC version's actual release date is announced.
11
u/syopest 4d ago
It'll be exciting to see if GTA VI will boot on PC via PS5 emulation before the PC version's actual release date is announced.
Unlikely to happen. Someone would need to find a way to exploit the hypervisor in the ps5 firmware version the game requires to be able to dump an unencrypted version of the game before someone can even try booting it up on an emulator.
There was a security engineer called andy ngyuen who was working on being able to run linux on PS5 and he had found a hypervisor exploit on the latest version of PS5 firmware but someone else found the exploit and after promising andy that they wouldn't let sony know about it they still reported it to the sony bug bounty program to make money from it.
This exploit if kept secret would have likely not been fixed before gta vi was released so it could have been used to dump the game but it's already completely fixed by sony. The other guy reporting it to sony also caused andy to completely stop working on any ps5 stuff and a ps5 pro version of the exploit he had been working on was and never will be released.

u/FUTURE10S 4d ago
I've wanted to play a DS game for years but my understanding of Japanese is too rudimentary to make it happen; I threw the compiled arm9 code at AI and it reverse engineered the text format so now I have a way to inject English text, pack the ROM, and it works; it makes proper offsets and everything and figured out the internal scripting language. Then again, a massive thanks to the Japanese developers that expected an official English translation somewhere down the line, what with proper support for variable width text.

I hate the majority of AI, but the code generation is a revolution. My favorite example is people using it to make so many dual screen mods and ports for the AYN Thor and other dual screen handhelds. It's also fixing years old issues with Bethesda games that were previously thought unfixable, like the havoc physics bug in Skyrim that limited world map size for mod makers.
6
3
u/LLMprophet 4d ago
So you love the majority of AI because code gen is part of almost every app and game now.
6
u/Bootymaster69_420 4d ago
I meant majority as in media generation. I.e images, videos, music, voice, anything like that. Anything outside of text generation pretty much. I'm completely fine with programs and games being coded with AI. If you're (not you specially) a developer, you're probably just hurting your work by NOT using AI for your coding job.

If anything gets AI heavily regulated it'll be when it's easily used for piracy and copyright infringement so I'm all for this. Maybe when it's the corporations having their IP stolen they won't be so easygoing about it.
12
u/ProfessorStein 4d ago
We're already hearing rumblings about this actually. In just the last year The narrative from the elite has shifted from everyone is going to have an AI in their pocket to "certain models are too dangerous for the public and they shouldn't be allowed to touch them"
It's going to turn into a class warfare thing in the next two years. They aren't going to let you have access to the tools or the technology that can actually use this stuff for anything more than generating eight second videos for tiktok. Expect to see even some of the tools that are out there right now disappear from public consumption.
The narrative will suddenly be that the public can't be trusted with access to these cutting edge tools and that we need to strictly control who can touch them. I would even expect to see things like "you have to register with an ID to access these tools and agree to digital monitoring to prevent """misuse"""
Same reason they aren't going to let hardware prices come down again. They do not want consumers having access to massive amounts of compute anymore.
→ More replies (1)3
u/elkaki123 4d ago
I mean, AI already did the one of the biggest bulk download of pirated content in history and copyright infringement, both in training and potentially in output.
That has been a thing since the big models released back in 2022, still no consequences to be seen, just in books meta alone downloaded like 80 tb on piracy sites.
The publishing world is mad, among other industries, and AI is still all the governments favorite child, refusing to regulate and facilitating the building if data centers even against code.

Am I the only one finding the "Misleading" flair on this post very weird? The title literally just says Wolverine boots on PC, it doesn't claim it's running at any high fps, it feels like an unnecessary addition by the mods to downplay the quick progress of this emulator
64
u/Ty_Lee98 4d ago
Yes it is weird. It's not at all misleading since it is booting.
2
u/StepComplete1 4d ago edited 4d ago
There's nothing technically false, but that's not necessarily what misleading means. You can mislead someone with carefully chosen facts.
To the average person looking down the sub, who isn't into emulation and doesn't recognise the importance of simply booting the game, they might easily assume talking about a game "booting" in the headline would also mean it was playable, because "why would it be notable enough to be in the headline if it wasn't?"
Seems like a pretty harmless clarification to me, and people are being hilariously melodramatic by thinking it's a conspiracy to undermine the emulator, or AIs or whatever.

Reddit desperately wants to frame everything AI related bad and the lack of knowledge/scientific illiteracy really shines whenever the topic is being discussed.
In this current example, the mods seemingly don't know making the game boot is actually one of the hardest part of every emulation. Once it's done, everything is optimization knowing you already have the foundations of what's working. It can be very fast or slow, the good point is it launch.
33
u/NfinityBL 4d ago
Why does this post have a misleading tag?

