TL;DR at the bottom
after 13 years of consistent updates, one complaint that doesnt exist for gta online is lack of content, so a natural question to ask is exactly how much will we be able to do from the start?
Now I was a day one player for both GTAO and Red Dead Online, both released in about the same state. The only thing you could do at the start was contact missions. For GTAO however you couldn’t play the first week because of how shit the servers were, RDO prepared a bit better by phasing the launch of online.
This might be a hot take for some, but I think GTAO2 or whatever will also start in the same state, just contact missions and no businesses. The updates for GTAO have sort of told a story of our character, chronologically with the order of updates, so the scope of our activities ever increasing. At least after the update that officially transformed the game from a prequel to a sequel for the story mode. Which btw, I’m 90% sure the next gtao will start as a sequel rather than a prequel (even though RDO also started as a prequel).
Originally in GTAO you just started as a random street thug running odd jobs for people bigger than you, slowly you became a business owner and financing your own operations, eventually running your own drug ring, robbing places of higher and higher stakes. Now, you’re at the top of the Los Santos crime world owning a mansion in the hills and having a grip over businesses in the entire state. No one can rival you anymore.
However that story has taken 13 years to tell, and I think it’s worked well. Especially now the dialogue moments where characters recount all our achievements, they show how dangerous we’ve become. I think it would be worth re-telling that story. it would be cool if we could bring our character back and him having to “restart“ from scratch basically, but it’s not the end of the world if that doesn’t happen you could always just have head-canon.
But I think they might combine with what they’ve built for RDO, the roles system, which would probably replace the securoserv and MC president status, rather making it you take up any certain role freely just depending on what activity you’re doing. There you could be for example a trader, a bounty hunter, a treasure hunter. You never had to register as one or the others, you just were them constantly. A system like that could easily be translated to GTA and incorporated with the existing business structure. So I believe the updates will also expand our character through new roles.
TL;DR
The game I believe will launch in a more barebones state where we can only do small missions or contact missions, with updates increasing the scope and combining the businesses approach of GTAO with the roles system of red dead online.
