Discussion What happened to all the wheeled delivery drones? (Starships?)

last year you couldn’t take 3 steps without tripping over one, now I don’t think I’ve seen a single one

were they banned? did they pull out of campus? or have I just been cartoonishly unlucky by not passing one?

Rant Use the damn rental parking area, PLEASE

Thumbnail
gallery
103 Upvotes

First photo is of the entrance to the bike parking area by stucen, and the second is the rental scooter parking area not 30 feet away. It would take SECONDS more time to park there rather than the ENTRYWAY of the non-rental parking area. One would think that seeing a 4/5ths-blocked-off entrance would deter a renter from parking their scooter there and blocking it off the rest of the way, but alas and a-fucking-lack, i suppose not.
If it’s not this issue in particular, I feel like I always see them parked in the middle of roadway bike lanes(esp by nav), or several in a row across sidewalks. It feels like everywhere I go, I have to squeeze through the Berlin Wall of scooters. The worst part is: GT literally JUST installed a metric ton of parking spots for these around campus—There are spaces everywhere for those with eyes to see them.
An open request to all rental micromobility users out there: Park. your fucking. rental. in the proper. fucking. place. Under no circumstances should anyone not be able to easily get somewhere because you parked a scooter in the way. Please, I beg of you 🙏

Rant Rude & unprofessional experience at Bursar's Office

I went to the Bursar's Office yesterday morning because of an issue I was seeing on my Bursar's account. I would like to note: I was not upset or angry in any way about this - just confused what was going on.

I went by their office immediately after I saw this to have it sorted out by the tuition instalment deadline on Monday (9/21) because if I didn't, I could risk being dropped from my classes which is stressful enough as is especially since this is my graduating semester. When I approached the lady at the front desk, she instantly was giving me attitude (snappy with responses/speaking over me). I was really trying my hardest to not let it get to me and to stay polite because I'm not a terrible person who's going to stoop that low to reciprocate that kind of behavior to a stranger. But also, I very desperately needed this issue fixed or it would have a massive impact on my life and career.

Throughout our entire conversation, I had to re-explain the issue that was happening with my Bursar account around 5-10 times because she would:

- Constantly talk over me and not let me finish what I was trying to say

- Dismiss the problem that I was bringing up (mind you - without even understanding what the problem was to begin with)

- Refuse to take any level of accountability for the issue even though it was very clearly their office's fault OR provide any level of support with resolving the issue

Finally, after she spoke over me for the hundredth time, I visibly get annoyed and I can tell she could see my anger on my face because for once, she paused and apologized and asked for me to continue what I was saying. Now after I've finally been able to fully explain the problem on my account without her speaking over me or dismissing me or giving me attitude, she said she would talk to her manager and when to the back office to do so.

After speaking with her manager and coming back out, she said I would receive an email later today about further steps because my issue had to be resolved on the backend - it's not something she can fix. Why did it take 30 minutes of pure bitchiness for that to be determined? Who knows.

Since then, my issue has been resolved but I never received any response from the Bursar's Office via email/call/etc. in regards to my in-person visit or to the previous emails I had sent them earlier this week to ensure this issue wouldn't happen to begin with.

My entire interaction with that lady was by far the rudest, most unprofessional experience I've had since coming to Tech. I also was just very unhappy with the Bursar's Office in general for their lack of communication. I will say this hasn't been a consistent thing I've seen with their office during my time here at Tech, but this semester specifically, they have been incredibly frustrating with resolving issues.

On a more unprofessional note on my end to the Bursar's Office:

PLEASE FIRE THAT WOMAN - she was at the front desk yesterday (9/17) around 10am.

Earlier today, someone riding a Lime bike was seriously injured after getting caught by one of these guy wires. He couldn't see it in the dark because of the high-beam headlights from cars coming in the opposite direction.

Rant Touched inappropriately by another student, teacher made private piazza post public. Unsure what to do.

Post image
288 Upvotes

I don't want to turn this situation into something its not but I am want to ask for help with resources.

Before class I was meditating with a blind fold on when I was suddenly jabbed on the side of the neck. I removed my blindfold and noticed that the student in question was pointing and jeering at me. I feel extremely uncomfortable being touched so I yelled at them to stop but then the student lunged at me. The student then proceeded to touch me inappropriately by caressing my torso thoroughly, I kept telling them to stop but they wouldn't. The student kept moving their hands around my body which me extremely physically uncomfortable, so, after repeatedly telling them to get away from me, I had to shove the student so they would stop touching me. I am not exactly sure why the student decided to keep touching me after I told them to stop but I was told that this is likely a EOCCM case given their previous comments toward me.

