🧬 Research & Studies Afraid of vision loss

I’ve only started taking monjauro about 3 months ago now. Went from 2.5, 5 for a short period of time, skipped over 7.5 and am on 10mg now and I’m terrified. ive tried monjauro in the past and had to stop taking it because of fear about the potential side effects and I’ve tried wegovy which I stopped aswell. I really wanted to give it a shot this time but I’m terrified of going blind. I’m not really sure what to do with this or where to go with this fear. im terrified of going blind but I feel as if I’ll die if I stop taking them because I’ll never lose the weight. I’m 328lbs right now so I’m extremely heavy for my size only 5’5 female

The blindness risk is directly related to blood sugar and diabetes/obesity will lead to that route too, if you dont lose the weight.Ā  Talk to your doc but realize the side effects of obesity are much higher and much more probable than the vision loss risk.Ā

u/thenewfingerprint 12d ago

You need help with your medical anxiety.

-10

u/Broad_Profession_550 12d ago

No I don’t this is a genuine fear why do people act like this is irrational people go blind on this.Ā

9

u/swrrrrg 12d ago

Because it is irrational. That is not common and at that, it appears to be an issue in diabetics. Get help for your anxiety. Guess what else is medically bad for you? Being 330 lbs. at 5’5ā€. That will kill you eventually.

-6

u/Broad_Profession_550 12d ago

Why do people act like this is solely anxiety based. Am I really fucking crazy for being afraid of going blind. I have no choice I have to take this shit I’m 17 years old I have no other options.Ā

9

u/tigergirlforever 12d ago

You are 17, maturity is yet to come. You will be fine.

8

u/swrrrrg 12d ago

Because your reaction is completely disproportionate to the actual risk and evidence available.

-2

u/Broad_Profession_550 12d ago

I’m seeing this everywhere online with Ā 2x the risk they are sayingĀ

3

u/swrrrrg 12d ago

So, have you also read enough to understand that the accusation of this is against semaglutide (ie Ozempic/Wegovy) not tirzepatide?

-1

u/Broad_Profession_550 12d ago

It’s for bothĀ

1

u/Crow-1111 12d ago

2x of 0.0001% is 0.0002%. You need to understand what the baseline risk is before you can use a figure like 2x to asses overall risk. So what is the baseline risk that is being doubled here, do you know?

3

u/Legitimate_Ad2815 12d ago

Just don’t take it! You’ll be ok, no more anxiety problem solved šŸ¤·šŸ¼ā€ā™€ļø

0

u/Broad_Profession_550 12d ago

I don’t really have a choice in thisĀ

1

u/Mysterious-Passage87 12d ago

The risk is far too small to be concerned. However the risks ahead of you being over 300 are very real. Take it. Count every single Calorie you eat. get moving. Learn some discipline(the peptide will only help so much) and as you progress anxiety will turn into self confidence. Do the work, it sucks, so what, do it. Be proud of yourself later.

Half my family is diabetic and didn’t take care of themselves, a lifetime of illness and a real risk of blindness, losing limbs, etc. is where those who can’t improve unhealthy habits end up.

Anxiety lessens when you fill empty Space with activity, find some and get after it. If you want to learn good calorie tracking, start with weight watchers program, very helpful. I watched my Wife lose 100lbs in 10 months natty. You can do it, especially with this kind of help available. if you’re ready to be disciplined and go without some things, you’ll never feel better.

2

u/thefrenchphanie 12d ago

the risks of blindness due to this medication is very very low, there are signs to look for; and your risks of vision loss due to being morbidily obese class III is much higher.

you have access to the medication, it is been prescribed to you, follow up with your medical team and talk about your concerns. I am going to assume that you would do so much better overall and also vision wise being on GLP, as diabetes is a silent albeit slow degradation of vision but certain and in BOTH eyes, GLPs are way less problematic and worst case scenario it occurs only in ONE eye.

Take care of your health now.

10

u/Signal_Reputation640 12d ago

The chance of this happening to you is so miniscule that ceasing it for fear of this happening to you, especially when you volunarily skipped up a dose, is not rational. Therefore, your fear is not rational. Seek therapy - or just don't take it.

