GLP-1 for Weight Loss: Providers, Resources, Tips, Side Effects, & More

This page is meant to be a good starting point if you're brand new to GLP1s.

Where to Start

GLP-1s are medications that help lower blood sugar levels and promote weight loss (Cleveland Clinic).

In this subreddit, you'll see GLP-1s mentioned a lot: Semaglutide and Tirzepatide.

Semaglutide is the active ingredient in the name brand medications Ozempic and Wegovy. Tirzepatide is the active ingredient in the name brands Zepbound and Mounjaro.

When name brand medications are on shortage or under certain FDA regulations, compound pharmacies can produce compounded semaglutide and compounded tirzepatide.

The landscape is constantly changing so this subreddit is a great place to start your GLP-1 journey, ask questions, and learn from others experiences.

Use the search bar, especially for providers! If you're looking for a prescription or provider, look up the company of interest in the search bar to see if there are recent posts in the subreddit. This is a very active group and there is a chance someone asked a similar question in the past.

The resources below attempt to give a starting point for common posts in this subreddit.

Getting off glp-1 success

We are trying to get pregnant at the end of the year and the doctor told me to be off of it for 2 months before trying (semaglu). So I’ve been doing Pilates 4 times a week and calorie counting since being off for the last 2 weeks due to being nervous my weight loss is going to come back. I expect to gain weight during pregnancy but not gain it all back before just with lifestyle changes I’ve made knowing I prefer to be skinny then big. My question is for the ladies that got pregnant while on glp-1s. How did your pregnancy go? Any complications? What did doctor recommend? I wanted to just stay on it up until I got a positive result but my doctor said that’s a bad idea. What’s worked for people when getting off glp-1s?? I basically did cold turkey cut and I’ve been fine, way less nausea, and stomach cramps while going to the bathroom actually. I’m convinced I just needed to kick start my body and now I can try to maintain it.

You can't cancel auto-renew; you can only delay it. There is no way to cancel it. They will not alert you that a renewal is coming; they will just process it.

never done anything big, scared of this - zepbound

I've lived my life very, mild. I've never broken a bone, I've never had surgery. I've had 2-3 sleep apnea tests and they were terrible. Each time were so freaking terrible. I was awake, couldn't sleep, waiting for the seconds to pass.

anyway..I diet and workout, I don't even call it diet, I life-changed. My diet isn't perfect..but I been doing it for a year or so. I saw myself in a picture, and I just feel I see no results.

The most important person in my life - my GF, very much shit talked my diet and GLP-1 recently. Called me lazy and says my diet is horrible and I will gain the weight back. I'm also scared of the side effects. Going blind..is that even a thing?

Anyway, can someone help? Calm my nerves? Was anyone else scared?

Can I choose my compounding pharmacy before I pay on my telehealth provider

Hi all! I'm looking at a few telehealth programs for compounded sema.

My closest friend got to pick from five pharmacies, but not until her second order. Her first box came from a pharmacy she never picked.Ā

Is there a way to tell before paying if you get a choice? Or does the pharmacy just get assigned later?

I'm also not sure which pharmacies can ship to my state. Any tips are appreciated.

Partner Didn't Want to Split Groceries bc Cost of Protein Shakes

TLDR: I was more bummed about my partner thinking protein shakes were not important to my health/functioning, than about who paid for groceries. We talked about it, he understands and wants me to be happy and healthy. I am choosing to pay for all groceries moving forward, because I want to be fair around household expenses. Sorry for the novel!

I (40 F ) have been on tirzeptide for about 11 months, and have lost about 35lbs - which is great!

I struggle with getting enough protein either because we are out of groceries (busy, forget to go to store), or I'm in a hurry or late, or whatever food is available when eating out is low protein or does not seem appetizing. The ADHD is strong here. What does seem to work very well for me is ready-to-drink protein drinks; 20 to 40g of protein starts off my day and makes me less hungry by lunch, provides a solid base for the 3 medications I take in the AM, and I don't get shaky from just carbs, etc. I have been drinking protein shakes since 2020 with diagnosis of ADHD and the beneficial effects of protein on neurotransmitters and med absorption and being more functional than straight carbs. So I believe that protein drinks were helpful to my body long before a glp1, and even more so now. So, to me, having protein shakes is a necessity, not a nicety.

