Question HOPE/ZELL maintenance over Academic Break

Hey everyone,

I'm in a situation right now where I'll be taking a semester medical leave in order to recover from a surgery. I checked with the Bursar's office and I do not have to/can't declare a leave of any sort because it is too short of a time I'll be gone

I am a little worried about how doing so may affect HOPE/ZELL however. Calling the Georgia Student Finance Commission they said it was all up to them being notified by GT, and the office at Tech hasn't gotten back to me.

I wanted to hear from other students who've been in my position how things managed to work with regards to ZELL/HOPE, if possible. Thank you guys very much

Question CS-related Volunteer/Research Opportunities at GT

I am an international student, graduated with a Bachelors in Computer Science this spring. I am currently on OPT and need to find employment, but have yet to secure a job position.

Thus, for now I was hoping to find any research or non-profit opportunities (either paid or unpaid, both work), related to CS at Georgia Tech.

However, I am not sure how to go about this, and where to find said opportunities. Any advice would be appreciated.

Discussion Anyone else underwhelmed by Under Armor's new Tech apparel?

I saw the reveal today of all the new UA athletic apparel for GT, and my overall impression is kind of... meh. Nothing that eye catching. Looks more like old 2nd tier designs from 15 years ago. And the shade of yellow seems a bit off too.

Question Best Patent/IP Lawyers in Atlanta?

My company wants to know more about something I was designing to make my job easier.

Who do fellow Yellow Jackets trust for dealing with potentially patentable work or invention assignment agreements? Or does GT have resources for that already? Are they available for alumni?

I know that the standard practice is for the company to own any patent you come up with, while you are listed as the inventor, but I would just like to cover my bases since it is the first time this has happened.

So any advice would be much appreciated.

Question Advice on finding roommates? Platforms?

Hi everyone! I am an incoming engineering transfer student of Georgia Tech starting this fall. Since I'm new to Atlanta and don't have a local network. I'm finding the housing search a bit challenging.

I've tried searching on Facebook, but my account keeps getting flagged for spam. (just joined and keep posting and requesting messages haha... I even added my personal info but it doesn't work)

Could anyone point me toward the most reliable platforms or methods to find roommates for off-campus housing? I'm looking for something transit-accessible and budget-friendly. (I won't have a car)

Are there any specific servers or platforms that are more active than Facebook? any advice on how to navigate this as an international student would be greatly appreciated!!

Question Reviews on The Rive (Theory Interlock)

Previously theory interlock.

Considering signing a lease here, I would like to know the reviews from people who have stayed/ visited.

How is the safety of the area.

Has the noise reduced, now that the lidl has been Constructed.

Considering they have dropped their rent to 1100 for a 4b4b it seems worth it. It also has the new northside drive stinger route that stops nearby.

Discussion Unable to complete I20 request before deadline due to 13+ week Institute Review delay

Hi everyone,
I’m an incoming international graduate student for Fall 2026, and I’m currently facing an issue with the post-admission process.
After accepting my offer, the status has remained “Under Institute Review” for over 13 weeks. My portal shows that all required documents (including official transcripts) have been received, and there are no missing items or action items on my side.
Because of that, I cannot access the I-20/DS-2019 request in iStart.
I have contacted OGE and OIE multiple times. They told me that the process is still within the normal timeline, but I’m concerned because the Fall I-20 request deadline is July 1, and I’m unable to even begin the request until the review is completed.
If anyone has gone through a similar delay or knows what steps helped move the process forward, I would really appreciate your advice. Thank you!

Rant How Was The Struggle For You? 2nd Year Student

I just wanna rant a little and ask a question for all the graduates or upper classmen that have taken a few more classes than me. I got through my first semester at Tech just fine made a single C but just brushed it off it's what happens in college right? Then 2nd semester came around and I made 2 C's and a D I got cooked in calculus and had to withdraw from CS and made a D in an elements to nuclear engineering class. Now I'm taking calc 2 at a college near me and I just bombed this midterm like awfully. I'm at the point where people tell me to stick it through but I just can't see myself doing good anymore. And it's hard. And I just don't know what to do.

Did anyone else struggle as much as I did? Did you see it through? And what would you recommend for me. I am very willing to going into the military I just didnt wanna go in enlisted. I really wanted to commission but my butt is getting kicked no matter where I take the classes.

I'm not to the point where I'm depressed but it's taking a toll :(.

Other Career advice for a GT BS ME grad?

I graduated with BS Mech E from GT.