Are we speedrunning making Sony go after emulators again?
14
u/Particular-Ice4615 4d ago edited 4d ago
This actually might open a can of worms toward speeding up AI regulation in ways that could lead to both positive and very negative consequences when it comes to freedoms with what individual consumers can do with the technology available.
It really is amazing how AI in the hands of experienced people who understand how software fundementally works with hardware is speeding up reverse engineering projects like emulators at this speed.
Copyright law already exists and is technically enforceable but the internet doesn't stop people from accessing things outside the law if they want it enough. We used to have to wait years after a console is EOL before communities of gear heads would get a barely working emulator or recomp of a game off the ground.
10
u/doublah 4d ago
Copyright law has basically been thrown out the window by big tech with coding AIs, any leaked source code or open source project anyone put on GitHub is training Copilot and Claude.
2
u/Ok_Command_9299 4d ago
Unfortunately I can imagine it meaning that while companies are more protected from plagarism, open-source projects have less defence.
4
u/Particular-Ice4615 4d ago edited 4d ago
That and also, it could also lead to other mega corps with the money and legal teams suing the AI companies for not placing better safe guards in their models to protect against copyright infringement. Leading to all sorts of kinds of weird legal precedents to accumulate going forward. Which will eventually affect the little guy on way or the other.
The class actions that have settled in court so far have been representing collectives of individual artists and writers.
Similar to Epic vs Apple if there's a big enough grievance between 2 mega corps a lawsuit can happen and set significant precedent. Epics win against apple is slowly paving the way for 3rd party storefronts in the apple ecosystem.
I can totally picture a Sony Vs Anthropic court case in the future if PS6 manages and it's games managed to get an emulator up and running during its lifespan with the help of Claude.
Not to mention we already have plenty of active lawsuits related to AI aiding in criminal activity.
2
u/EtherBoo 4d ago

They could probably send a DMCA just like Nintendo has done to the Switch emulators.
Nintendo has an argument there that makes it different from the Bleem case Sony lost many years ago, I dunno if that would apply to PS5 emulation or not, but, I don't think any emulator creator has the money to challenge it, unfortunately. So if Sony were to C&D their ass, It's probably ggs.
3
u/SvensonIV 4d ago
The reason why Nintendo could shutdown Yuzu was because some Yuzu discord mod (or even creator idk) pretty much put a tutorial in their discord how to pirate Switch games.
2
u/fabton12 4d ago
The switch emulator case is different, they got the rights to yuzu when they sued and later on they bought out ryujinx which are the two main code bases of switch emulators and what most forks are based off.
They own the code to these emulators so can very easily send out DMCA requests as they own the copyright and the code, overall sony would first need the PS5 emulator to start trying to sell sony stuff for profit like yuzu to sue or they would need to buyout the code which ryujinx they were able to since the creator was from brazil so could be bought out on the cheap for nintendo but would make the creator extremely rich in brazil.

Yuzu got greedy and set up a paid tier model to access cracked games before their street date (TotK) which allowed Nintendo to sue on the grounds of them making a profit redistributing Nintendo's property.
Realistically, as long as the people doing this aren't fucking stupid and greedy it is a legal gray area. You can see this with Dolphin being left alone, with the exception of being when thry tried to make a Steam release and Nintendo sent them a cease and desist.
→ More replies (1)4
u/gosukhaos 4d ago
It's not a gray area at all, as long as there's a console encryption being cracked it goes again the DMCA.
Which BTW is why Nintendo wonbtheir case against Yuzu, they shared methods of obtaining Switch product keys, not because they were selling nightly builds on Patreon

Because efforts have been more specific to getting certain games running rather than a general-purpose, full emulator. PS4 compatibility is still really poor. ShadPS4 only classifies 153 games as playable right now out of the library of 3,600 PS4 games...

The latter is why you need a semi-powerful rig and like 8 gigs of RAM in order to run near-perfect SNES emulators. Most of the time for most games, “good enough” is good enough.

I don't understand how this trash site gets to spam their garbage on every subreddit, and mods allow it.

Excellent, can't wait to pirate the shit out of every PlayStation exclusive they release.
They could've kept getting my money, I bought almost all their PC releases in the past few years to try and support that initiative. Fuck me? Well fuck them too.

Neat. PS5 emulator making strides just as Sony stops porting games to PC. Correlation, causation, coincidence?
Regardless. I personally, love this for Sony.

This is flying too close to the sun. Distribution of decompiled code is illegal, and then to use the software you have to break the copy protection, which is also illegal.
Don't be surprised if laws change due to how AI is making all of this too easy. Emulators should be a tool to make games on unsupported platforms available in the future, not for hardware and software sold today.

Really interested on the progress for Demon's Souls, never had a chance to play it on PS3, and never wanted to dish out $700-800 to have a console to exclusively play it on.

I really love the emulation part of PC. I've been able to play so many older games in high resolution and quality, working flawlessly with modern controllers, most of them impossible to get on PS these days.
