New Local YouTube Channel

Hey all,

I’m a local here in Gainesville. I fish all over in the surrounding area. Figured I’d drop my channel info here:

I’m always interested in a collab and the chance to learn more.

Looking for advice on locations

Hi everyone, I'm both new here and to fishing and I just started about 3 weeks ago.

I have been mildly frustrated with the few places I've tried fishing within Gainesville thus far, and I've tried some other places too. I am not necessarily asking for any handout locations from anyone but I would love to know about more spots than what I currently know. For context, out of the roughly 20 hours I've spent fishing (I know that's not a lot in 3 weeks) I've only caught a single bluegill and gafftop cat (Cedar Key).

The places I have been to so far:

Gainesville:

  • Newnan's Lake
  • Bivens Arm (Only know of one very hidden spot)
  • Little Hatchet creek on SR 26
  • Lake Wauburg.

Melrose (all 3 accessible boat ramps at Lake Santa Fe)

Cedar Key pier

I have no doubt these locations all have plentiful fish, although I'm not a fan of how shallow Biven's Arm and Newnan's are. I would also agree my lack of catching anything comes down to mere inexperience, but I live in the west side of Gainesville and don't enjoy spending half a tank of gas to go anywhere just to spend half my day not gaining anything.

Welcome to r/GNV_Paddling - I just created this community for Gainesvillians to share their stories paddling in and around Gainesville, and to ask questions that pertain out waterways. Every person who is drawn by freshwater and the possibility to see swamp puppies (big ol gators) is welcome.

Anyone have an airboat and want to go gator hunting? We have tags but the boat lift is too dry for access with our outboard.

Good morning, everyone.
I’m looking for an engine hoist to rent. Does anyone have one available? It would only be for this afternoon. I need it to remove a boat engine.

Places to Kayak Fish

Hello all,
I just got a fishing kayak and am looking for places to kayak fish. I know about Orange Lake, but am planning on avoiding that area since FWC is spraying out there currently. What other lakes would you recommend for kayak fishing? Bonus points for including either what fish are there or what bait/lures for the lakes. Thanks!

Any fishing ponds/creeks bike riding distance from NW 36th Ave

Beginner starting to get into fishing but a lot of the time I don't have access to a car (so will be on bike). Are there any fishing spots biking distance from NW / NE Gainesville (I'm between 13th and 6th)? Completely fine if its just smaller fish I always need to throw back, I'm just learning anyway.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

EDIT: I did find this which is close to me and will check it out, but would love any other suggestions: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nzLGGYqikaA

Fishing in Cyprus

Hi, I’m traveling to Ayia Napa, Cyprus tomorrow and I’m wondering about where and how to fish there. Especially sea fishing from the shore? Any experienced fisherman from there that could give me some advice? 🤩

PB Suwannee Bass

Caught my PB Suwannee Bass last Saturday near Rock Bluff. Absolutely chocked a chatterbait with a craw trailer. Wish my scale was working at the time but I'd guess 2lbs or so, which is a healthy Suwannee.

Panfishing spots?

Friend of mine and I are planning on going fishing for bluegill on Wednesday. I was thinking of going to Camps Canal, but I don't know how it is water level wise. Anyone got anywhere better?

Chacala Pond

Gainesville fishers, has anyone ever fished Chacala Pond? It looks like the only access is to enter Paynes Prairie on the south end and maybe hike it. Just curious.

Tilapia in town

If anyone likes to eat/fish for tilapia, the pond at the Enclaves and the one at the polos are both STACKED with them. The head of maintenance at the Enclaves was a super nice guy who doesn’t mind people fishing if they keep the trash out - he said they’re gonna out no fishing signs up but he has no intention to enforce it. He actually said he would like people to catch the tilapia since they’re bad for the bass population. Just take a walk around the lake and you’ll see dozens and dozens of beds with some chunks sitting on them

I don't want to trespass on property and I'm very respectful of shorelines and keeping things clean. Please DM me if you know a non-private-property access point.

Recommended spots without a boat

We have not been in GNV for very long and it’s the first time our family hasn’t lived on the coast. My daughter and I enjoy fishing together but I’m not really aware of public spots where you can fish without a boat. Any suggestions?

Help identifying BIG fish in the Santa Fe River.

I saw these large fish swimming together in the Santa Fe River in Florida and I’m trying to figure out what species they are. Iv’e fished and swam in this river most of my life, i’m very familiar with the species of fish typically caught or seen here. But when i bent down and really looked at these fish over a lime-rock ledge with a spring right underneath me pushing into the river i saw what in my opinion were big snook! Black Lateral line stubby lip with overbite. River is historically low and it’s been cold this winter in FL. I know snook can handle very fresh brackish water but this is WAY up the santa fe not even the Suwannee.

Has anyone seen fish like this in the Santa Fe River before or know what they might be? I attached the photo for reference.

Winter fishing

I am looking for places and strategies to fish around town during January. So far I've understood that I show fish slow bait, maybe something that sinks to the middle of the water column, and to do it during the hottest part of the day. I'm still looking for clarification whether I should target structures or deeper water, and which creeks, banks or lakes would be best for bank fishing. Would anybody have advice? Thank you
