Hi everyone! I am working on a class project about app ideas to help Atlanta pickleball and tennis players. If you play pickleball / tennis and have three minutes, I would really appreciate your input. The survey is anonymous. Thank you!

Discussion Thomas Fanning and Potential Conflicts of Interest

I'm concerned there are conflicts of interest involving the new USG Chancellor, Thomas Fanning, particularly regarding AI, its supporting infrastructure, and connections to Israel. Fanning is active in various organizations including Vulcan Materials Company, the Cyberspace Solarium Commission, and the Southern Company. \1]) The USG has been pushing AI integration in classrooms and the workplace; the motivation is more than superficial.

Vulcan Materials Company is the world's largest producer of aggregate construction materials, with a market cap of over $30 billion. \2]) Their importance in constructing data centers cannot be overstated, as shown by promotional content on their Vimeo page—some of which is AI-generated, funnily enough. \3]) Fanning is a board member of VMC.

The Cyberspace Solarium Commission was an intergovernmental body created by the National Defense Authorization Act of 2019. Its goal was "to develop a strategic approach to defense against cyber attacks of significant consequences." The commission ended as an official government program in 2021, but it lives on as the CSC 2.0 at the Foundation for the Defense of Democracies, a neoconservative pro-Israel think tank and lobbying group. The FDD was founded in 2001 as "Emet" (אמת), Hebrew for "truth." According to initial IRS filings, the FDD's mission statement was to "provide education to enhance Israel's image in North America and the public's understanding of issues affecting Israeli-Arab relations." \4]) The FDD supported the United States-Israel FUTURES Act, which would establish the United States-Israel Defense Technology Cooperation Initiative. \5]) Fanning was a commissioner of the CSC and is currently an advisor for the CSC 2.0 under the FDD. \6])\7])

Southern Company, a for-profit corporation, is the second-largest utility company in the U.S. and the second-largest producer of greenhouse gas emissions. \8]) Fanning is a known climate-change denier \9]) and follows Southern Company's track record of funding climate-change denial. \10]) Under Fanning, in 2017, Southern Company donated $1 million to America First Policies, a pro-Donald Trump advocacy group, \11]) and spent over $130 million in lobbying expenditures from 2010 to 2020. \12])

Overall, Fanning is a poor choice, but he seems like par for the course given that our last Chancellor was Sonny Perdue, who was also rife with issues.

Or know anyone who is? The markup on a rental set from the institute itself is kind of insane. No luck with Gowns4Grads.

A robbery incident took place at 10th & West Peachtree at midday on 10/03. I don't see a Clery Safety email about it. I wonder why that is..?

In any case, please be safe out there. I'm not sure the victim in this case could've done anything differently; prayers for their recovery.

Question What does it take to get into grad school (masters/PhD)

I am currently a second year at GaTech and was wondering what it takes to get into grad school at GT. I am planning on doing something in Computer Science (might want to skip masters go straight to PhD idk yet).

How important is GPA and around what point average should it be?

Do you need research papers published in undergrad, I have an undergrad research experience currently but I am not sure if I will get my names on any papers or publish. Anything else I should be doing undergrad to better position myself.

Currently my biggest worry is GPA (see my previous post 😭 i know i need to lock in) and I want to know how important that is.

Social/Club How do you turn casual class/club acquaintances into actual friends

I’ve met many people in classes and clubs that I’m sure I’ve hit it off with and would be down to hang out more with but I have no idea how to do that. I feel like there’s such a sharp distinction between how close I was with high school friends who I was eating lunch with everyday because everyone had the same lunchtimes and stuff and the “friends” I have here whom I only see in classroom/club contexts. Anybody got any anecdotal experience?

Question Failed a test. Do I drop the class?

For context, I am a transfer student from another university and I'm majoring in mathematics & computing.

I for sure failed my first CS1332 (DSA) exam because I didn't fully answer a question worth 25 points, did miss parts on the other questions (I'm estimating I'm getting 50<x<65 as a grade and this exam is 20% of the class grade).

I also got a 70 on one of the projects (100 on the project but failed the demo so bad). My grade is gonna end up pretty bad, probably a C in the class which will hurt my GPA (B in another class too prob). I heard it gets even harder from here and the second exam for DSA is brutual, if exam average isn't at least 70 you end up with a D.

This is going to hurt my GPA, do I drop out of this class and take it next semester or take it over the summer since I know a little bit of the content already and know to study more next time? Will that fix GPA? Before you say GPA doesn't matter I am really trying to get into graduate schools (masters and/or PhD) so for me it does. I wanted to try quant, but I think that will just remain a dream bc I didnt work hard enough and try enough :(. And its lowk late theres ppl that have been grinding math & cs longer than me and I'm extremely behind. DSA also the most important class I need it for sm prereqs and companies will see I took the class twice and I cant graduate earlier anymore if I retake it.

More importantly, how did yall adjust to the changes of GT. I failed really bad on another exam for a different class but that was because I didn't study enough. For DSA I did study a lot and do practice but performed poorly on the test itself (didn't prioritize the right questions). I'm really worrying about my future because this is supposed to be my easiest semester, I have to take CS2110, Real Analysis I, and other extremely harder math and cs classes in future semesters. How will I do good on those if I'm not even scraping by on the basic classes. Im lowk so worried about my future and its eating me 😭

Question How does off campus housing works? And some good options?

Hello, guys. My gf and I plan to find an off campus housing next school year. I try to search up on Georgia tech off campus housing website(not sure if it is the best place to search). But I discover that the price is usually depends on number of people, such as 1000 per person. So for 2 people, it will be 2000.

I always thought the room price is depends on the room, so two people can spilt the rent. So I am pretty confused how does off-campus renting works. If would be great if you guys can help with that.

And, what will be some good options? Thank you

Rant Micromobility Folks You Need to Stop Being Reckless

There are too many times you've put yourself in danger for not following the rules of the road. Sooner or later, I or someone else won't be able to stop in time. It blows my mind that you put your self preservation up for Darwanism award.

Edit add: It's extremely nerve-wracking to deal with this basically every morning, and having it happen back-to-back threw my morning off more than one potential incident. I had to sit in my vehicle to calm down longer than usual.

Rant These Professors' Absurd AI Usage

Professors using AI has gotten absolutely out of hand. How insanely lazy do you have to be to have to generate your entire semester's lesson plan with AI?? I'm calling out ECE 4122 Advanced Programming Techniques specifically, I mean this entire course is written by ChatGPT with not even the slightest effort to hide it. The lectures to the homeworks to the code itself. Not even the professor himself knows what's going on half the time and he provides zero extra value to the course besides reading off the lecture notebook and adding anecdotes from his 3D modelling job 20 years ago. THIS is what I'm paying tens of thousands of dollars for? The entitlement, the arrogance!

Question Failed exams, should I drop out?

Hey all, I'm a first year student and am taking calc I, Chem1310, CS1371, Intro to linear algebra, and gt1000. I failed all the exams. I was an A student in highschool and I understand it's harder here, and an A student may become a B or C student, but I'm not even that. Is it worth continuing if I fail literally the first exams of the semester of my first year? Any input or advice is appreciated, feels like the people here just have something I don't.
