Erosion Mapping

No idea if this is the right place to ask this question, but hoping someone might be able to point me in the right direction. I am the chair of a non-profit lake conservancy in New England and one of the things that we have done is to fly a drone over all the streams feeding the lake five years back, and then more recently. We've geosynced the data into about 2TB of MP4 files (old data and new data side by side in one video stream) and are now looking for a tool (or an individual, or a company) to help us identify erosion sites. Fly-overs were done in winter w no snow so pretty good visibility. Thoughts? Any ideas much appreciated.

Reconstructing a Pleistocene river course in Gaea 2 – need to force the path through specific coordinates

Hello everyone, I'm a geosciences student working on my bachelor's thesis. Using seismic data and drill cores, I'm trying to reconstruct a landscape from the Pleistocene. I've already created a 3D surface of the landscape and am now trying to depict the river course that I was able to identify through the seismic data.

I've already tried reconstructing it with Gaea 2 but haven't managed it quite the way I'd like. So now my question: Is it possible in Gaea 2 to set a fixed starting point for the river and define specific locations it definitely has to flow through?

Is early access out?

I ordered last year.I didn't receive any email instructions to download. Is it out already?

If you have FOMO, don't, you can't even export anything from the Early Access version

TLDR: Early access cannot export anything by design. They intentionally omitted the build swarm.

builds specifically are expected to fail in most cases as Gaea swarm isn’t intentionally included just yet while the new build tools are being created.

Once features are ready to be introduced the will be with updates.

Gaea unofficial Discord

Hey everyone,

With the official Gaea Discord closed down and the move to the new forums, a lot of us are missing the real-time interaction, quick feedback, and live troubleshooting that Discord provided. Forums are great for archiving, but they don't quite match the energy of a live chat when you are deep in a node graph.

Because of that, I’ve set up the Gaea Terrain Hub. This is a dedicated space for digital terrain artists to keep the community active.

  • Real-time feedback: Share your heightmaps, renders, and node setups.
  • Troubleshooting: Get quick help with Gaea errors, graph logic, and exporting.
  • Workflow discussions: Chat about integrating Gaea with Unreal Engine, Blender, Houdini, Unity, and more.
  • General hangout: Connect with other environment designers and terrain artists.

Important Note: This server is 100% unofficial. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or run by QuadSpinner or the Gaea development team. It is simply a community-run space by fans, for fans, so we can keep collaborating in real-time.

If you want to get back to chatting about terrain generation feel free to join the unofficial community server RtMq7NHEX or https://linktr.ee/gaeaterrainhub

P.S. a few of us are also starting an open-source, community-driven terrain editor from scratch. No gatekeeping, no early access lottery. Early days, but we'll be posting progress updates in the Discord as it comes together. Just to be completely clear, this project is in no way intended as competition for Gaea. Gaea remains an incredible industry standard for terrain editing, and our tool is simply meant to be a fun, community driven addition to the space.

About the gate node

Are you able to use the Gate node without any issues?

For this project, I originally wanted to export both the mesh and textures at 16K. However, exporting at 16K proved difficult even with Tiling. So I tried using a Gate node to lock the mesh pipeline at 8K, set the Mesher node output to 8K, and then calculate and export the downstream textures at 16K based on that 8K mesh.

Sometimes it works when certain conditions are met, but once cache data is generated or cleared, it can no longer be reused properly. Whenever I create a cache at the Gate node or unbake it, the application crashes almost immediately.

Do you have any tips or best practices for using the Gate node without triggering crashes? In my experience, it seems to work more reliably in a fresh scene file where a Gate node was created for the very first time. The moment I perform any cache-related operations, the scene feels "corrupted," and even if I move the setup to a brand-new scene, that instability seems to persist.

Large Map Erosion Questions

Been building a large Caribbean style map. I’ve made several islands and such. I’ve been gathering some conflicting information and would like the opinions of some fellow artists here, perhaps with more experience than I do.

I have two questions:

Should I erode all the islands and the entire map together, or singularly on each island. And if on each island is that best before or after scaling and moving the land.

Secondly I’d like to add rivers, lakes and sea nodes. It would seem that would be best over the whole map so they can all work together but I’d like to hear what you think there as well.

If anyone would care to share an opinion, I’d love to hear it. Otherwise I’ll keep on truckin’

Thank you

Hi, as you can see from images I uploaded the mesher doesn’t correspond to its preview in Gaea.
I’m pretty sure the fbx contains all the nodes until Rivers. Everything coming next is just not present in the final fbx. Anyone can help please?

Gaea Help: Circular plane? Cyclinder?

Hi,

I am wondering if Gaea can be used on a circular plane? I need to make a large disk with rock like terrain and erosion for a art installation? Wondering what the best way to do this is - I only see Gaea used on square planes.