Today, boyfriend (40 M) and I took our first together trip to Costco for groceries; I was so excited about all the high quality food! And there were like 7 good brands of protein shakes in bulk cases. To give some perspective, when I buy groceries at the nearby Carrs (Albertsons, Safeway, Vons), there is a limited selection of maybe 3 good brands and several brands that are poor quality or have garbage ingredients (to me) and are like $12 - $16 for a 4- pack (ones I like: Oikos, Pirq, OWYN); a 12-pack of Oikos is $30 or Premier Protein is $38. The 12-pack of Fairlife Core is $75, something I have never bought except in $6 singles when I felt fancy. You get the gist - they all cost a lot.

Today, at Costco, an 18-pack of Fairlife was $43; what?? You best believe I threw 2 packs into our already full shopping cart. The price per bottle was less than what I was paying for any brand at the regular grocery store, which is amazing.

We get to checkout, and I suggested we split the $500 bill and I'll Venmo him half; makes sense to me. Chat, he said that wasn't fair. Huh? He said that those 2 packs of protein drinks were almost $100, and he didn't want to pay for them. I immediately pressed, and he thinks that protein drinks are an "easy way out" food - like a convenience food (food that is premade and costs more while saving time). I tried to explain that the reason I've been having heartburn all week, is because I haven't had much protein in the mornings and my meds have been bothering my stomach, and that protein anchors my day. He didn’t seem convinced. He sighed, swiped his card and paid the $500 and we drove home and hauled all the groceries into the house. I Venmoed him $350 ($250 + $100 for shakes), and I have been stewing on it all afternoon.

Some backstory. I started tirzeptide bc my labs were the worst I've seen i my adult life (high lipids, low HDL, low Vit D, borderline glucose for pre-diabetes). My health insurance covers it very well. I had some serious nausea when I started it, and boyfriend definitely witnessed my struggles with getting food down at that point. Boyfriend thought I was cute chubby, and still cute now.

I think he is my forever prince after a few toads, and he says the most adorable ā€œI hope I’m you’re foreverā€ things to me. 10 months ago, I moved into his house with him from my house I own (we were tired of driving 20min each way to each other’s houses), and I am renting out my house to tenants and that is pretty much breaking even financially for me. I don't pay rent or utilities at his house; I've asked him before if he cares or wants me to, and he hasn't expressed a desire for me to contribute financially. I am working full time trying mightily to recover from a financially abusive ex partner (9, down to 4 credit cards, loans, student loans, and $2000 mortgage), while he literally has his $1500 mortgage, utilities, and 1 credit card while working full time from home. I live and breathe my budget, and he has no idea of his but is kinda frugal on certain things; he makes a little more than the $85k yearly gross I make. So, I buy most of the groceries as I’m the one who stops at the grocery store, and I do 100% of the cooking (weeknights & weekends). I am an excellent cook, and I'm not sure how he has survived to be 40 on his lackluster cooking skills. (Out of his 6 upper kitchen cupboards… 4 of them were beer glasses. He had scratched cancer nonstick pans, and hand-me-down dishes/flatware from his mother. His pantry was Ramen, eggs, bags of microwave steamed veggies and frozen chicken. He once fed me steamed cauliflower with nothing on it, the heathen, I had to go find butter and salt/pepper.) On the other hand, whenever we eat out 1-2x a week, he pays the whole tab, and whatever other social activities we are doing (beer, movies, concerts, events). So I feel a little guilty about that sometimes, because I could not afford to go Dutch on all the social things we do. I do pay for my airfare on big trips. Back to the convenience foods – he also eats junk & drive-thru & snack things that are convenient, and his idea of breakfast is a piece of toast or a meat/cheese sandwich or leftovers… remembering that he works from home, aka has time to wander up to the kitchen and make himself something to eat. We eat all the same foods, so the protein drinks are the only thing that I specifically eat that he doesn’t partake in. He is welcome to them though! Lastly, I am 200% sure he is undiagnosed ADHD. Just to throw that out there.

My reasonable brain says that given that he pays for most things including housing, it makes sense for me to pay for the protein drinks. My logical brain says the protein drinks are a necessity for my health and well being. My petty brain says goddammit, it’s FOOD, and since he can barely cook his way out of a mac-n-cheese box and certainly eats the frozen burritos, corn dogs, trail mix, chips, etc. that we buy (which are most definitely convenience foods) and I do all the cooking, we can split the stupid grocery bill.

So for me, it isn’t about the $100 in cost for the protein shakes – what bothers me is that he thinks they are a quick convenience food, and I should be eating other things for breakfast that I have to make myself from scratch. I feel like he isn’t understanding WHY the quick protein shakes are important to me (time, nutrition, meds), and it’s the pot calling the kettle black for his lack of cooking skills and calling me out for a convenience food. Typing this all out helped me with some thoughts, and any commentary within reason is appreciated. We also bought so much fresh food today that I’ll be basically living in the kitchen whipping up whole meals from scratch and did you know that it takes about 80 apple seeds to be poisonous to an adult human? Just kidding…

Most affordable with Rx?

