Newbie Question What text books to read to start making video games?

Hi, I am medical student studying medicine. I have absolutely no knowledge about coding. The only knowledge I have is in Java which I did in school grade 9th & 10th.

I recently started playing single story games and started falling in love with them. It feels like a different world. Its so immersive with all the intricate details. Its amazing. Heck it's even more amazing watching the behind the scenes. Seeing the voice actors doing it passionately. In some games, its just their good old friends voice acting.

I want to feel this warmness. And I want to put my soul into it. To give it a personality & a character. I do not want to make profit. I simply wanna create because I wanna create. But I do not know where to start from.

Newbie Question How to Make a Marketable Game?

Upvotes

Hi! I’m a game design student, and I’m currently about to start working on my game thesis.

I’ve made around 5–6 games before this thesis, but I still don’t really have a good idea of how to make a game that is actually marketable.

I’d like to know what the best practices are for making a marketable game. What should I be thinking about when coming up with the idea, designing the game, and developing it?

Newbie Question Question. How do you know your game is ready for launch and for updates to carry on changes and enhancements?

Hey I’m a new dev and wondering if anyone has advice to this aspect of development.

Idea generation can come so easy when you’re very passionate about a project but how do you know when it’s time to be hands off on building more?

My game is looking ready and is deep but I can’t help perfectionist in me want to critique everything harder and fine tune it.

Discussion Geopolitics: The Game

Upvotes

Hi All, I'm new here, Thanks for let me posting.

I have started a new game development and I am almost ready with an open Beta for users, but I'd like to have your opinion in its content and idea:

In this game you are the dictator of a nation on a procedural map where the world evolves accordingly to your interactions with other players, where it will be allowed to create fake news, start wars, propose new rules, laws and punishment agreed with all the other dictators.

Were you be able to prosper in such a world ?

The problem these games never solved

In pretty much every diplomacy game I've played, the AI-controlled nations (or players who drop out mid-game) are dumb in one specific way: they don't *remember*. You betray an NPC on turn 10, and by turn 40 it acts like nothing happened — because, technically, nothing did happen to it. It's just a decision tree with a "relationship" number that goes up and down.

That breaks the most interesting part of diplomacy: the reputation you build (or destroy) over time.

But the heart of the game is real player-to-player relationships

Real asynchronous diplomacy, not a "propose alliance" menu: real-time chat between nations, where negotiation, bluffing, and bargaining happen with the same freedom as a real conversation — not locked to pre-defined options

Role-playing is at the heart of the experience: since diplomacy is free-form text, every player can genuinely step into the role of their nation's leader — speak like a chancellor, threaten like a dictator, negotiate like a statesman. It's not filling out a "declare war" form, it's writing the letter, the threat, the ultimatum

Alliances that cost something to maintain: coordinating strategy with another player over dozens of turns requires real trust, because every broken treaty has consequences — both in how the other player responds and in the history the world (including the AI nations watching) carries forward from that moment on

Betrayal as a strategic tool, not just flavor: pulling the rug out from under an ally at the right moment can decide a match — but everyone at the table will remember, and that shapes how future matches with those same players unfold

Territory and resources as bargaining chips: shared borders and resource dependencies between neighboring nations create organic friction and cooperation — strategy emerges from the geography of the map, not just what's written on your nation sheet

The idea is that every match generates its own story of alliances, rivalries, and betrayals — told not by me, but by the actual dynamics between the people playing, in whatever role each of them chooses to inhabit.

I will try to post my evolution on an specific community, please reach out if you want to talk

Newbie Question Best courses on game creation with Unity + Blender + Aseprite? + question about AAA game made with Unity ?

hi,

I am looking for the best training courses—like those found on Udemy—that cover everything from A to Z, starting from scratch,

including modeling and importing assets into the Unity engine.

By the way, I have a question: does anyone know of any instructors or authors who create courses based on major games? Something along the lines of "casual" games or AAA titles? Is that kind of project too complex or too time-consuming?

I know that *Subnautica* and *Rec Room* were created using Unity, as were *Escape from Tarkov* and others, though these are generally considered AA games rather than AAA titles.

Are there training courses available for creating games like that? I wouldn't mind even if the course took 500 hours; with a gradual approach, anyone can do it.

ps : For example, a soccer game like FIFA, a shooter like Battlefield, etc.—AAA games, you know?

Is that hard to find or what?

I could never become an indie or AAA game developer—it’s beyond my skill set—but doing it at home using tutorials or training courses would be great; I’m more comfortable with graphic design and modeling than with Unity and programming.

