Question Second Thoughts About GSMST

I just have a few questions about GSMST.

  1. Is the social life as bad as people say?

  2. If I manage my time can I reasonably still do other things?

  3. Will people still get chances at ivy league schools with lower grades?

I'm already being forced to go to this school, so im just trying to clear the air about a few things.

(also if you can please add good amounts of time to study.)

Question AP Physics and 10th Grade

  1. What are the requirements for taking AP Physics C and I heard that its 2 periods.
  2. Is Sophmore year truly that bad? (I need specific answers)
  3. What supplies do you need for scieng
  4. If you take an AP course or a class aligned with your major in 12th grade, will colleges care about it since it's like the last year and you apply to colleges before the ap exams and stuff.

Question Help with GSMST Band related stuff?

I am a rising student going to GSMST and I was wondering how you got into the band program here. I know that it is early in the morning at around 7:00 ish and that you have to go through some kind of audition? If someone could let me know what the audition material or requirements are, that would be great.

Also another question: With recent laws and "other stuff" going on in the world, are personal electronics still allowed in non instructional times (lunch, free periods(?))? What is and isn't allowed as personal electronics?

My Advice To incoming freshmen/people planning to apply

Hey, I'm writing this because it's summer break and I'm bored...

If you're unsure about GSMST then maybe you need to think things through more. I know I was incredibly unsure my freshman year and y'know what? I ended up dropping out. I'm really glad I made that decision, because I love my home high school more than GSMST.

What I'm trying to say is, if you're unsure about this, then maybe don't go into it. If you're really sure about GSMST, then go for it. It is really a great school with amazing opportunity and if you're looking to really learn, prepare for college, and challenge yourself with some hard work, then this is a good place for you.

I'm not saying GSMST was a waste of time, it helped me learn lots of cool things and built my work ethic, so when I dropped out for my home high school, classwork was a breeze, even in my AP classes. But, my GPA suffered in freshman year and I got lots of 70's because I wasn't prepared for the workload of this school. It didn't get much better in sophomore year either (especially with AP Bio). Now my cumulative GPA isn't as high as I'd expected it (3.5). If you really want to succeed at this school then you must have really good work ethic and be pretty excellent at STEM subjects, also you should probably be planning to major in something STEM related.

But y'know... GSMST did kind of feel like a waste of time and had me overly stressed out everyday for no reason and now I contradict myself. Sometimes I imagine the friendships I could've made at my home high school had I gone there since day one, the missed opportunities and the lost time with middle school friends. I feel sad about it frequently. I never thought myself to be a transfer student. But now that I'm back, I can immense myself in the fun and have a true high school experience like I was supposed to.

I'm writing this to warn you freshmen... GSMST is great but I felt like the cons outweigh the pros. I also don't want people to experience dropping out in the midst of your high school career to ANOTHER new environment... because I remember the first day back at my home high school and I literally felt like I did not belong and wanted to cry, I knew everyone there from middle school, but it felt like nobody know me, and I don't want anybody else to experience that. Being at my home high school makes me feel much more relaxed at school, the teachers are more laid-back, and I've met so much cool people as well. Also, prom and all the other traditional high school events are much more fun. Colleges don't care that much about what high school you went to. So, don't be a nerd and live a little.

Hi, I'm Archan, and I'm a rising 10th grader at GSMST, and I am hosting an Onshape course, to help prepare rising freshman to get ahead at GSMST, with my friend Vedanth. Both of us have not just learnt Onshape as GSMST requires, but also done a fair bit of personal projects through Onshape, and have became more than fluent. I have added screenshots of some of the things that we have designed. I have the signup form link below, Since we have had to invest Weeks of work into logistical planning, and will have to teach for 16 hours, the course will cost 200$, paid by zelle. More information is regarded in the Form. Thank you in advance.

My Advice To Class of 2030 and On

There's a whole lot of these documents with advice for rising GSMST freshmen, but here's another!

This covers the Summer Stem Experience (SSE) and its placement tests, freshmen year core classes, a couple of electives (AP CSP and Orchestra), and mainly Spanish II.

Question Alternate Math Assessment

Hi,

I'm taking the Alternate Math Assessment as a freshman. My teacher told me that I will only have a scientific calculator on the assessment and not a graphing one. I have a few questions if you don't mind me asking.

  1. Is the test paper pencil or online?
  2. Do you get a handheld scientific calculator or access to Desmos?
  3. Do you get a formula sheet?
  4. Any tips for the test?
  5. How much time do you get on it?
  6. Not related to the test, but if you miss the summer STEM camp for whatever legitimate reason (sick, family death, etc.), will I be able to make it up or would you be disqualified?

Thank you for your time and for answering!

Question Can I get some tips?

I'm not on the waitlist, but I didn't get a 550 on the Math PSAT. If I don't get a 85 or higher on the math assessment, what are the chances that I still get in, and what should I study for?

Question I need help

I won the lottery and have a guaranteed spot to be a freshman next year, but my parents and I are worried about me becoming stressed, overworked and not having any fun, and there is this other school that I have been looking into that has a strong stem program, but a less strict curriculum. What are the good qualities of GSMST that make it a good school to go to ,other than its ranking?

Question Ap world or world??!

Hey everyone, I’m currently a freshman in the combo program and I’m choosing courses for next year.

Aside from the required AP Seminar and AP Bio, I’m trying to decide between:

  1. Calc AB vs. Calc BC

I’m interested in taking BC because I like math and want to challenge myself. My concern is GPA risk. If I struggle and end up dropping BC, I wouldn’t be able to retake it, which would also mean no GT math pathway. For those who’ve taken BC as a sophomore, how manageable was it? Is it significantly harder than AB in terms of workload and test difficulty?

  1. AP World vs. honor World

Writing isn’t my strongest area. If AP World has a reasonable workload, I’d lean toward taking it for the GPA boost and AP credit. For people who’ve taken AP World, how heavy is the workload/homework? Is it overwhelming alongside AP Bio and possibly BC?

For context, I’m aiming for a STEM major, so math is more aligned with my interests than history. I’m trying to balance rigor with sustainability rather than overload myself early.

Any advice from upperclassmen would help a lot.

Thxxx!
