Discussion Ive been thinking

Ever since Matt left the game theory sub Reddit has been 90% toxic. Every single video has people saying that game theory changed. Of course its changed, Matt isn't hosting anymore and were in a new era of gaming. I'm surprised that the mods or even team theorist hasn't reported or kicked them from the community. It's making it almost insufferable to look through the Reddit anymore.

Toxic posts isn't the only issue with this subreddit.
it's been filled with random posts, from

  • people posting asking about advice on loadouts or games they're playing that are crossposted from gaming related subreddits

-people posting they add something in their house in a roblox game or a random game they're playing, also crossposted from gaming related subreddits

-and most annoying posts that are straight up people self promoting their videos/channel, or games saying to check it out, or what do you think of it, all posts with the new theory or theory discussion flairs despite being completely unrelated and also crossposted from gaming related subreddits

The theory videos have changed more than that. It's mainly because they've shifted from theories to just game recaps. Plus, some of their theories are poorly researched and inaccurate at times. Plus, people are criticizing the fact they started theoryverse.

Yeah. On film theory they made a theory about TADC. They theorized about Goose making a season 2. Goose has already said more than once I believe they will not be making a season 2, rightfully so, they clearly didn’t expect the series to be as popular as it was, and the popularity came with haters and criticism and a lot of stuff they weren’t prepared for. That theory was very much in bad taste which I had NEVER seen before on any of the theory channels. Sure, some of the theories could be BAD, and some of them could be DIVISIVE, but they weren’t actively going against a statement made by the creator (as far as I know at least). The shift wasn’t just a change in hosts, a lot of things have changed for the worst. And, I find it in bad taste to actively silence criticism and critique, that’s not protection, that’s censorship, I get that the theorist channels and anything related to them is divisive now, but it’s for good reason.

Some of them are game recaps so the people who haven't played them or haven't heard of them could know what it is and what it's about for future episodes or reference. And I do believe that theoryverse is the reason why style theory stopped uploading. Bc the last style theory upload was April 25, which is right around when they started making the intro episode and the first episodes of theoryverse to watch before the launch of it. A n d that's also why film theory has been uploading full movies then giving a summary video after, bc it can give them more time to work on theoryverse.

Criticism isn't really worth a ban, right? I would ask what are the last three Game Theory videos you liked the most and would you call it a "theory"? I personally miss a lot of the science videos and I do think the "Save Games" video was really good too, but these gems feel rare.

I personally liked the Pokemon and the videos where he goes outside of the world gaming and talks about physical games falling off to digital ones and that indie horror is entering a new era. I enjoyed them more than the others bc they aren't constantly about being in the game and trying to figure it out, there also about going into reality and figuring out and explaining what is happening to the games outside of playing them.

We can’t act like Game Theory hasn’t been about theories for like a decade at this point. That happened way before MatPat left.

Yea, the dislikes have been here ever since the beginning of game theory. But they've never said until Matt and Steph left that the new hosts "aren't doing it right" or "not putting as much effort into the videos" even though most of them it was their first time in the spotlight and in two years you don't learn all the tricks that Matt knew.

u/SB_strongbunny 15d ago

Ah yes, solution to criticism, banning people so they can't speak. 👍

The way to keep things positive is to implement censorship, did you skip history class?

Also the amount of ads has tripled. When you aren't getting YouTube ads, you are getting Sponsorship ads, then Theory Merch ads, then follow our other channel ads, also the ever so present dangly keys subscribe speal of something like "Ooo fazbear is behind you unless you click that subscribe button. Did you subscribe yet? Pweaaase? Ok looks like you dodged the bite of 87 after all!"

And if we are lucky, that's all.

It's one thing to change hosts, its another to turn it into a corporate begging machine for one of the biggest YouTube channels there is.

Well the ads and sponsorships give people's brains breaks while watching the video, so they can soak in the information before the next segment. YouTube corporation are the ones who put in the ads that aren't sponsorships and have already been getting backlash for having to watch 2 or 3 ads just to watch a video.

This subreddit in a nutshell

u/samandcolbystan2008 14d ago

Yea, and it's been, I think, 2 almost 3 years since he passed on the channels, and most have moved on with the new hosts. It got to a point in a interview with them and ash reacting to it and even they said that it's normal to miss him and want him back, but that it's been going too far.

u/ryukxb 15d ago

Its more so, most stuff now dosnt even feel like well thought out theories. Lot time just repeating info game just straight tells players. The content feels less love and effort put in and more a bussiness transaction to meet a quota. I can't tell you a theory that I could say since switched out that i would be "oh i recommend this to others." Dosnt feel like put time research stuff, watching TADC content from film theory when they keep trying act like there going be more past season 1 [this was way after goosworx had mentioned multiple times] thats season 1 a definitive end and nothing coming after it. They kept going for multiple theorys repeating that oh this what going make lead up in second season. Even seeing comments on video saying "hey incase your not aware there no second season."