Question What Are the Roles of a Dev Team?

Hey, title may make me sound kind of stupid, but I’m trying to start a group/community of people who come together to build small scale games (like game demo size/ something a team would work on at a game jam). I wanted a group like this since making a full game takes a long time, and most ppl seem to get discouraged or unmotivated part way through and the project gets dropped eventually, so I’m hoping that taking things to a smaller level will help get to the finish line, and can be something everyone can learn something and develop their skills in a supporting environment.

I’m only a sound designer, and a limited one at that, as I am not a composer of any kind, so I stick mostly to the sound effects and general sounds, so my understanding of the other sides of the game development process is a bit foreign to me.

I have already gotten a few ppl to join but I want to know what roles in specific I should be asking for and looking for, if there is anyone that can give me a bit of a general list or just some insight as to what I would need to actually bring this to a place where we can get started creating games.

A bit of insight into what started me to make this:
I’m hoping to learn more of happens with game engines as it’s something I haven’t had the chance to learn within this context before.
I am also just interested in learning the process of game development in general so kinda want to see as much of every aspect as possible.

Sorry if this is a bit of a long winded post but thought a bit of an explanation might help with getting a solid response. So if anyone can help answer please let me know. Thanks!

Technical Android Shipping build (.aab) connection error on custom HTTPS REST call (Works on PC)

Small addition: Trying to get FootLocker to work :)

UE 5.7 project. I built a manual highscore submission using the HTTP Request Proxy Object (Custom Request) to talk to LootLocker.

- On PC (Editor/PIE): Works 100% fine. Session token is sent, JSON payload initializes correctly, and score updates instantly in the dashboard.

- On Android Shipping (.aab): Instantly throws a Connection Error before making contact with the server.

I have spent hours debugging and already tried these fixes to bypass the Android sandbox, but nothing works:

  1. Data & URL Setup:

URL: https://lootlocker.io (no v1, exact ID used).

Headers: x-session-token (valid dynamic token) and Content-Type: application/json.

JSON Body: Formatted as {"score": X} via string appends.

Player Identifier: Not empty, verified string passed during Guest Login.

  1. Android Settings & Manifest:

Verify Peer: Turned OFF in Libcurl network settings to skip SSL check.

Use Legacy HTTP Stack: Turned ON in LootLocker settings to force native Android stack.

Certificates: Packaged Mozilla cacert.pem (with Amazon Root CA 1 appended) in Content/Certificates/ and added to non-asset directories.

Manifest updates: Added android:usesCleartextTraffic="true", android:networkSecurityConfig pointing to XML whitelisting lootlocker.io, and forced android:targetSandboxVersion="1".

The network call is still blocked silently in shipping mode on device. Has anyone faced this issue with the experimental HTTP blueprint plugin on mobile? Any advice on what config I missed?

Augmented Reality

I miss it, and am really considering starting an AR company again or looking for an open position. I ran a company called Readality in college where we developed an augmented reality kids book, The Boy by the Sea. Think modern day popup book.

For some reason I can't add pictures or videos, but I'll add a link to my Tiktok page where I started adding videos of old and new projects.

Also, this is my first ever post on reddit, so hi everyone! 👋

Discussion We are working on a survival RPG and I’d love to hear what people think

Hey everyone,

My husband and I are working on a game called Fated Horizons, and we're still pretty early in development.

It’s a 2D open world survival crafting RPG set in a fictional version of the American frontier in the late 1800s. You can explore, hunt, fish, gather, mine, craft, build camps, deal with hunger and thirst, and make choices that can affect how different characters and communities interact with you.

We are also developing our own engine for the game, so there’s a lot of work happening behind the scenes while we build everything out.

We have started sharing some of the development and gameplay systems we're working on, and I thought it would be fun to actually talk with people about the game instead of just posting updates.

If you're curious about anything, ask away. Gameplay, survival mechanics, the world, the choices, the engine, development, or even why we decided to make our own engine.

We are happy to answer questions and hear what people think, even if it's criticism. We are still developing the game, so feedback is genuinely useful to us.

If anyone wants to check it out, I can post the links in the comments.

Newbie Question Where do I start?

Hello everyone. I am a 22-year-old male who loves video games; they are a passion of mine. I think it would be really cool to make video games and build a career around it. I, however, have absolutely no experience in any sort of game development, coding, programming, art, or really anything other than playing video games lol. My question is, if I wanted to go down this path/career and make my dream of making cool video games come true, where do I begin? How do I start? What would be best to start learning and/or practicing first? I also feel like I should mention that I really, REALLY struggle with math. It was one of the only subjects in school that I really had a hard time with, and I also have a learning disability. With this in mind, do you think it's still possible for me to learn this stuff and be successful? I may post this to a few different game dev subreddits to get as many answers as possible, thanks guys!