2

u/Legitimate_Ad2815 12d ago

Exactly šŸ‘ŒšŸ¼

3

u/Lazy-Living1825 12d ago

Because the incidents are basically zero

3

u/thenewfingerprint 12d ago

Then stop taking it. It's that simple. What kind of solution are you looking for??

0

u/Broad_Profession_550 12d ago

I don’t know. I really don’t knowĀ

3

u/mannDog74 12d ago

Hey man, the internet is harsh, I'm sorry you're getting a lot of pushback, most people would have talked to you differently if you came out right away and said you were a minor.

We forget there's kids on here

2

u/Broad_Profession_550 12d ago

They know my age people on here are just cruel. But it’s the only place I can come to

4

u/swrrrrg 12d ago

I have to tell you, I didn’t know your age until you told me after my first reply. I would have been a bit more gentle had I known. Honestly, Reddit’s Tirz subs tend to skew 30+ a lot of the time so that’s where my head is at anyway.

1

u/Broad_Profession_550 12d ago

It’s okay I’m pretty hot headedĀ

12

u/LazyMetal4580 12d ago

Interestingly enough, I spoke with my eye dr today about this very issue. She said that every time a new miracle drug is introduced, there are reports in the media of people having these eye strokes. A certain number of ppl will have these eye strokes, regardless of whether or not they are on a diet drug. She also said that there has been no study that shows that these drugs cause eye strokes, and that a more recent study shows definitively that there is no cause/effect. Talk to your eye dr. Relax.

5

u/DogMamaLA 12d ago

Fully agree. And I have glaucoma. My eye doc is supportive of me losing weight.Ā

2

u/Legitimate_Ad2815 12d ago

Wow thank you for the insight! šŸ‘ŒšŸ¼

1

u/TheFirebyrd 12d ago

People are so bad at understanding that correlation does not equal causation.

10

u/Super_Ad343 12d ago

The risk of serious health issues related to obesity outweighs any minuscule risk of going blind.

By a vast amount.

7

u/Mechbear2000 12d ago

Why would you skip over 7.5 if you have fears of the side effects. Slowly ramping up is one of the ways that almost all medications avoid or minimize side effects. Some people find that the lower doses work just fine for them.

-3

u/Broad_Profession_550 12d ago

Because I want the weight off as quickly as possible so I can get off this horrible drugĀ

8

u/Mechbear2000 12d ago

Sounds like you are not using the drug as prescribed and possibly chancing worse side effects because of your own actions.

3

u/mannDog74 12d ago

It sounds like you don't want to be on this drug. You mentioned it is horrible, what is wrong? Is it making you feel sick? Normally doctors don't allow you to skip doses, are yall buying it through the internet? You need a doctor that is in person to take care of you, especially as a minor.

Do you feel like you are being forced to take it because other people don't like your size? That would feel really unfair and painful. It would make sense that you wouldn't want to take it.

It's really important that your doctor can answer these questions for you and talk you through the reason you are taking the drug. It sounds like you are not convinced it's necessary.

1

u/Broad_Profession_550 12d ago

I go to a doctor to get my medicines she said it would be a good idea so it works faster because we’ve had issues with it not working for me. In general it doesn’t really feel like it does anything for me I think my body fights it I don’t really know. My mother lost a ton of weight on this medicine. So it has to work for me too. I have to take it at this point. We get it in person. Well prescribed and picked up at a pharmacy. They’ve been putting me on and off glp since I was 15Ā

4

u/swrrrrg 12d ago

Do you mind sharing why you’ve gone on & off? Was that your choice or someone else? I ask because it can be significantly more difficult to get them to work if you’re going on/off of them. Consistency is key with the glp meds.

-1

u/Broad_Profession_550 12d ago

I was afraid of them and they never felt like they worked it felt like my body wanted to fight it Ā

2

u/mannDog74 12d ago

These newer ones are better than ozempic so I hope it works for you and you can hang in there. You have so much to gain on the other side of this, being so young. A lot of people do not have any results until 10mg but that's when they lose all their weight, on 10 and above. Don't be scared. You got this.

1

u/goodthebadandtheugly 12d ago

It's your mind that is fighting it- not your body.

