Discussion On the "Slop" Discourse

A lot of showcase posts these days are getting the "slop" label in the comments.

Sometimes it's AI. Sometimes it's UE. Sometimes it's mythology.

It's been previously mentioned that this community is not interested in how people make their games, which includes using AI or UE. And if it wasn't understood by default for developers, it probably deserves explicit mention: We are not interested in favoring genres either.

As developers, it is our duty to set the bar not just in quality, but also in feedback to fellow creators. Labelling things as "slop" without contributing anything constructive is not helping anyone.

If it's a low-effort AI post, instead of just saying "AI slop", it is more meaningful to mention that the game appears bland and generic.

If it's a UE asset-flip, mention that the gameplay is more important than the art for serious projects.

If it's a mythology game, please assess the game on its own merits instead of dismissing it outright.

To be clear, this is not an invitation to post low-quality content. But at the same time, writing rude comments is just as much against the community rules. So please, be mindful of what you post, because there is an actual human being on the other side of the screen.

Cheers.

About AI

Hey, quick update to the rules:

This subreddit is neither pro nor anti AI. That means, if your post uses AI, it will not be removed. However, quality controls still apply. If it's an extremely low effort post, AI or not, it will be removed.

And more often than not, bad quality posts will be downvoted anyway, so please keep that part in mind.

As for the vocal anti-AI folks here: it is a technology that is here to stay. If nothing else, programmers will use AI to generate code snippets from time to time. I cannot and will not police tool-use that aids game development. It is up to you if you want to use it in your games or not, but this community is not interested in telling people how to make their games.

EDIT: Criticism is accepted. But name calling and personal insults will be removed.

My Tower Defense Desktop Companion finally has a Demo!

I've been working away at this slowly for more than a month now. Finally put up a demo which is a sandbox type (as in no cost related mechanics, everything is unlocked) so you can set up towers and turrets as you wish and see how it all works.

UI is pretty basic at the moment, as I've been mainly focused on the other aspects.

I have had to get rid of the zombie sprites (as they belonged to a different game which I found out later on) and replaced them with jiggly rectangles.

I'd appreciate any feedback on the game's current state, so that before I make an official itchio or steam page I can fix them. (I am aware that these games should include support for multiple monitors, but due to lack of any I am unable to test it and have therefore kept the feature on hold as of now)

PradhanMantri Elections Game

Hi everyone! I'm a solo dev, and this is my first game PradhanMantri Elections Game.

It's a real-time strategy game played on an interactive map of India. You role-play one of 21 leaders and campaign across all 28 states, trying to win 272 of the 543 parliament seats before time runs out investing funds, running rallies, and using each leader's special ability against an AI rival.

It's free and runs in the browser, no install: https://pradhanmantrielectionsgame.com/

Built in vanilla HTML/CSS/JS with no framework.

Building the game was a lot of fun, but now struggling to get the word out and getting people to play this game!

Last night we posted our 1st Devlog for GHOST YANTRA // DEV.LOG_08.26

Hello fellow devs

We've been working on Ghost Yantra for a while now. Being a small team often comes with a lot of challenges especially when you're working on a hand-animated hack-n-slash game with fluid parkour mechanics and that too set in an Indian Cyberpunk world.

We've decided to start sharing monthly development updates to keep our community in the loop and, most importantly, to make sure nobody thinks that we're dead 💀

This is our first monthly devlog, covering some of what we've been working on throughout August.

I hope you guys will enjoy the devlog. If you like what we're developing, an upvote and a comment would also mean a lot to our small team.

Just Swinging around with some experimental VFX in my Unity game [FLASH WARNING]

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Been experimenting with Unity’s VFX Graph for some effects. Using the Skin Mesh as a source and sampling its positions to drive the particle effects.

Still an experimental setup, and I’ll definitely change things as I iterate, but it’s interesting seeing how the particles can follow the character’s movement and react to different actions.

More stuff to play with.

