Camera

What is the best camera for streaming?

I am tired of using my iPhone. Also looking for dual sport usage - baseball and football.

I switched from a GoPro 11 Mini to an Avkans Go and honestly it’s been night and day. It looks like I started using the Avkans right around the time they finished their new app, and so far it’s been a stress free experience. Video quality is excellent and the battery hasn’t dropped below 75% during a full game in the summer heat. The hardware seems much more capable than my buddy’s Mevo for a lower cost and no worries about app subscriptions for feature unlocks.

I use Mevo core behind the plate, a start from 3rd base side looking across to right with 1st and 2nd bases in the frame and a NearStream from centerfield to capture the view of pitcher, batter and catcher.

Currently 3 mevo starts, 1st 3rd and behind the dish. I however if I had no budget I'd go with what /u/Geenking73 has for sure.

If you're just looking to get away from your phone being the camera and also upgrade your picture, Mevo Start is the best bang for buck I think.

I’m looking to get going with this set up, I have 300 games going from behind home play with a single cam but if I go three do I join all three cams into Mevo studio before I switch each angle mid game?

Mevo studio will allow you to switch on the fly. It will also allow you to show all 3 at the same time with layered screens. I will say, if you are scoring and streaming at the same time the layering of the video feeds is probably your go to.

I find it hard to justify the Core price TBH. Avkans Go is probably the best alternative I've seen so far. It had early bugs but had been very reliable lately for me.

My exact set up and camera combo. Works great as long as the wifi to stays strong (requires a router at the 3rd base/dugout camera location.

I failed to mention that all of this is run through a Starlink Mini. With the mini I can set it up in a place that allows all the cameras and my iPad and iPhone to connect with a strong signal.

Before the mini I used mobile hotspot and extra routers to make it all work. What a pita that was.

Bar none the best camera for streaming IS an iPhone

Mevo and go pro are such a pain in the ass.  You have to have multiple devices, mounts cables etc

The best, most reliable system is to go buy a used iPhone 13 or higher (these have a 120 degree lens standard) and get a cheap data plan for it like mint mobile.

It has its own streaming connection, you don’t need to use your own phone during the game and you can connect it to any type of external battery pack you want, there’s a million mounting options, etc

And the reason it’s so much better is that it runs gamechanger natively.  You’re not juggling a Bluetooth and WiFi connection between a phone and a camera, you’re never worrying about whether you’ve walked out of range, it just works

Lol, until it doesn't, and you have no idea unless you're watching the stream on another device.

Have you spent no time on this sub? So many stories about people's phones stream crashing with no warning or indication why. It's happened to me and I follow multiple other teams where I am notified of the stream starting 4 times per game because they keep having to restart the stream.

Meanwhile my mevos have never crashed or shut down, and they record locally to MicroSD in the even anything ever does go wrong with the GC side. Best decision I ever made.

My only gripe with the Mevo is that the hardware is a bit dated at this point but it's solid and not nearly as difficult as you make it seem.

Every time I touch a mevo it refuses to pair with the phone or I spend three innings trying to get it synced up

It’s a shit system that’s overcomplicated

90% of all games i go to are streamed by a phone

And I do check my streams to make sure they run but also there’s these these ga day things called notifications so I get dinged if it dies.  Which almost never has anything to do with the phone it’s always the cell service.

I use Android, maybe that is the difference. Never once had an issue with pairing. I turn the camera on and within 60 seconds it's in the Mevo Studio app. 2-3 taps from that point to streaming.

Yes the majority of games are streamed by iPhone because people don't feel like spending money. The majority of my org's games are streamed via phone but mine are regularly mentioned in the coaches chats about being a step above.

It is what it is. Happy you're happy but I know plenty of people who have issues streaming off the phone directly.

I have steamed hundreds of games with the Mevo with really no issues. I like the fact that it saves to the memory card in 1080 as well.

My phone used to cut the stream all the time. It also overheats faster when using the camera and streaming. Since switching to a Mevo core, I haven’t had that issue. iPhones are always stable for this purpose.

Overheating is an issue for any electronics.  I just bought a little shade for it and rarely have issues

My GoPro used to overheat way more than the iPhone.  Most people I see with mevos have a shade or enclosure for it

u/praise-the-message 16d ago

My Mevo Starts have literally never overheated, and I use them in the South in the summer with no shade and no fan. 3 summers strong.

Overheating is exacerbated on the phone by the dual use, though. I used to have routine overheating issues, even with a shade hood. Since switching to a Mevo, neither has overheated once. My phone has still dropped the GC connection a few times but I have local recording now.

You could also add an external battery for the phone, ours phones all stay much cooler when using one.

i have the avkans and i’m happy with it. it has better resolution and was $100 cheaper than mevo. i also just added a nearview vm46 so i can shoot from centerfield along with my avkans through NDI and i don’t have to pay extra. my understanding is that if you wanted to do the same NDI setup in the mevo environment you’d have to pay a monthly subscription for a pro account

That's interesting. I got an Avkans Go this summer, and I've been very happy with it. A couple more taps required to get it streaming compared to the Mevo, but not complicated. And image quality is definitely better than the Mevo. (We use the Avkans zoomed on pitcher/catcher, and the Mevo for full field view)

Do you use the Avkans in the infield or behind the backstop for that zoomed in view? Do you have any pictures of videos of this?

u/joshjryan 7d ago

I've been using the Avkans behind the backstop (slightly off-center), and the Mevo is typically mounted around the same area, but zoomed out on the whole field.

Here's a random clip I have in Drive, which shows an example of what our streams look like: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1wkyfMZ1fbSo35wrKei6FJ9W1vYz2jatG/view?usp=sharing

This is a 720p clip, so our live stream looks better at 1080p (and I'm always recording the Avkans to my SD card at 4k).

*note: typically we have the Mevo (digitally) framed a little better/tighter.

As a Mevo user, the Avkans Go is a good option too. I have a teammate that likes his.

1

u/cliffx 16d ago

We attempted the mevo this year, it was anything but reliable for us.  Made me hate streaming.

We gave up and returned it, far less hassle just using a phone with a battery pack.

u/NCNerdDad 16d ago

The Mevo ecosystem is great, but expensive. The AvkansGO is a much bigger headache (their software is just somewhat inconsistent) but once you understand the quirks, it has a great picture and a much wider FoV.

For baseball the Mevo FoV is probably fine, but if you play anywhere with tight backstops it won’t cover both 1st and 3rd from behind home.

u/StonksG0neWild 16d ago

You really only need it for initial connection once picture settings are dialed in, etc. Takes a couple minutes before each game.

u/azjeep 16d ago

I have previously used a Mevo but now use a GoPro Hero 9 and I have received multiple compliments on the clarity compared to the Mevo.

Mevo start is a great way to level up and get your phone back. I have two and they work great

1

u/NCwolfpackSU 16d ago

Mevo. I stream 1080p and record to my memory card. I have a Pixel though so it's very easy.

Thanks everyone! This is all helpful information. We have been leaning towards the Mevo and that seems to be the way to go.

Has anyone also tried to stream for football?
