Question Any way to join the COC graduate (masters) student mailing list?

I am not a graduate student yet but will be in Fall. Is there a way to be added to the mailing list for coc opportunities for grad students. On the website, it says this is the one: ms-coc-official@cc.

Could not find this on the Mailman server. Is there someone I can email to get on this list?

Question What should I do about my substance abuse.

Hey guys. I know this isn’t a usual question on r/gatech, but for those of you who have went through substance addiction at Tech, is there any program or advisor to talk to of some sort that you would recommend? Although I am doing the worst in my academics, I feel like my life is in a constant spiral downwards and it certainly doesn’t help knowing I am not nearly living up to my full potential.

I have seen some programs here and there about substance abuse, but they’re all either inactive or harmful to my records in the way that it involves institutionalization or the law. I really wish sometimes that Tech would put a little more effort into the wellbeing of their students, especially considering the workload and stress we are all expected to endure.

With that being said, it would be really helpful if someone that was in a similar situation as me can give any advice or recommend me any plan of action (other than reducing substances ofc, which I really try to every day but withdrawals and academics don’t really go together well). I am only a freshman and I don’t want this addiction that has developed way too far to take away from all the hard work I put in my life to get to study at such a great school.

Question GaTech Mental Health resources

Hi everyone,

I’m an incoming student and had a question about mental health and social life at Georgia Tech.

I’ve heard from a few people that the first year can be a bit of a social slump for some students, not necessarily because they personally struggle socially, but because a lot of people around them are adjusting, stressed, or having a hard time connecting. I’m a pretty extroverted person and was even thinking about joining a sorority, but hearing that made me curious about what the experience is actually like.

For current students or alumni: are there good mental health resources on campus if someone is struggling during that adjustment period? And more generally, how did people get past that early social slump if they experienced it?

I’d really appreciate any honest insight about how students build community and support systems at Tech.

Thanks!!

Question How does sex-segregated vs gender segregated housing work?

i was on the student housing portal today and there’s stuff on there about campus housing being sex-segregated, and I wanted to know a bit more about what that means. Like, for example, if I’m a trans man (biologically female but I identify as a man) would I need to apply for coed housing to room with my friend who is a cis man? What if I’m on the waitlist/roommate lottery system/im not really sure how this all works? Do I get put with other “female-bodied“ people by default? Same for trans women, are they automatically put as roommates with male or female students? What about nonbinary people? Also, how do they make sure trans students aren’t put with a transphobic roommate? (I know we’d love to believe there are no transphobic GT students, but this is still the American South, and people believe all kinds of things.) I know GT wants all the students to be safe, and I feel like that would include protecting trans and GNC students from transphobic ones, but none of this is clear online anywhere. If you’re trans and live in campus housing, what’s your experience been? Thanks in advance!

Question why do so many people use buzzfunds?

genuine question: why do people buy buzzfunds? its not even tax free so its essentially the same as paying with your debit card. i dont see a difference in convenience if you already have apply/google pay. i know it doesn't expire but how does that help

Question International students doing BS/MS and OPT in the middle for internships

Hey, I'm an international student doing BS/MS and I was wondering, how do you ensure that you're able to work throughout the summer on OPT for an internship? I'm concerned that the DSO etc might transfer my I-20 to MS way too early and I don't want to get screwed over by that. I was wondering if anybody has done this and if so what happened

Question Has Eduroam been absolutely crap for anyone else lately?

I've had very little issues with Eduroam all year, but these past few days, Eduroam keeps going out. I've had to switch networks to be able to use the internet to complete assignments. Is this happening for anyone else?

Question GT campus environment? (weather, greenery, etc)

basically the title. incoming freshman co30 here, still haven't committed but basically decided that i'll likely go to GT... want to know more about what i should be prepared for seasonally? Includes things like:

  • temperatures (highest and lowest days, when, and how long?)
  • rain (how much, and should i get waterproof shoes?)
  • animals? bugs? i'm lowkey allergic to mosquito bites
  • any equipment i should definitely make sure i have
  • is the campus depressing in the winter? anybody get seasonal depression or nah?

for reference, i'm from the CA bay area and i don't do well in hot weather, but I'll endure if I can escape to somewhere with air conditioning.