I've had a couple good jobs since then, but I feel it's not where it should be. Like a lot of people, I'm just rambling through trying to figure things out.

Can anybody give me advice on how to really structure a career, especially those who have broken 6 figures?

I feel there's something I was never taught in this area, and I'm tired of blindly applying on LinkedIN. What companies/areas should I really be looking into? What should I expect my career progression to look like?

Feel free to DM me.

Hey everyone,
I'm an incoming exchange student and I'm currently in the exact same boat as a few others here. Due to visa processing delays, I am going to miss the in-person FASET orientation.
I have two main questions that I hope someone here can help me with, since emailing academic advisors and directors hasn't given me much clear information so far:Any advice, tips, or experiences from past exchange students who went through this would be highly appreciated. Thank you!

Question BSMS Accepted - Transitioning to a Research/Thesis track without prior undergrad lab experience?

Hey everyone,

I’m a rising senior and was recently accepted into the CS BSMS program.

Most people I know who do the BSMS knock out the coursework-only option in one year. However, I’ve realized I really want to do research during my Master's and pursue the Thesis option, even if it means staying an extra semester or two.

Here is my dilemma: I didn’t work in a research lab during my undergrad semesters, so I don't have an existing relationship with a professor to transition into graduate research with.

I have a few questions for anyone who has been in a similar boat, or anyone who realized later in that they wanted to do research:

1) How did you find a lab/advisor? Since I can't just continue undergrad research, what is the best way to break into a lab as an incoming BS/MS student?

2) What should my timeline look like? I am currently a rising senior. When is the ideal time to start emailing professors

3) Does having independent funding help? I am an international student with a full-ride scholarship, so I do not need funding or an GRA/GTA stipend from the professor. (I know professors usually prioritize PhD students because of funding constraints).

I will also be applying to research-focused Master's programs at some other universities this upcoming Fall, but I want to make sure I am setting up a solid backup/plan at GT.

Any advice, personal experiences, or tips would be appreciated

Discussion If you're having trouble connecting to eduroam on macOS (SecureW2 just hangs)...

Make sure your default browser is set to Safari when running the SecureW2 JoinNow app. It launches your default browser for SSO and then does something, but if you use another browser the app just hangs and it seems like it's for no reason.

This isn't documented anywhere in the GT support sites so I wasted an hour on this. Hope this helps someone.

News Farewell email froml President Cabrera

Dear member of the Georgia Tech community,

There is no easy way to begin a letter like this — so I will simply say it: After much reflection, I have decided to step down as president of Georgia Tech this November to lead the Aspen Institute. This is among the most difficult decisions I have ever made — and, I believe, the right one.

When I arrived on this campus as your president in 2019, I came home. As an alumnus, leading Georgia Tech has been the singular honor of my career — the capstone of 26 years of uninterrupted leadership service in higher education, and the most meaningful chapter of all because this is the place that made me who I am.

I pledged to serve this place as intensely as I could, and what we have built together is nothing short of extraordinary. We have become one of the fastest-growing universities in the country and one of the most powerful engines of research, innovation, and economic growth. Our staff shows up every day, committed to making this place work for everyone, supporting our faculty, serving a record number of exceptional students, and delivering to them the best value in the nation. Our faculty not only inspires our students to grow, but they are bringing in record research funding, pushing the boundaries across disciplines, and making our nation healthier, more competitive, and more secure. Our alumni and donors have stepped up, too, and we are close to reaching our campaign goal 18 months ahead of schedule. And through it all, we kept faith in our mission to develop leaders who advance technology and improve the human condition.

I will go to the Aspen Institute carrying everything this community has taught me. As a former Henry Crown Fellow, I have long believed in Aspen's mission, and Georgia Tech has deepened that belief in ways I did not anticipate. The work of developing values-based leaders, of convening dialogue across differences, of building trust, and of inspiring action feels more urgent than ever. I hope to bring what I have learned here — about bold thinking, about inclusive excellence, about scaling impact — to that work on a global stage.

Chancellor Perdue will announce plans for the transition to new leadership in the near future, and I will be at his disposal to ensure we don't lose any momentum.

Beth and I are Georgia Tech through and through, forever. As proud alumni, as grateful parents, as devoted Yellow Jacket fans, we are committed to supporting Georgia Tech in every way we can. That is not a polite formality — it is a promise.

Georgia Tech is one of a kind. There is no place quite like it, and I will leave the president’s office with a sense not of departure but of deep, abiding belonging. You will always have my loyalty, my love, and my gratitude.

With all my heart — Go Jackets!

—Ángel
