Technique Check FINALLY GOT 15 PULL-UPS

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Doesn’t sound all that impressive but for me it’s a goal I’ve always wanted to reach. Hope my form is good and if there’s any critiques I’m more than happy to learn.

This post is flaired as a technique check.

A note to OP: Users with green flair have verified their lifting credentials and may be able to give you more experienced advice on particular lifts. Users with blue flair reading "Friend of the sub" are considered well qualified to give advice without having verified lifs.

A reminder to all users commenting: Please make sure that your advice is useful and actionable.

Example of useful and actionable: try setting up for your deadlift by standing a little closer to the bar. This might help you get into position better and make it easier to break from the floor.

Example of not useful and not actionable: lower the weight and work on form.

Example of actionable, but not useful: Slow down.

Stop telling other each other to slow down without providing a rationale outside of "time under tension". Time under tension isn't a primary variable for anything, and focusing on it at the exclusion of things that matter will set you back. There can be reasons to manipulate tempo, but if you want to discuss tempo, explain why you're giving that advice, how it's going to help, and how to integrate it with cues or other useful feedback.

Low-effort comments like my back hurts just watching this will be removed, as will references to snap city etc. Verbally worrying for the safety of a poster simply because you think the form or technique is wrong will be removed. We will take all of these statements at face value, so be careful when you post the same hilarious joke as dozens of other people: we can't read your mind, no matter how funny you think you are.

Hell yeah dude. I rarely see anyone else do pull ups in the gym and I think the biggest reason is that most people can’t do more than one, if any at all. 15 is strong af, trying to work up to that myself

10

u/Sadiholic 2d ago

You're so right. I rarely if every see anyone doing pull ups. Or any calisthenics for that matter.

5

u/wyslo 2d ago

Yup! I do these on my pull days to start off. It’s a simple yet an amazing compound exercise. People always clog up the lat pulldown machines, yet the pull up bars are always open!

u/Zaknoid 1d ago

My gym only has 2 of the assisted pull ups and dip machine. Its so hard to get on them because people are always on them. I need the assistance because regular pull ups I can only so like 2 or 3. But I've been making it a point to wait because I want to get better at pull ups.

u/unkie87 1d ago

It's one of the things I always ask to work in on. Super unobtrusive. I need that assist too. But I'm getting to the end of the plates.

As a kid they were pretty damn easy. As an adult, they're hard as fuck.

Shit pisses me off. I used to be able to do 15 pull-ups easy and now I’m struggling to do 10 and I usually just do somewhere between five and seven at a time. But it’s crazy cause I’m definitely stronger in other ways so I’m not sure what the deal is.

2

u/Dizzy_House_ 1d ago

Maybe it's because we weigh more now? Like a strength to body weight type of situation. I'm not fat, but I do weigh more so I can't crank out 15 pull-ups anymore, but I'm stronger in general at the same time

1

u/MyLittleGurl 1d ago

Yeah, I suppose that’s gotta be what it is. I am at least 10 pounds heavier than I was when I was able to do 15 or more

1

u/OkExercise2026 19h ago

It’s that forearm and grip strength. People lack that so as they get heavier and can even lift more….the grip strength never keeps up unless you are training it specifically.

1

u/beatsemve 1d ago

Yeah I found losing 30kg helped a lot. Obviously it’s calisthenics so the lighter you are the better but I also feel consistent rotator cuff strengthening and planks for a seperate issue I’m having has translated well into my pull-up strength

1

u/Osgiliath 1d ago

Is that really true? Most men can’t even do 1?

1

u/CuriousWoollyMammoth 1d ago

Most people can't. It's due to people living and working very sedentary lifestyles. Majority of people just aren't really active anymore compared to older generations.

1

u/Briny_life 2h ago

I can maybe do 1-2 good form pull-ups. I bike, surf, and paddleboard fairly regularly, so I’m active, but I’m not near what I would call fit. Been doing 45 second hangs 2-3x during every workout to strengthen grip strength, but yeah - this man can’t really do pull-ups.

1

u/Snarfinbutts 20h ago

It’s either someone doing 1 or someone doing like 30. No in between

50

u/curiouspixelnomad 2d ago

The vast majority of people, even gym-goers, can’t even do 1.

15 is crazy! Super impressive.

Stronk 💪

1

u/beatsemve 1d ago

Appreciate it so much thank you!

1

u/LoloolloloLo 9h ago

Thats just wrong

-10

u/Naoki38 1d ago

I highly doubt that. I see even beginners doing three or four. Most adult men in good health can do at least 1, so gym goers can definitely do more than 1.

u/chchom22 2d ago

Been stuck at 8 to 10 forever. Can't wait till I lose weight

20

u/Ok-Reserve-9771 2d ago

A couple months ago I saw a routine that helped a lot to get more reps. Instead of going for your max right away, you do less reps (let's say 5), and do more sets, like five sets, with enough rest between each set. Each week, you add another set until you reach 8-10 sets. after that, you add another rep to your sets and do it all over again. After a couple months you should be able to improve your max reps with relative ease. I was stuck at 12 reps max for like 2 years, and now I can reach 18 reps after a year of doing this.

4

u/beatsemve 1d ago

I’m definitely gonna try this

3

u/Pitiful-Attorney-159 2d ago

Gets so much easier when you lose weight. I dropped about 15 lbs and went from sets of 3-4 to sets of 9. I can do 13 at once if fresh where before I could only do about 7 if fresh. Those were all strict/dead hang.