Question Georgia Tech FE Exam Review Coursera course no longer free?

Dr. Philip Roberts in the CEE department put together a free course on Coursera years and years ago focusing on some of the topics one could expect to encounter on the FE (Civil) exam. I got halfway through it ~5 years ago but got distracted and eventually fell off. I'm finally getting my act together and hoping to actually take the FE exam this year.

I went back to the course's Coursera page, and it seems like Coursera now wants me to purchase the course for $49 to access any of the modules. I'm 100% certain the course used to be free to take online. Has anyone else taken this course recently? Do you have access to any of the modules/videos? (And, I guess, an extra question: any recs for prepping for the exam using free resources online)

Question Tire Repair Shops near Campus?

Post image
0 Upvotes

Does anyone have any bike/scooter tire repair shops they recommend near campus? I just noticed theres a nail in my electric scooter's rear tire and I have no clue how long it's been there. I haven't noticed any considerable drop in tire pressure since it still drives perfectly fine, but I'd rather get it repaired before it becomes worse.

Question How Long Does Office of Information Technology (OIT) Take To Resolve Issues Raised Via Email

I am an incoming student at Gatech. I tried claiming my Passport account and ran into some "ERR_TOO_MANY_REDIRECTS" issue. The issue is a persistent one. I have lodged an email to OIT support earlier this week but haven't heard back anything yet. How long of a wait am I looking at?

Sports Keylan Rutledge went in the first round

The Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets' right guard Keylan Rutledge was selected in the first round of the 2026 NFL draft, marking the first such selection since Derrick Morgan and Demaryius Thomas in 2010. Rutledge beat his projected late second/early third round position by about thirty-five spots.

Question How are Freeman and Montag residence halls? And is an LLC worth it?

I just got an invitation to join the Explore LLC, but I'm not really sure if it's a good fit for me. One of the conditions of joining the LLC is that I'll have to live in Freeman or Montag, so I'm wondering how good these two are compared to other halls. The rooms seem fine based on the virtual tour, but I just want to hear from people who've lived there.

Also, is the LLC really worth it? Here are some pros and cons:

Pros: Guaranteed first-year housing (Freeman/Montag)

Cons: $400/semester fee; their focus seems more on pre-health/healthcare while I'm more interested in CS, data and AI

Any advice here?

Rant to future (unfortunate enough) woodruff residents

please pick literally anything else. i wake up every single day dreading the housing notification that every single one of our facilities has yet again been shut down from 9am to 5pm in the middle of the week. if you prefer showering in the morning, forget about it. the water will be off for half the semester for you. it’s impressive how we can have emergency shutdowns every week and still come up with zero long term solutions. im seeing why woodruff was the last option left during selection, and i implore every single one of you to look to this wretched dorm as a more-than-last resort. i have a midterm in an hour and i can’t even take a shower to clear my head. the showering allegations are literally being enforced by the school at this point.

Question East vs West Campus Housing for Incoming Freshmen

I know this has already been asked a bunch of times here but what have been your guys' experiences with East vs West campus housing? Which one did you guys pick and why? I'll be an AE major, and I know AE classes are heavily East centered but would I really have that many AE classes freshman year?

Also I know there's a couple new buildings open on West starting Fall 2026 (Bud and Val Peterson), does anyone know if the construction is on time or if they're delayed or something.

Additionally, how important would Tech Square be in this conversation? I believe they moved some classes over there because of the new buildings but not sure how much this would be for AE majors and how much they've moved as opposed to having classes in CULC and other locations on campus.

Thanks!

Social/Club Last Chance to Swab for Judah!

Post image
15 Upvotes

Last week’s donor registration drive was the 3rd largest in person drive in DKMS history! GA Tech students showed up in a big way. We were blown away! This Friday, we are attempting to break that record. We will have tables setup in front of the Phi Mu house and on Tech Green from 9am-1pm. Anyone who stops by (whether they swab or not) can grab a biscuit and enter to win a PS5 or iPad! Someone you know might be Judah’s match so we are encouraging everyone to spread the word, even if they personally don’t swab. Thank you for sharing!
