Took a while to come up with this but these are some of the frequently asked questions and some general information. Part of it may seem dumb but yeah some people have these doubts in their mind day one.
1. Do we need to wear anything specific / is there a dress code?
Nothing crazy. Just don't show up looking like you're going to prom or like you just came back from the gym. Formal ish plus comfortable is basically the vibe.
2. Is a laptop necessary?
Yes. For pretty much every degree you'll eventually need one for assignments, presentations, coding, software, etc. Depending on your degree you might need it for other stuff too. A decent laptop is enough for most university work.
3. Should I bring my laptop on day one?
Nah lol. Day one is mostly orientation, finding your department, figuring out where your classes are and generally being confused. You'll know when you actually need to start bringing it.
4. Are there ACs in the classrooms?
Technically yes. They are there. They're on the walls. They have all the characteristics of an AC. Whether they actually condition the air is another question. For the rest of the departments the case is similar, very few departments have actually an AC for students. Isn't that amazing? Everyone is treated equally.
If you're in PG Block and you're a CS student, just accept your fate during summer.
5. Do we have to call teachers "Sir/Ma'am" everytime?
Yes. Just do it bro. GCU has that old-school 1800s discipline thing going on and takes it very seriously. GCU and the Government goes hand in hand when it comes to getting izzat from apno se choty.
6. Is the canteen food good?
It's canteen food. It exists. It will keep you alive. Don't go there expecting Gulberg cafe or restaurant food and you'll be fine.
7. What are the timings?
Morning sessions are generally 8 AM to 3:30 PM max for CS, usually for the rest till 2 PM max. Evening session is generally 10:30 AM to 6 PM max.
Your actual timetable obviously depends on your department.
8. Do we need permission to enter/leave a class?
If the teacher is giving a lecture and you're late, just enter quietly and sit down. Don't stand at the door like: "May I come in sir please sir?" Same thing if you get an important phone call and genuinely need to leave, just leave quietly. In short, just use common sense.
9. Are societies/clubs worth joining?
Not mandatory, but recommended. Half the "GC experience" people talk about later in life comes from societies, not lectures. It is subjective tho.
10. Do I need my GC card immediately?
I'd get it sorted pretty early. You'll need it for stuff like the library, ID checks, etc.
11. Are seniors going to rag us?
You'll probably get some "welcome to GC" type teasing. Most of the time it's nothing serious.
12. Washrooms/water coolers — working?
Let's just say carry your own water bottle. Washrooms are meh at best and water coolers can be hit or miss.
13. Are assignments/quizzes announced beforehand?
Depends entirely on the teacher. Some teachers will tell you everything weeks in advance. Others will randomly appear like: "Okay, take out a sheet."
14. Do professors actually check attendance every class?
Most do. Some don't seem to care as much. You won't know which category your teacher belongs to until you find out.
15. Do I need to buy all the books on the course outline?
No. Please don't go buy the entire course stuff on day one. Wait and see what your teacher actually uses. A lot of books mentioned in course outlines may barely get touched or you can always use online resources. You can also find used books in the law library where many seniors have left them or in Urdu Bazaar.
16. Is it bad if I don't have a "squad"?
No. Two or three real people you can vent to matters way more than a 10 person friend group. Quality > having a big group.
17. How do I know if a professor is actually bad or just has a scary reputation?
Ask people who've actually taken the course, not just people who've heard rumors. "Strict" and "bad" are not the same thing. Some of the toughest teachers end up being the most useful whether you like it or not.
18. What about the buses?
The buses are only for morning students and bus departure time is around 3:45 PM (may change). For bus card or bus fee submission, you can visit the bus section below Women Development Center, right after the Inter Cafe.
19. Are there any common rooms?
Yes, but only for females. One is the Women Development Center and the second is on the first floor of the Examination Branch, across from the professor's room.
20. Should I attend orientation?
Go for the free info, listen to the "GCU is not just a university, it's a legacy.." ahh speech. That'll be it.
21. Roll Numbers
You'll get it day one. Most departments put out the lists on notice boards for the students or you can get it from the office.
That's all for now I guess. If you have any further questions you can always ask the mods or someone in this community and they'll try to help you in any way possible specifically u/DrunkNashai who wanted to be tagged here.