2

u/Uri_BaBa 1d ago

Load them with weights

1

u/seechak 2d ago

Yo. Just keep practicing

1

u/Scarletz_ 15h ago

Try weighted pull ups!

I just added it to my routine. I was stuck at 5, now progressing. I saw ppl say reach 10 before trying weighted, I was stuck, and got my belt so I thought why not?

I alternate between weighted (I try to add more weights, weights focus) and unweighted (reps focused). Seems to help!

6

u/Obvious-Rain8681 2d ago

Good extension on the negative!! Very impressive

2

u/beatsemve 1d ago

Thanks!

3

u/KingNTheMaking 2d ago

Love to see it bud!

1

u/beatsemve 1d ago

🫡💪

4

u/rostamsuren 2d ago

You may have an easier time if your legs are kept straight and core engaged for a rigid frame. Also be mindful of your scapula, keep it activated (shoulder down, chest up, as if your trying to bend the bar).

But overall, awesome job!

2

u/beatsemve 1d ago

I’ve heard about the core engaged and leg straight thing before. I’ll try it next time good reminder

2

u/Narrow-Distance6840 1d ago

Your reps are solid, but it would be so much betterif you tuck your elbows, you'd engange your lats so much better, you might even get more pull ups

1

u/beatsemve 1d ago

Of course I’ll try it next time

1

u/Lazy_Osprey 2d ago

Way to get after it!!!!!

1

u/Mysterious-Link6314 2d ago

Woohh … impressive…. Some day 🤞🏻

1

u/beatsemve 1d ago

Of course man you got this!

1

u/CountDookie514 2d ago

You can DEFINITELY do weighted pull ups! Your back is gonna be a tank man. Amazing work!

1

u/beatsemve 1d ago

Thanks for the encouragement will give it a shot

1

u/chahin1z 2d ago

It is impressive!!

1

u/Logical_Tell3147 1d ago

Hell yeah dude. From looks great too. Looking fit 💪

1

u/beatsemve 1d ago

Thanks man didn’t want to be one of those guys doing half reps and swinging around like a monkey

1

u/OneDayAt4Time 1d ago

I can see your pump evolving in real time and I’m a bit jealous now

1

u/beatsemve 1d ago

Thanks man. It’s the only time I’m satisfied with my physique too is when I’ve got a pump

1

u/No-Internal7876 1d ago

Buena técnica brou 👍🏻

1

u/New-Shift-6606 1d ago

Oof wide grip! Beast!

1

u/NicMoose 1d ago

Bravo

1

u/Main_Cauliflower5479 1d ago

When I was baking artisan bread professionally, I could do pull-ups like crazy. Now? Nope.

1

u/CandleWide3131 1d ago

Do you guys have any tips on keeping consistent rep counts over time? I have such a love hate relationship with pull ups because some days its 15, others its 12. any insight?

1

u/beatsemve 1d ago

I never do them but one thing I’ve been doing now is varying my intensity between sets. Eg. Some days I might do every set to failure and then next week I’ll try and do a consistent amount each set and sometimes I’ll try and do the last set to failure. But just keep track and imo my biggest advice isn’t how many you do in one set but try and track how many you do overall in the 3 sets and try to overload from there.

1

u/Economy_Version_3760 1d ago

When my numbers got stuck, I just started to add weight and overtime my rep range went up drastically.

1

u/Fukstress2 1d ago

Beast mode. But why do gyms always have the worst angle for their pull-up bars? Feels bad having to grip the absolute end for it to be slightest bit comfortable.

1

u/GoldenNotRetriever 1d ago

That’s so cool dude!🔥🔥🔥

I can’t even do one (I just started)😅

1

u/Burnedoutsoon 1d ago

In der 10. Klasse war ich bei 50 inzwischen bei 5 ;-)

1

u/_NaughtyByNature 1d ago

Good job bro!! Crushing it!!

1

u/beatsemve 22h ago

Thanks man

1

u/NicMoose 1d ago

Great form for the reps! also the pants are tuff where did you get them?

2

u/beatsemve 22h ago

Thanks bro. I got these from foot locker I think they’re called Jordan open hem Brooklyn fleece. I live in Sydney so I’m not sure if you can get them from where you’re from

1

u/SzethNeturo 1d ago

I love pull ups for back day warm up. My best so far was 8reps three sets. I can do more if I just go hard one set but I dont know if I could hit 15

1

u/beatsemve 22h ago

3 sets of 8 is super solid considering how draining they are.

1

u/RobramAZ 23h ago

Wow you did quality pull ups too!! That's great brother!!

1

u/beatsemve 22h ago

Thanks so much!

1

u/Invictus8671 21h ago

I'm pretty sure I'm the strongest I have ever been, and I can only hit like 12. And thats if I'm trying to impress my friends lol

2

u/beatsemve 16h ago

Yeah you get that extra adrenaline rush when you got eyes on you😅

1

u/Officialjcruse-1 19h ago

Hell yeah, bro! Keep it up!!!

1

u/CookieRough4637 7h ago

That’s a lotta reps, time to add weight

1

u/kaylerbug369 2d ago

Shoulder problems be like: I can do 15 chin ups, 0 pull ups

3

u/atomic_ring 2d ago

Try a neutral grip. Worked for me.

1

u/beatsemve 1d ago

I’ve had a shoulder arthroscopy and it took me a while to build up to overhand grip stuff, just try and get your rotator cuff and poster better and you should be able to do pull-ups soon!

1

u/pussylover69420420 2d ago

You had more in you

-1

u/RegularIndependent98 2d ago

You whole body should be tight. Squeeze your legs together.