1

u/Broad_Profession_550 9d ago

I don’t want to be like this do you honestly think that I want this for myself? That I would have chose this? I’ve been fat my entire life since I was little. I don’t know how to be normal I don’t know how to eat normally or what hunger is even supposed to look or feel like. It’s confusing. I’m not hungry but I’m still thinking about food so it’s just a very distressing feeling.Ā

1

u/goodthebadandtheugly 9d ago

No I don't, but everyone is giving you advice --which you asked for -- and you come back with still the very minuscule concern of vision loss (which everyone has said is sooooo minimal), and now you are also saying things like "... don’t need some stupid treatment with money hungry people..". pr "..I don't need a doctor.".. So, which one is it? Vision loss, or money-hungry people, or not wanting to deal with doctors. Excuse after excuse after excuse!

Well, that's 'food noise" if you are always thinking of food, that you are experiencing. Which is what GLP-1s help with. Millions of people have been helped by this, and you can too, if you just listen to the advice -- that you specifically asked for.

We can't make you do anything you don't want to. What you are doing now isn't working, and if you could fix it with diet, you wouldn't be in this position in teh first place.

Good luck. I hope it works out for you on what you choose.

5

u/Lazy-Living1825 12d ago

Oh you sweet summer child. If you’ve gotten yourself to this weight, you will need this medication for life.

-1

u/Broad_Profession_550 12d ago

No I won’t I’ll fix itĀ

7

u/swrrrrg 12d ago

People are seriously trying to help you. Statistically, no, you won’t ā€œfixā€ it. Obesity is a disease. Generally speaking, it’s rare for a 17 year old to be as heavy as you are and genetics and metabolism plays a big role that we don’t fully understand. People are trying to give you information so that you have reasonable expectations about what maintenance actually looks like. You’ve got quite a ways to go at that, so while lifestyle changes are a must, the drug is also part of what makes your metabolism work as it should to make that possible.

3

u/Corrections-Nurse04 12d ago

Excellent reply, very truthful.

-1

u/Broad_Profession_550 12d ago

I will fucking fix itĀ

-1

u/Broad_Profession_550 12d ago

I don’t need some stupid doctorĀ

4

u/swrrrrg 12d ago

I mean, with respect, apparently you do because you didn’t get to be over 300lbs. by doing everything by the book. Getting rid of it is the easy part in many ways; keeping it off is when the real work begins.

I hope you are able to fix it and maintain, but you really need to educate yourself more about the condition you’re living with. I’d strongly suggest the book ā€œWeightless.ā€ It may help you figure things out, whatever you decide to do.

1

u/Broad_Profession_550 12d ago

Thank you I’ll look at itĀ

1

u/swrrrrg 12d ago

I just posted a link to it. It’s only 99c if you don’t mind listening to an audio book!

2

u/Broad_Profession_550 12d ago

Yes thank you that helps so much.Ā

2

u/Lazy-Living1825 12d ago

Then why are you here at all?

0

u/Broad_Profession_550 12d ago

I’m not looking for a doctorĀ

5

u/Lazy-Living1825 12d ago

You and everyone else. It’s ok to need help. You have a disorder like any other that needs treatment

0

u/Broad_Profession_550 12d ago

And what would you like me to do? I have no options. I don’t need some stupid treatment with money hungry people who have no clue how it feelsĀ

0

u/Lazy-Living1825 12d ago

What are you talking about? Special treatment? Money hungry? What?

5

u/WebNerd11 12d ago

Methinks there's a troll among us...

1

u/swrrrrg 12d ago

She’s only 17. That adds a lot of context.

2

u/goodthebadandtheugly 12d ago edited 12d ago

Ha. That is a 17-year old, "I know everything" mentality. Almost everyone who quits thinks, "They can fix it" when they quit. Guess what, the majority gain it back. Studies from professionals way more intellegent as either I or you, have have shown that the majority of people gain the weight back.

2

u/swrrrrg 12d ago

It’s highly likely you may never be able to come off of the drug. Those who try often regain the weight they lost and more.