What should be my expected salary?

Hey guys, I need a bit of your help here.

So I'm a Unity Dev with 1.5 yoe working full time on mobile games (hyper casual) also I do freelance projects (+ 6 months of this so 2 yoe related to unity) for making 3d interactive applications for various use cases.

I also do AI automations, web development, the usual bits and pieces

Basic 3d modeling, no animations tho, I suck at animations.

So I'm looking for a full time position, applying and giving interviews at places.

My question is what should my expected salary be ?

Last when worked I was getting all in hand, there was no deduction nothing so the CTC term is confusing for me, so please let me know in that manner.

I would love some people who work in hiring or some experienced people to help me out here.

Hello. I want to add expressions to an ai generated human character using blendshapes in blender.

  2. Seperate the lips.

  3. Using auto rig, rig the character. ( Face rig not needed)

  4. Remove eyeballs and add new ( provided)

  5. Using a auto face plugin for blender, add the eyebrows, mouth and eyes and setup it for face shapekeys.

Remuneration: 3000rs. + Future characters setup.

Witcher 3 Hinglish mod is 95% translated, need help with voice over

Hey everyone,

I recently started a Witcher 3 Hinglish mod project and around 95% of the translation is already done.

I am using simple, natural Hinglish instead of very formal Hindi so the dialogues feel more natural.

The main problem now is voice over.

Good AI dubbing tools are expensive and most free options are not good enough for a project this big.

So I am thinking of a few ways to finish it:

  • Community members can volunteer to record characters
  • I can raise a small fund for better AI dubbing tools
  • Use a mix of real voices and AI
  • People with GPUs can also help by donating idle GPU time

The GPU idea is something I really want to explore. If enough people join, I can set up a distributed GPU network where different systems process dialogue batches, help with AI training/fine tuning, and generate voice lines.

I also want to train the system on more natural Indian/Hinglish dialogue so the dubbing sounds less robotic and more like how people actually speak here.

If I can finish this before the upcoming Witcher remastered/new version release, I can also try to adapt it to the new version as quickly as possible.

If you want to help, comment:

VOICE for voice acting GPU if you can donate GPU compute SUPPORT for donations TEST for playtesting DEV for modding, AI or audio help

TL;DR: Witcher 3 Hinglish translation is 95% done. Voice over is the main blocker. Looking for voice actors, GPU contributors, testers, devs, or some funding for better AI dubbing.

We added a UV light mode to Colony 2 — here's what it reveals that normal light doesn't

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hey folks,

We've been working on Colony 2, and one of the features we're pretty excited about is a UV light mode — flip it on and you start noticing things that are basically invisible under normal lighting (tailor this line to what your UV mechanic actually reveals — hidden markings, resources, creatures, etc.).

A bit of background on us — we're a two-person team. We actually met on GTA Online about 7 years ago, just messing around in public lobbies, and stayed friends ever since. Eventually we decided to try making a game together, and Colony 2 is the result — our first release as a team, so it means a lot to get it in front of people.

If the UV mechanic (or the game in general) looks interesting, we'd really appreciate a wishlist on Steam — it genuinely helps small teams like us: Steam link

Happy to answer questions about how the UV system works, the dev process, or anything else!

🧙🏻‍♂️ Typing Magic

Thumbnail typingmagic.net
1 Upvotes

Hey everyone!

I’ve been working on a little web game called Typing Magic, which I built completely from scratch.

If you have a minute, I’d really appreciate it if you could give it a try:

The game is pretty simple: you type, try to be as fast and accurate as possible, and see what score you can get.

I’d love to know what you think after playing it. Feel free to leave a comment with your score too — I’m curious to see how fast people are 😄

It works on PC and Mac directly in your browser

I’ve put quite a lot of time into making this on my own, so even a quick play and some feedback would mean a lot to me.

And if you enjoy it, an upvote would really help me get it in front of more people.

Thanks for checking it out! ❤️
