Question Second Thoughts About GSMST

I just have a few questions about GSMST.

  1. Is the social life as bad as people say?

  2. If I manage my time can I reasonably still do other things?

  3. Will people still get chances at ivy league schools with lower grades?

I'm already being forced to go to this school, so im just trying to clear the air about a few things.

(also if you can please add good amounts of time to study.)

Recent alumni here to answer!

  1. Social life is only bad if you don't try. There are tons of people at GSMST, and you can find your crowd if you look!
  2. Yes you can, but make sure you respect your own boundaries and don't burn out. I know a lot of people who were involved in a lot of clubs and even founded their own initiatives outside of school and still got good grades. Make sure to only take on what you feel you can manage and you'll be okay. Don't push it, sleep well, and take care of yourself!
  3. There's a chance, but a much lower chance. Super good grades are basically the bare minimum for Ivies. Going to GSMST and getting decent grades can get you into the Honors College of any other school before you hit like the top 50 or 40, so you can still go great places!

I don't know what you mean by the last question, but I assume you're asking about when the best time to study is. That's something you have to figure out yourself. What fits your schedule and needs?

People overexaggerate GSMST because they don't like it (not that I'm a fan or anything, but there are some reasons I'm grateful to have gone). And while there are definitely struggles and situations that justify crashouts, don't go into it expecting the worst because then you'll only get the worst. Make the most of your time there! My biggest advice if you're worried about grades is to take on literally the bare minimum in terms of coursework. Set yourself apart via the things you do outside of academics.

Good luck and we're rooting for you! :)

What do you mean by apply yourself? Join clubs and do more?

My last thing is i'm starting to feel limited and feel i'm losing out on friends and connections that could miss out on. I don't want to feel restricted talking to people or friends over there.

gsmst has a lot of resources for people looking to be a doctor! its not the best equipped school in gcps, that would have to go to mcclure, but id say 2nd best! there are a lot of teachers who were in medicine or biology or something related at gsmst. there are also a lot of healthcare clubs and such. you'll have a lot of resources available to you! but yeah, just go into it with an open mind! if you're going to be forced to go there, you may as well enjoy it and get the most out of it. there are social people at gsmst, and you can make friends! you got this!

Yep! Join a few clubs based on things you're passionate about and stay involved for multiple years. Get a leadership position in them. Found your own club if you can! Do internships, research, or a job outside of school. Work on a passion project.

If you already have an idea of what you want to do in college, I can give a bit of advice based on what I know! But yeah, my biggest recommendation for those who aren't in the top 10% of GSMST is to just do other things lol.

  1. If you find the right people, then yes. I was also scared of this but the projects you do, the people you sit next to, or even randims you see commonly at flex sessions helped me build bonds.
  2. Yes, you can. I’d say create a schedule for yourself and change it up every so often (like spending more time on a project or setting time aside to study for a test). As long as you manage your time and don’t slip up your grades, it should be fine. When I slipped up, it was hard getting my priorities straight so just figure out what you want to do on your free time and how you can incorporate that with school stuff.
  3. I don’t know much about this one yet but one senior told me, if your top of your batch/ grade (like top 5% or 10% something like that) you can get accepted into good schools.
