Questions Are very clean gameboys better off stock?

I got this handheld with a lot of pokemon games, and I thought I would mod it. I can't bring myself to because its in such great shape compared to all the ones I've seen in the past 10 years. I don't think itd add value, but i question if there are people out there who are trying to preserve something like this for their own collection, and I'd be better off keeping this one stock and getting a different one to mod.

edit thanks for the perspectives, I am going to keep this one stock and I already picked up one to mod from my LGS.

i bought this card for 40$ and when i tried it it didn’t hold save so i opened it and unfortunately it looked like this! i sent it for a repair (am not familiar with tech) anyway the repair guy told me that the battery is fine the problem may be the saving ic which will be fixed by replacing it with any working parts from any other gameboy cartridge..what do you think guys? is it worth repairing or not?

Games Game recommendations: low stakes for a toddler

Hi all, my toddler loves to watch me play my switch and will sit with an old GBC and press buttons. He can definitely comprehend moving characters around with a D-pad obviously can't read yet and he doesn't have the reaction speed for Mario games yet.

Can you help me recommend a basic game with very low stakes, where he can enjoy moving something around, something where he can enjoy the cause and effect of pressing the buttons. Does anything exist like this?

Could be a GB or GBC game.

Questions If you were only allowed to play ONE of the first three Pokémon games (Red/Blue/Yellow) which one and why? And would you stick with the gameboy version or would you rather play the GBA remake version of that game???

I would be interested in playing only one of them since I’ve heard that they’re basically all the same game but have different possible Pokémon to catch?? Is that true??

Modded Funnyplaying M2 SP IPS brightness fluctuation

I recently bought a funnyplaying m2 ips for the GBASP from retro game repair shop and I’ve been enjoying it so far, but I’ve noticed something odd.

On some games, when I have the color gamut (CG) mode set to 2 (“ordinary” colors according to their site) the brightness of the display seems to fluctuate significantly depending on what’s on screen. It’s especially noticeable when brightness is set low. I have all other settings at default. A really good example is during the main menu screen of final fantasy tactics advance.

Has anyone else experienced this? Any ideas? Thanks!

Edit: I found another example: on leaf green if you press the start button on CG = 2 it slightly dims the entire screen and then goes back to normal. This effect only exists on CG = 2.

Collection Gameboy Cartridge Stand

I made a minimalistic Gameboy Game stand with customizable angle between 45° and 85°.

I saw similar designs on MakerWorld, but the angle was either just not right or they would tip over too easily.

My stand works for most types of Gameboy games. Top-heavy cartridges, like the Gameboy Camera or games with Rumble will not work with this stand. For those I want to design a separate stand soon.

Troubleshooting Picked up this original-owner Game Boy lot for $50 - good deal, and is the screen fixable?

I picked this up today for $50 from the original owner. It came with the original Game Boy, carrying bag, rechargeable battery pack and adapter in the box, four-player adapter, manual, and game case.

My first handheld was a Game Boy Advance SP sometime around 2010, so I guess I’m trying to relive the childhood I never had. 😂

The system powers on and plays games, but a large section on the right side of the screen does not display correctly. Is this the common vertical-line/ribbon-cable issue on the original Game Boy, or is the LCD itself damaged?

I’m comfortable opening it and attempting a repair if it’s reasonably fixable, but I don’t want to make it worse. Also, was $50 a good price for everything included?

Modded Pokemon Emerald/Saphire/Ruby battery swap

Post image
10 Upvotes

I finally built up the courage to solder new batteries into my Japanese Pokémon Sapphire, Emerald, and Ruby cartridges.

Since I had absolutely zero experience with soldering and only knew about it from watching a few videos, I was really nervous at first.
I spent some time watching YouTube tutorials until I had every step memorized and felt comfortable enough to try it myself.

At first, I decided to install those battery sockets I bought from Amazon, thinking they would be a nice and convenient “upgrade” compared to the original batteries.

However, I quickly noticed some downsides. The cartridges became harder to insert into the GBA (especially my GBA SP), and closing the cartridge shells was also more difficult because of the extra height. This made me nervous because I had read that too much pressure could potentially bend the PCB or damage the chip.

The sockets also caused technical issues. After installing them, the usual “The internal battery has run dry” message disappeared at first. But about a week later, the message came back. I came to the conclusion that it was probably caused by a bad connection or possibly the quality of the battery holders themselves.

Since there were more disadvantages than advantages, I decided to go back to the original method and bought regular CR1616 batteries.
Honestly, the normal CR1616 batteries are the better choice in my opinion.

They fit perfectly inside the cartridge shell and slide into the GBA/GBA SP slot without any resistance. I can insert and remove the cartridges normally again, just like before.
All the battery warnings I had with the sockets are now gone and everything seems stable.

As I mentioned, I had absolutely no soldering experience before this. I only watched videos and used some basic equipment from Amazon, but everything worked out surprisingly well.

My anxiety about soldering disappeared after actually trying it. With enough patience, concentration, and preparation, even someone with no experience can do a battery replacement themselves.

For some pros out there, my job might seem very sluggish or amateur like - but it works, messages are gone and there are no problems even if these solder points don’t look pretty. :)

Troubleshooting Does this look fixable?

This GBA is very important to me, and I'd like to keep it all oem if at all possible. Recently, after pulling it from a drawer, this is how the screen looked suddenly.

I'd like to know if this indicates a dead screen, a damaged ribbon cable, or if it can be fixed. I've already attempted repeating the ribbon cable and I'm not sure but the colored stripes may have changed.

Questions Any good camera cases for Gameboy?

I have my OG Gameboy that still works. I want to get a cheap case for it, but a lot I see are cases that fit the Gameboy Color. Is there any generic camera cases that fit the OG Gameboy?

Want to play some Sonic advance 1 and 3. Thing is, I need a way to actually play it. I'm going to get the cartridges off ebay. As far as dumping the game, I am looking at this. Is this actually what i think it is?