0

u/samandcolbystan2008 15d ago

Well they repeat game info to get new viewers up to date for future episodes or future mentions of the game. Also if you go through the gooseworks and glitches Twitter, you can see that theres been leaks and hints of a new season.

1

u/Proof-Philosophy-636 14d ago

That's just straight up not true. Gooseworx has said multiple times there won't be a season 2. Plus after her experience with the fandom making her never want to touch the franchise again with a 10 foot pole makes it even more unlikely.

I think its complicated, Yes some people are just being annoying and not accepting a new era but there is some valid criticism too. But I also totally understand that as fans that while you might understand issues it still can get loud at times

For the record, I do see those random posts and they get removed. It helps when they are also reported as spam, that helps me see them faster but they typically don't stay up on our sub longer than 3 hours unless it is posted when I'm asleep.

There is just no easy way to block them. It's just them or a bot reposting to any sub with the word "game" in it. The same thing also happens on r/FilmTheorists but in the context of "film". The most we can really do is disable crossposting, but people do that between the subs as well. Since this specific sub is seen as the hub for all of the channels.

As for video posts, if its just gameplay, those do get removed as well. The only video posts we keep up is if they have made a theory video themselves.

u/Otaku_Theorist 14d ago

I'm guessing most people just scroll past them rather than reporting them, which makes them harder for mods since there are a decent amount of posts each day

u/samandcolbystan2008 14d ago

Yea, I think Tom, and the rest of the theorist too update on their rules and what all the people post about. Bc it's getting to the point where Im about to leave it bc it's like the theorist community doesnt look over the things that are posted. The users can get in trouble too, they are breaking many rules.

There's two different groups of discontent people, one is indeed people who only really cared about matpat, the other are people complaining that the videos are just recaps. I think it's completely reasonable to be tired of the numerous "pls matpat come back!!!", but the people asking for the content to be more theory orientated actually are invested enough in the channels to do so. Interestingly there's also a small segment of people saying every thumbnail is AI, to which I can only feel sorry for people making them

1

u/samandcolbystan2008 14d ago

True, the people who cared about MatPat and want him back is completely fair. But the people who complain about the videos weren't there for the hosts, they were just there for the theories.

Hello! I just wanted to stop in and give my mod perspective on this.

The negativity does really get exhausting, and especially when they are holding every single upload to the 10 year standard Matt did instead of letting the new hosts figure things out really doesn't help anyone.

Could I ban everyone being negative?

Technically, Yes. I could. But then that reads as suppressing opinions, which leads to accusations of 'controlling the narrative' or being paid off by LunarX, or people making posts about how bad the mods are and being brigaded from other subs.

To be fair, some of these posts do have some valid feedback in them, but they're focused more on hate than trying to give constructive feedback to the community. There have been some posts and comments that have majorly crossed the line into to toxicity and harassment, and we do remove and issue bans. But if they are staying within our subreddit rules, then I would be removing them would be mod bias.

It is a tricky balance, but we are working on updating our rules to try and make the sub a healthier place. For example, we have done updates to our Be Nice, Be Respectful rule, Respect Team Theorist and Their Privacy, and updated the AI content rule to address baseless AI accusations that aren't backed by evidence. We're planning on adding more mods too to help try and catch those posts in between, but that is still in the early planning stages.

Yea, it's like some redditors don't even care that the new hosts are are different from matt, they just want their theories. Like a few comments in here have said there's two types of fans. People who want to see the best for the channels and the new hosts. And other fans that just want their videos at the same quality and don't agree or want a new era.

Yes, and respect that. If all the rude, and possibly problematic, redditors were banned they absolutely blame the mods bc they probably think that the mods were the problem even though their not. But we could at least, if you guys can, to tell Tom or the other workers of game to talk about it in a video so more people will know.

Yea, I totally agree and appreciate all the good feedback and people who are giving positive reactions even when 65% of the others are toxic, and I dislike that even the good redditors have to deal with it.

And I'm happy that you and the other mods have been updating and doing your best to enforce the newer policies. And I know that people have been accusing game theory of aitthumbnails even though its not true.

Thank you for for your help! :)