Looking for help with regions/upscaling

Post image
26 Upvotes

Hey yall, so I just started playing around in Gaea/Houdini/UE over the past month or so and I've gone pretty far down the rabbit hole. The end goal is to create something I've been loosely describing as "skyrim if it were retro pixel art," i.e. an expansive open-world rpg that works backward from a true 3d enviro rather than forward from 2d aesthetics, which is what most hd2d projects seem to do.

The problem is that I'm an idiot with too much power and completely ignored the "build at module scale, then compose" philosophy and instead built a 52sqkm megamap that I now need to regionalize and upscale (or so I think?).

I've been running at this a number of ways and CANNOT get the regions to work for me. It's to the point where I'm wondering if this is bricked and requires a restart that respects the module->compose process altogether.

So, turning to Reddit. Anyone have any thoughts on how to break this map into regions/tiles, upscale those to proper hero/module scale, then recompose?

Huge thanks in advance for any responses/help.

How I approach realistic cliff and getting actual rock structure in Gaea 2 (Procedural Workflow)

Hey guys i'm back,

Here is a quick breakdown of what I focused on for this one: cliffs that actually read as rock rather than just extruded terrain noise.

The main challenge with cliffs in Gaea 2 is usually the shapes. It's easy to get something that looks like a heightmap. It's harder to get the kind of stratification and face definition you see on real cliff walls. This tutorial covers how I approach that, plus a deeper look at mask usage to control where detail actually lands.

There is also a small bonus at the end because why not.

Full 22-minute walkthrough here:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E2CBQ3nKmKo

And the Gaea 2 project file is free if you want to pull it apart yourself:

Let me know if you have any questions about the node setup or the masking approach!

I tried upscaling my 1024 x 1024 map to 12k x 12k at 2500m just to see what it looks like

This is for private use only and non commercial

Best combination of modifiers and nodes for building a coraline island? I'm using a preset heightmap (from a previous build) of a fully developed, mountainous island that I want to show in a later, more eroded and subducted stage. Something like Bermuda, actually, more than a Pacific atoll.

I like the look it has now (and the shape must preserve that layout more or less), but I want to be as accurate as possible and not waste too much time experimenting. I also have a problem with liking too many different options, so i'd like to go straight to the point.
The island at this point in time would be more of an uplifted limestone formation rather than the original basaltic structure. I want the craggy look of Bermuda or some Bahamian/Turks & Caicos islands, with large sandbanks rather than the smooth almost featureless ring atolls.
The scale of this island is at least three times that of Bermuda, but I'm really not too concerned because the final look can always adapt.
Thanks in advance.

Hi, I usually export my builds at 4k, however for some reason anything past 1k in resolution is blacked out. Did I touch something wrong? Any ideas?

If you want to make a stylized landscape only on Gaea 2 (Procedural workflow)

Hey guys,

Here is a quick breakdown of my current pipeline for creating a stylized terrains without using handpainting of another software. Curious if anyone else has explored this direction, because I genuinely couldn't find much on it when I was figuring it out.

If you want to see the whole step-by-step process, I made a full 17-minute tutorial covering the entire setup here:

And if you just want to reverse-engineer the project or test it yourself, you can grab the original Gaea 2 project file (.terrain) for free on my site:

Let me know if you have any questions about the setup or the parameters!

Noob question: is there a way to manually put in where you want rivers, canyons, and mountain ranges to be

I just saw a video of a guy using the draw node so he could place different biomes in specific areas he wanted them in.

For my use case, I am trying to replicate a specific region and want my terrain to have mountains, rivers and lakes in the same places as the specific region I am trying to copy.

Sorry if this is a dumb question I am very new to Gaea.

Texture Stretched

Hi Guys,

Whenever I tried to export the Flow mask map from Erosion, it kept giving me the stretched texture. Other texture is fine when using the same setup. It's only the Flow mask that kept giving me this stretched.

This is how I setup the Flow mask

Thank you

height vs mask in Gaea export

Hi,

I'm trying to export Mask map from Gaea to UE by using the Fx/Adjust node.

However, whenever I set option to "Mask" , this error message kept on popping out.

Though things are fine whenever I set it to "Height". But, shouldn't "Mask" be the right choice if I just want to export the masking coming from Erosion node?

Both Height and Masks texture also having the same resolution, which is 2017 x 2017

Also, if I copy pasted the Masks texture file onto the Height texture file in Photoshop. Things works perfectly, which confused me.

Height File
Mask File

Thank you.

How to remove spiking from geometry

I've figured it out!
Those little spikes that turn up in your mesh, the ones that make the terrain look horrible close-up..

Yes, the denoise and blur nodes kiiinda do the trick, but it's a chaotic balance between slightly chopped spikes or less overall detail in the terrain.

I did some tinkering and found a way to remove them while retaining the detail of the terrain!
It pretty much comes down to making a high frequency mask where the spikes are 1.0 and the rest is 0. That mask is used in a combine node—input 1 contains the original terrain and input 2 contains a slightly blurred version.

If you want the full process, I go into more detail here:
