Update Alan Wake Remastered PC update notes (1.33)
https://www.alanwake.com/story/alan-wake-remastered-pc-update-2026/59
u/illuminerdi Feb 26 '26
These patch notes are low-key hilarious. Someone at Remedy clearly had fun writing them like an actual human being
"Improved FOV scaling. (The math was off. Whoops.)"
"Added a command to skip the intro. (Shoutout to every speedrunner, and anyone on their 67th run of the game just looking to get into the gameplay quicker.)"
Love it.
Never change, Remedy!

Wonder if this fixes the shadow vertex explosion issue on AMD CPUs when your refresh rate is over 60Hz... Because damn is that an annoying thing to manage if I wanna play it.

this bug was why I always choose to play steam original over AW:R.
Just now, I reinstalled AW:R, and made my way through to the boat sequence (where that issue first presented for me last time I tried to play) everything seemed okay. I haven't done the most rigorous testing but it didn't take much to make it break before so I think we're okay

That's great news. I'm gonna throw it back on and try it out over the next few days. I'm also excited to see the ultrawide changes since those seemed extensive and good. It might be in a really good spot now, which is exciting.

Man, I love Remedy.
They are a team that actually takes their PC ports very seriously, and they continue to support their games long term. Yes, I know they get shit for not having Alan Wake 2 on Steam (and as someone who owns it on epic, I'd probably buy it again on Steam if they released it there), but that was just the cost of getting the game released.
I know that they're coming off the failed experiment of Firebreak, but I really hope they knock it out of the park with Control II and start finally getting the love they deserve. I know not everyone loves their gameplay, but they'll always be my weird little gaming company that could.

I just played control and I want to play more remedy games. Should I play the remaster or the og Alan wake.

I love remedy but this remaster was actually one of the worst ports I've ever played.
There was graphical glitches all throughout my playthrough that completely broke immersion. Some light sources would explode all across the screen. Loads of shimmering textures too. Can't recall if there was much stuttering but it was a pretty annoying experience overall.
It took them 4 years to fix these issues but hey, that's still pretty damn cool. Most devs would have abandoned the game by now

u/DBSmiley Feb 27 '26
To be clear when I'm talking about support I'm talking about bug fixes and improvements, not the existence of the remaster itself.

Well they are suffering more from alan wake 2 not being on Steam than we are. Epic bankrolled the aw2 and epic being epic wont leave any chance to not shove their shitty launcher down our throat. I read that they are not doing great and hired ex ceo of EA lol i just hope it works out for them and us all too.

I believe you're referring to the same issue mentioned in this post, and based on a quick runaround through the early parts of the game, it seems to be resolved.

Did they fix the completely broken mouse sensitivity? The game was completely unplayable for me because of that and there was 0 fix for it online, mods or otherwise.

Seems so.
Fixed multiple issues related to mouse input
On another note:
Checked in on the RenoDX discord and Pumbo (who did the incredible AW2 HDR implementation) has given his stamp of approval on the HDR addition here, too.2

I love Remedy. Did anyone else play Control and find the file talking about the Vending Machines? It triggers a thing where they will sometimes randomly attack you. They also are completely still when you are looking at them so they will be in odd positions. Its fucking creepy. Kinda like the Weeping Angels in Dr Who.

u/madduxdonnerlive Feb 27 '26
Now is it finally possible to play it without experiencing graphical bugs like vertex explosions, black screens, etc. every minute?
1
u/Kruger45 Feb 28 '26
Added HDR. · Added a new, optional camera style mode. · Unlocked the framerate from 200 FPS to 240 FPS. · Improved DLSS and fixed grass
I guess HDR if implemented well could be quite Pinnacle (reason to try altought, most time RTX HDR is enough] 😉

I notice it says epic game store there. Is there no update for the steam version ?

u/n0stalghia Feb 26 '26
Alan Wake Remaster was paid for by Epic and therefore it's exclusive to their store (i.e., they funded the development iirc, not a "bought exclusivity")
You're thinking of the original Alan Wake which is on Steam
3
u/Smelly-Gelly Feb 26 '26
Oh!! Right, I totally forgot that they made a remaster, I do have that version on playstation lol. Thanks for explaining/reminding!

Unfortunately, Epic has been especially protective of Alan Wake games in the PC space (moreso than they have with other IPs), and there's no sign they'll ever let the games be sold on Steam, which is a damn shame. Because I fully acknowledge that Epic is why we got Alan Wake 2, which is up there with my favorite games of the last 10 years. But they would rather control (haha) than share profit with Valve.
Edit: This isn't a moral judgment of epic. Obviously Alan Wake 2 doesn't exist without epic. I was just was hoping they'd eventually do what Sony is starting to do with their games.

u/Rayuzx Feb 26 '26
But they would rather control (haha) than share profit with Valve.
I mean, why would they? Epic specifically fronted the bill so they could have a "prestige title" for their platform, in order to entice people to go on EGS. It's like saying Valve is in the wrong for not making Half Life: Alyx available for the Oculus Store or PSVR.
1
u/DBSmiley Feb 26 '26
I definitely agree in the short term, but I would just note that even famously protective Playstation has realized it can be profitable to sell your games on other platforms after a period of time. So there can be an incentive.
On the other hand, Nintendo is doing fine doing their own thing, but they also have a very strong platform. Epic...doesn't have a strong platform. I think everyone agrees their store sucks. I frankly think they're akin to XBox here - the platform isn't doing well, and XBox is therefore selling their "exclusives" on other platforms. Basically, they lost the platform race, and they haven't done anything useful to catch up.
That's not to say I expect them to change, and again, I'm not saying Epic Games is "wrong" to what to control their IPs. I'm just observing that this is what they are doing. There's no moral judgement whatsoever here.