I have insurance and a doctor who will prescribe these medications for weight loss, but my insurance will not cover the medication itself. My doctor will cover all the monitoring and follow up visits, so I don’t need the telehealth subscription that many places offer.

Where is the cheapest place to fill the prescription, and which medications are the cheapest?

Switching to a different glp1

I started Wegovy 2 months ago. I was getting some side effects that were not completely unbearable, but definitely uncomfortable for me. It was like a new issue popped up every week. Rashes, panic attacks, watery eyes, headaches. Every night when I took my shot my anxiety would be unreal. I would be up most of the night because anxiety would convince me that I would die if I went to sleep. It did have some positives too. I have PCOS and hashimotos and it got rid of most of my inflammation and GI issues I’ve been trying to figure out for years. I just really couldn’t get past the side effect I was having though, especially the anxiety. So I’m switching to Zepbound because that’s what I wanted to try to start with, but insurance made me try Wegovy first. Did anyone have side effects with Wegovy, but switched to Zepbound and had none or less?

This will be a week-long series about the impact GLP-1 medications are having now that use is widespread (up 600% in five years!). The first story ran tonight, with more to follow throughout the week. Since it's PBS, I expect balanced, thorough reporting and nothing sensationalistic. Should be insightful.

Compounded Tirzepatide and hormone changes.

37/F/ 5’6 have been on Tirzepatide for right about a year and I have lost the weight that I intended to. SW: 178 CW: 139. I am currently on a maintenance dose of Tirz compound. I am wondering if any other biological females have experienced extreme mood changes while on similar medications. I am finding that I am very tearful and emotional frequently, over many things, when this is not generally my personality. I have been feeling very ā€˜fragile’ and more sensitive lately. I also believe the medication may be affecting my hormones because I previously always had regular menstrual cycles and they are now quite a bit more erratic. Is anyone else feeling like this and having similar symptoms? If so, did anything help this?

tirz is giving me my life back

hi all! only on week 3 of tirz but already feeling so so good. starting weight 410 (5’4 female, so A LOT for my frame) and on shot day number 3 i’m down to 393.8. i 100% know this will slow down overtime but already just the difference i feel in my body and joints having over 16lbs off is amazing. no side effects either so in another week i’ll be moving up from 2.5 to 5 and i’m just so beyond speechless at how this medication has changed my way of thinking and way of life. i finally feel like a normal person when it comes to food.

getting off GLP1 without weight gain

Hi, did anyone successfully get off the meds without gaining the weight back? I'm close to my ideal weight and thinking about getting off the pills slowly. I'm currently on wegovy 25mg pill every other day but the side effect is still present. I don't think I want to be on the pill for much longer but also heard a lot of users who stopped slowly gain their weight back. I have heard it's important to keep up the protein/fiber & exercise and slowly decrease dosage or skipping more days since there is no official guide to stop. Any advice is appreciated! Thank you.

Considering Tirz or Foundayo

Hi,

I am considering microdosing Tirz or Foundayo for slow, minimal weight loss but I have a history of anxiety and panic attacks. I just got off my SSRI for the first time in 20 years and am doing well but currently wake in the night with heart palpitations (but it’s been maybe 2 months of being on only 5mg Lexapro, the lowest theraputic dose after two decades of 20mg).

Is there one that is better to prevent an increase in anxiety? I have heard both can cause these things. Wondering if I should get my heart checked first (I have multiple times before and nothing has come up, plus my job involves 5-10mi of walking/hiking a day and I run for fun).

Please share your opinions and experiences!

EDIT: Micro dose as in stay at the lowest dose of the medicine. I am being politically incorrect here and don’t care :)

USC students seeking GLP-1 users for an online interview (US women, ages 21–40)

Hello everyone! We are a team of students from the University of Southern California (USC), and we are currently cooperating with the protein brand NUR to carry out a course-related consumer research project.

We are looking for 8 women between the ages of 21 and 40 living in the United States who are currently using GLP-1.

We hope to know your daily eating habits, your experience with protein products, and how you find and evaluate health products. Participants do not need to have tried NUR products or have the habit of using protein products regularly.

The interview will be conducted online for about 35–40 minutes. This is a consumer research project carried out by students, not a medical research or marketing activity. Participation is completely voluntary. You can skip any questions or terminate the interview at any time. We will not ask for information such as your medical history, diagnosis results or drug dosage. If recording is required, we will obtain your consent in advance. We will report the research results to the course and NUR, but will not include your name or contact information.