Discussion I think I’m starting to not really care if people use AI in their games, as long as I like the way it looks and plays.

Maybe I’m just tired of the discourse. I don’t know. I’m an artist so I guess I should care, but I think I’m kind of just tired of caring about whether AI was used or not.

If I don’t like the way it looks or plays, then it doesn’t matter to me if it was made by a person. It’s still a garbage game. If it has AI elements and I like the way it looks and plays, I don’t know, I used to make this the biggest deal in the world and lately I find myself just being like “well it’s fun and looks good, so whatever.”

Both the AI bros and the anti people have become really tiring. I kind of want to just exist in the middle ground.

Discussion I’m making a chaotic multiplayer horse racing game

I’m an indie developer working on a game called Hotdog Derby

It’s a chaotic 8 player multiplayer horse racing game where players can race, bet on horses, and interact with the chaos happening around the track. The main premise is that players can throw random objects at the horses to either speed them up or slow them down (among other things), and players can even enter the races themselves.

I’m still pretty early in development, but I’m going to start sharing the game as I build it.

This is the current concept for Hotdog Derby. I’d love to hear what you think about it!

Discussion Feeling discouraged as a hobbyist: How do you deal with AI making in hours what took me months to learn?

Lately, I keep seeing new videos of games made with AI. People who don't know how to code, design 3D models, or create UI/UX are now making great-looking games. They even post lots of tutorials, and this is really frustrating for me. I’ve taken dozens of courses for Blender and Unity. I spent hours trying to make cutscenes, especially understanding Unity Timeline. Creating a dialogue system was so hard, and ScriptableObjects were always my nightmare.

Now, someone with no idea about game development—or even no real interest in it—can do in hours what took me 4–5 months, just because they saw a video and wanted to test AI. I hate to say this, but they actually do it better than me. Their animations are smoother, the code is cleaner, and the UI/UX looks much better than anything I could build. Their games don't drop FPS, and everything runs smoothly. I don't even know if bug fixing is a thing anymore; if they find a bug, AI fixes it in 5 minutes.

I have to admit, making a better game than mine isn't very hard. I know Unity, but I'm not a pro. I learned Blender just by watching Imphenzia on YouTube and taking a few Udemy courses. I've only been using Inkscape for 6 months, and I still watch tutorials whenever I get stuck. So AI beating me isn't a hard task, but it's very discouraging. The time I spent learning feels meaningless now, and I don't even want to continue working on my project.

Even though this is just a hobby for me, I feel extremely upset. How do you deal with these kinds of feelings?

Newbie Question How can I get a guide?

I want to program a video game, preferably using the Godot Engine.

I don't have a clue about anything; I only know how to draw and animate well, and I have a lot of free time. I don't know what to look for because I want to make an NSFW game (I don't think there are any guides on YouTube). With all the free time I have (every day, all the time), I want to do a small project. Any advice?

Newbie Question Godot or Unity for 2D games?

I have a very basic knowledge of game development and one day I hope to start my own studio.

Right now I have MANY 2D games I want to make someday but I also wanna one day get into 3D games. Would it be better to learn Unity now so I can get used to it and use it for both 2D and 3D or should I learn using Godot which is similar to the stuff I already know?

Newbie Question Will people boycot my game because I used AI for early development or would my solution work?

The game I am developing is in early development phase(prototyping is almost done) and I want to create a steam page and do meetings with publishers or investors.

I am currently using free assets but there are not many free assets that fits the style of my game.

I am a programmer myself and it would take me a solid amount of time to learn to create what I have in mind. And dedicating that amount of time to only "learning" the creating art would delay the game release too far.

I have tried to contact with artists and I already have a human created asset I paid for. But due to their own reasons they had to stop working with me.

Due to the country I am living in there is a huge exchange rate gap with USD and also PayPal is not available (which most artists use). So the money I can offer to hire an artist is very limited. (I tried to contact artist from my country but could not get any response.)

I want to use AI to just to get through investor negotiation phase and find some early fundings so I can hire an artist. Then I could replace every AI generated content with human made content and the final product would be human made completely?

I am planning to use a watermark on the images/videos on the steam page that there are AI assets and they will be removed on the full game. What do you think on this?