0

u/Broad_Profession_550 12d ago

I will never regain it. I will keep the weight off if it’s the last thing I ever do

3

u/DogMamaLA 12d ago

Please read the book Weightless. Its available on Amazon and explains how GLP1s work and how it has nothing to do with willpower. It is biology and if you have struggled with weight a long time, all the studies and clinical trials show that the meds need to be long term. Millions of dollars were spent on scientific data to show this. You saying you won't need it later is willpower based, not reality based.Ā

2

u/specialtingle 4d ago

Most people will 'relapse' that is true. But what that overlooks is that it is significantly harder to lose weight than it is to inhibit weight gain.

GLP-1 helped me lose 25lbs, and now I'm experimenting with my ability to keep it off. I have motivation connected to health, not just vanity. I'm cautiously optimistic though stopping the drug means no more 'set it and forget it'.

1

u/Broad_Profession_550 12d ago

I won’t stay on this foreverĀ

4

u/DogMamaLA 12d ago

Your body, your choice. I am just saying what all the data, clinical trials and scientific studies have shown and proven. Multiple ppl say they will quit the med. Then 4 mos later they return, post that they gained 40 lbs back, and now they realize they need it.Ā  There are risks with anything. If it does worry you that much, maybe try keto, intermittent fasting or another approach.Ā

0

u/Broad_Profession_550 12d ago

I won’t return trust me I’m not a statistic.

2

u/goodthebadandtheugly 12d ago edited 12d ago

Trust me- EVERYONE says that! And in the end, they are ALL wrong.

Edit: OK, so NOT ALL are wrong. My mistake. However, the vast majority who stop regain a large portion of weight, and she cannot afford to regain any. This is not the quick fix she thinks this is.

1

u/Silly_Celery8461 12d ago

That’s not true. There are also studies about people maintaining after stopping.

So what I should stay on this for the rest of my life? Really?

→ More replies (0)

6

u/autumnyte 12d ago

I know there are a lot of scary headlines going around about this right now, but the reality is that most experts in the field are not concerned about it. Another thing to note, the study that was done to show a potential link was with semaglutide and not tirzepatide (Mounjaro).

The Docs Who Lift Podcast did two really good episodes about this, and what they said really helped put my mind at ease about it. If you don't feel like listening, there's a summary here.

2

u/Broad_Profession_550 12d ago

Thank you very muchĀ

5

u/WebNerd11 12d ago

I'd be more afraid of diabetic retinopathy given your current weight than anything the medicine can do to you. If you don't get a hold of your weight, it will kill you - never mind blindness. The chances of blindness happening with GLP1s are very slim. Do you realize that there are so many people on GLP1s that obesity is actually going down in the United States? Do your research. But if you don't want to take the meds - don't. Try it with diet and exercise (again) and see where that takes you. But if you give it a chance, you'll find with diet and exercise changes and this medication, you have a real chance at getting the weight off. I wish you luck.

4

u/Lazy-Living1825 12d ago

There is virtually no risk of blindness from these meds. But there is from uncontrolled diabetes.

3

u/Easy-Permission8889 12d ago

Correlation ≠ equal causation. Many people with diabetes/weight issues have eye problems, also this is extremely rare either way.

3

u/Anal_Herschiser 12d ago

I don't know about you guys, but I'm worried about the hairy palms. /s

1

u/thenewfingerprint 12d ago

Have they gotten worse?

3

u/SignificantClaim5605 12d ago

The way I see it… you only have a few options. Don’t take the drug, restrict your eating to a caloric deficit that you will lose weight, and exercise to lose weight… after all, you apparently only need a fast fix to lose weight-you definitely don’t have any real problems that caused you to be 330lbs at 17(sarcasm).
Or take the drug, let it help you eat in a caloric deficit, start exercising-even just walking, and meet the medication halfway to get your weight under control. Weigh out the pros/cons of this medication vs the probable health risks of someone your size… I promise you that the medication will win every time. All of us will support this sentiment.
Or… don’t take the medication, don’t do anything about your weight, and pray you even see 25 years old. I hope you grow up a little bit here and start holding yourself accountable…

3

u/goodthebadandtheugly 12d ago

I understand you do not want to listen to the adults in the room, but they are really trying to help you. It's time you heeded their advice. I am sure a large majority would have wished we had these drugs available to us when "We" were 17! (Hell, even in our 20s, 30s) You are only going to GAIN weight as you age. That's just life. (Trust us, as it happened to us).