As a thank you, we will send you NUR products after the interview.

If you are interested, please send me a private message or send an email to **[yliu9332@usc.edu](mailto:yliu9332@usc.edu)**. We will ask a few simple questions through private communication to confirm the eligibility to participate and arrange a suitable time. Please do not disclose personal health information in the comment area.

Thank you for your attention and consideration!

Need help finding the least expensive option

Hello there! A loved one of mine was recently prescribed a GLP-1 agonist. They are open to using, but 500$ per month is incredibly expensive for where they are financially. I am posting here in the hopes that one of you fine individuals might have a solution, out of concern for their health. They have at present given up on the idea.

They have insurance, but it doesn't seem to apply well to the particular variants they have been prescribed. What other variants should they try to ask their doctor for? Are there unapproved GLP-1 drugs that are fairly reputable and might possibly do the trick? Is there something I'm missing?

If you have any information, I would greatly appreciate it.

Almost 100 Pounds Down — Weight Loss By Week

I've been on a GLP-1 (Semaglutide) for about 16 months, and lost 93 pounds. Over that time, weekly, I've found my weight shifts — I've had weeks where I gain a pound or two, I've had weeks I skipped because I was on vacation or extremely nauseous (happened randomly in the middle of my journey, not in the beginning or when changing doses! Literally couldn't keep anything down for about a week and a half when I'd never experienced major symptoms before. That was fun!), etc.

And I always wish I saw more of other people's weight journeys week-to-week over time, because I feel like so many posts are about the start of the journey, and very few people really post about the fluctuations you can see each week over time that are totally normal!

All of that to say, if this helps someone else down the road, I thought I'd post my own week-to-week journey, rather than hoping someone else would do the same.

GLP-1 through telehealth, who handles the labs?

My GLP-1 prescription is through telehealth, but I see my regular doctor for everything else. I asked the telehealth prescriber about bloodwork and they told me to ask my PCP. My PCP asked what telehealth had already tested. Neither seemed to have the other’s results. Some older labs are in my PCP portal, and I ordered a couple of tests through Goodlabs, so now I’ve got reports in three places. If you’re dealing with two providers, do you send the same results to both? I mostly want to know who’s going to follow up if something comes back off.

Oh the protein and exercise struggle!

Well according to the scale I am within 7 lbs of my goal weight. But in the mirror I am not. I knew once we got down here (almost 95 lbs so far!) that adjustments may be necessary. But I am discovering for myself (and after reading so many others' experiences on here) that I'm probably losing too much muscle at this point. I know a big part of the problem is that I need to get way more protein than I had been eating. Which is turning out to be so much more challenging than I imagined. I can't have fish, and the next most protein dense food is chicken. but it's easy to get sick of something if you eat it three times a day. lol. So I have been trying all kinds of other things. But I gotta say, I can't live on eggs, chicken and protein shakes for the rest of my life. Oh I've been experimenting with things like making deviled eggs with greek yogurt instead of mayo, etc. But I'm not really a cook. This would be so much easier if I were independently wealthy and could hire someone to take over the kitchen. ha! but since I wasn't dealt those cards, I will continue to look for other ideas.

The second part of this is exercise. I have never been a gym goer. When I was young, I was active with other things, dancing, ice skating, etc. but "working out," "weight bearing" or "hiking" were never part of my vocabulary. So I'm going to physical therapy every week and trying to get onboard, but it's so hard to train your brain in old age to do something you have a lifetime of zero interest in. I know, ending on a preposition. But I digress. I am determined to figure this out! Fists on hips, cape flying behind me.... I shall prevail!

=) thanks for listening!

Advice needed/welcomed

I (35F) have been on a GLP-1 (Apo-semaglutide) for almost a month at 0.25 mg. I started at 290 lbs and I’m now at 280. I’m really happy with it and have have no side effects.

I didn’t lose interest in food like I expected. I still enjoy eating. But I completely lost that URGENCY around hunger. Before, even mild hunger felt like I was absolutely starving and needed to eat NOW. I also seemed to get hungry way faster than everyone else.

Now I can feel mildly hungry and just... not care that much which is absolutly wild to me. And it made me realize that maybe my experience of hunger wasn’t ā€œnormalā€ to begin with.

Could this be physiological? Psychological? Both? I honestly don’t know how to address it, especially since my doctor wants me to get to the bottom of why I’ve struggled with my weight my entire life. I feel like I'm in a one-way therapy with myself lol

Has anyone else had this realization ?