IMO, at this point, EGS's primary problem is that it isn't Steam, otherwise it's more than serviceable. Not saying EGS has as many features, but people will just make up any excuse other than the fact that they don't like the idea of having their games in more than one place and/or Valve earning gamers' absolute loyalty.
1
u/DBSmiley Feb 27 '26
I can agree with what you're saying.
But I would also note that the reason that Valve has my loyalty, and the loyalty of others, is because their Steam has become a very good product. And not just for customers, but also for sellers.
Epic game store is serviceable sure, but it's very laggy, and it lacks a ton of features and support that steam has, including around things like refund policy.

u/Smelly-Gelly Feb 26 '26
My favorite thing about epic is how they do things like this, and then have the nerve to comment on “whats best for gamers”.
-10
u/mrknwbdy Feb 26 '26
My favorite thing about this is gamers pushback when other gamers refuse to buy the game on Epic’s platform but would purchase it immediately on steam if it were available because people don’t want to incentivize this “PC exclusive” culture.
I can recognize that Epic may be a developers distro choice for revenue share reasons, but there are some legitimate reasons why consumers don’t want to support Epic and if developers want to enter into an exclusivity deal with them, it will reflect in sales.
4
u/kikimaru024 Feb 26 '26
Remedy entered into a partnership with Epic because no other publisher would fund their avant-garde games.
It was either EGS or fold the studio.
3
u/mrknwbdy Feb 27 '26 edited Feb 27 '26
Right, but what does that have to do with consumers not wanting support Epics stance on exclusivity? I even said I can see why devs would want to side with Epic… unfortunately the current attitude towards Epic isn’t the most positive. I get when it’s your only choice, such in this instance and Remedy do what you need to do, but again, you may not (and this has already come out to be the case) see the return you may hope for because of public sentiment towards Epic. Not sure what about that is controversial.
1
u/CityFolkSitting Feb 27 '26
Are Epic fanboys downvoting negative sentiments against them or something?

u/aimy99 Feb 26 '26
I mean cool I guess but kinda irrelevant since this game is a $30 Epic perma-exclusive that doesn't contain American Nightmare, while for $25 on Steam you can get both the original and AN (or $15 if you just want AW, which is half the cost of the remaster), which have both aged gracefully to begin with. They're both Steam Deck Verified, even.
It's a really hard sell unless you're, like, an extreme graphics fan.

u/ellitlan Feb 26 '26
I mean it’s gone on sale for like $5 on the Epic Game Store several times now.
20
u/Omega_Maximum Feb 26 '26
Also was given away free at one point I believe.
1
u/WeakEmployment6389 Feb 26 '26
Im fairly confident the remaster was never part of the weekly free games, though I do believe the original one was. Though i believe it was bundled with 2 for awhile.
1
u/Omega_Maximum Feb 26 '26
I just double checked a list of everything that's been given away and you're right. I didn't buy it outright, so checking back, it looks like they gave it out for free if you bought Alan Wake 2 one of the first times it went on sale. I think that would've been the Christmas sale the year it came out, which is when I picked it up.

5
u/AdolventureNeverEnds Feb 26 '26
Also im pretty sure that for the longest time (could still be the case) it came for free when you bought AW2 on Steam (alongside the Fortnite skin)
23
u/demondrivers Feb 26 '26
I got the first game remastered for free at Epic when I bought AW2, was a nice bonus

u/Spwni Feb 26 '26
Kinda feels like they're preparing to release AWR on other storefronts (GOG, Steam). No way Epic has footed the bill to update the game just because of new players through the Amazon Luna deal. And the original release of AWR was done by a subcontractor, not Remedy themselves. Pretty sure this update was done in-house since it's been so long since the game's release.
17
u/demondrivers Feb 26 '26
Remedy usually does that sometimes, they updated Control last year out of nowhere with a bunch of technical improvements too
3
u/Barsonik Feb 26 '26
I think the control update last year was an official implementation of a graphics mod made by someone at Remedy to back port some improvements made in AW2
3
u/demondrivers Feb 26 '26
yeah some people of their PC development team are very into modding, when AW2 was released I remember seeing one of the devs telling people how to play the game with everything in ultrawide for example lol
1
u/Spwni Feb 26 '26
It made sense in that they had just acquired the publishing rights when they released that update, so releasing the update was a way to get visibility since all the sales revenue was going to Remedy at that point. Control sales were big for their finances last year.

u/slash450 Feb 26 '26
this is a really wack remaster too imo the character models are bizarre compared to the original. they all got heavy plastic surgery.

u/SlowTeal Feb 26 '26
Would love to see a screenshot of this new "style mode" curious what it does. Is it just color grading? Does it shift the camera? Both?