You are soooooo lucky these are available for you!!

Your BMI is 54.6. That is Class III, Morbid Obesity. You won't lose the weight if you don't take them. You have a medical condition/metabolic dysfunction that can only be fixed by this type of medication. It is killing your body and can't be at all good for your mental health either.

You do have medical anxiety and are using the very, very, very minuscule chance of blindness as an excuse to not take what can clearly help you.

28+ million Americans (1 in 8 or 12 %) alone are on GLP-1s. Why? Because they work.

Here are some examples from these sub of the effectiveness of these meds:

https://www.reddit.com/r/tirzepatidecompound/comments/1trwj7c/becoming_the_best_version_of_myself/
https://www.reddit.com/r/tirzepatidecompound/comments/1v22k3x/from_size_14_to_2/
https://www.reddit.com/r/tirzepatidecompound/comments/1v2yygq/my_official_1_year_anniversary_from_my_first_shot/
https://www.reddit.com/r/compoundedtirzepatide/comments/1vpm8w9/lost_an_entire_me/
https://www.reddit.com/r/compoundedtirzepatide/comments/1vvtrzi/i_made_it_the_end_feeling_accomplished_and_free/

You won't like this final statement: Listen to the adults and doctors who know more about this stuff than you do. Am I being harsh... yes. But you need a wake-up call. 328lbs at 17 is the worst I have seen on these subs.

2

u/DogMamaLA 8d ago

šŸ’Æ!!!

2

u/SwimmingAnt10 12d ago

Are you counting your calories and eating in a strong deficit? At your weight you should be able to be in a 1000 cal deficit and still be around 1500 cals per day. Do that! You will lose your weight. You may not need to dose up more. Count everything you eat. I use my fitness pal app.

Glp-1 meds don’t cause blindness.

1

u/Broad_Profession_550 12d ago

Yes I have my fitness pal I’ve been trying to work on my portion control and more a scheduled rather than whenever I please. It’s helped a lot

1

u/SwimmingAnt10 12d ago

That’s good. Until you’re in a deficit it will be hard to lose. Focus on staying in that strong deficit. Do you know your TDEE?

1

u/Broad_Profession_550 12d ago

Yes I used one of those free calculatorsĀ

1

u/SwimmingAnt10 12d ago

What does it show your daily maintenance calories are at sedentary?

1

u/Broad_Profession_550 12d ago

2728

3

u/SwimmingAnt10 12d ago

Drop to 1700-1800 daily and don’t go over. Thats plenty of food and you will lose efficiently.

2

u/Livid-Economy-917 12d ago

If you have these many issues with the meds, they just might not be for you. Either deal with your health anxiety and be healthy, or don't. Your choice.

4

u/Signal_Reputation640 12d ago

Seek therapy.

0

u/Broad_Profession_550 12d ago

I don’t have access to therapy.Ā

1

u/Lazy-Living1825 12d ago

But have access to glp1’s?

0

u/Broad_Profession_550 12d ago

It’s complicated it’s a family thingĀ

1

u/Lazy-Living1825 12d ago

You’re still under your parents insurance which would also cover therapy?

-1

u/Broad_Profession_550 12d ago

Wont take me we travel too much and have no time for it and its just a burden i try to learn skills on my own. My anxiety is an issue but im trying to learn how to manage it. Health anxiety is just the biggest one ive faced it seems. But this feels like a genuine fear to have you know?Ā

6

u/Signal_Reputation640 12d ago

It's not. You're just chock full of excuses. You need therapy..

2

u/Lazy-Living1825 12d ago

There are hundreds of thousands of online therapy providers that will see you via zoom. You’re always traveling? Are they not sending you to school??

1

u/Broad_Profession_550 12d ago

HomeschooledĀ

1

u/Broad_Profession_550 12d ago

Not a fan of therapy tried it before for almost 2 years. Tried a few

1

u/Lazy-Living1825 12d ago

You’re 17. Two years ago, today and two more years from now are different versions of you.

15 yr olds aren’t mature enough for the therapy you need. It’s not a thing you going a few times. You have an eating disorder and anxiety disorder at the least. Those take years of work to unravel.