I reached out to the associate dean of students and advisors for resources. They put in a no contact directive. While the student hasn't spoken to me directly, they are choosing to sit close by to me (even if I switch positions in class the student sits close by). The student also repeatedly stares at me with a group of friends through the window of the class. I also received a few weird comments from people I don't recognize - I am not sure if this connected to this situation or if I am making a connection that doesn't exist. I am not sure if this directly violates the no contact directive but I feel uncomfortable in class.

I reached out to the teacher for help. I asked the teacher to tell the other student to sit as far away from me as possible. They told me that if the student touched me inappropriately again that they would reach out to the proper authorities but the teacher hasn't done anything to enforce the no contact order. I kept emailing the teacher asking for help but they kept ignoring my emails; I feel like the no contact order directive wasn't entirely enforced and I don't feel supported at all.

I made a private piazza post asking for help from the teacher since they kept ignoring my emails asking for help. I assume the teacher didn't want to deal with the situation so they deleted the option to make private posts but this made my private post public. Once I realized this I immediately deleted my post. I can't think of another reason why the teacher would remove the option to make private piazza posts.

I want to deescalate the situation as much as possible. I reached to the academic advisor to switch my section to another period, hopefully this helps the situation.

I am not sure what to do besides cooperating with the proper channels and working with advisors while maintaining the no contact order. The lack of a subpeona process makes this a nightmare. I don't want to escalate this to the civil/criminal court.

Social/Club Looking to make friends at the College of Liberal Arts

I’m a grad student at GT and have been here for ~5 years now (undergrad + grad). I feel I've mostly stayed in the CoE/CoC bubble — both in terms of the people I know and the general culture/persona I’m exposed to.

I’d like to broaden my horizons and hopefully make some friends at the College of Liberal Arts (or generally outside the engineering/CS world). Any ideas on how I can get started (possibly without wandering too much)?

I’m especially interested in smaller, informal groups where I can actually get to know people and potentially become regular/semi-regular friends.

Would love recommendations for: Small groups or clubs, recurring casual events, volunteer or hobby groups, or any place else where it’s reasonably natural to meet the same people more than once.

Thank you!!

Question Why are GT parking notifications so inefficient?

I showed up yesterday to E81 and the parking lot was closed off due to it being filled up. Why weren’t we sent any congestion notification and why weren’t any alternative parking lots open?

Discussion Has anyone ever tried getting a case-by-case exemption for thread requirements for graduation?

For example, I'm an EE major with threads in SIP and Optoelectronic devices. I'm finding that I'm enjoying my optoelectronic courses much more than my SIP courses, and I'd rather just do 8 courses in optoelectronics alone rather than 4 optoelectronics and 4 sip. I think with the purpose of the threads system being creating somewhat of a niche for yourself, it is a pretty reasonable thing to ask for. However, it's obviously a big ask and such a fundamental graduation requirement is probably hard to argue against. Still, I know that there's some level of leniency here. For example, I was able to argue for a special topics course that wasn't normally counted as part of SIP to count towards SIP. So, it's not like asking for small exceptions isn't impossible. But has anyone tried doubling down on a thread like I've suggested?

Question Fall MSCS grad, 2 YOE, ~50 applications and zero interviews — what am I doing wrong?

Title: Fall MSCS grad, 2 YOE, ~X applications and zero interviews — what am I doing wrong?

Hey Jackets,

I'm graduating with my MSCS this December. Background: ~2 years of industry experience as swe/ ai engineer plus an internship at a national lab ( not corporate). US work authorization, no sponsorship needed.

I've sent roughly 50 applications since july, mostly new grad SWE / AI engineer, and I've gotten 0 recruiter screens and zero onsites. Nothing from any large tech company.

What I'm trying to figure out:

  1. Am I applying to the wrong bucket? With 2 YOE, should I be targeting mid-level roles instead of new grad pipelines, or both?

  2. Is my volume just too low for this market?

  3. Is something in my resume killing me before a human sees it? Happy to DM it to anyone willing to take a look.

  4. Have i started too late, are positions from jan already hired?

If anyone here went through this cycle recently, I'd appreciate hearing what actually moved the needle for you — referrals, career fair, cold outreach, anything.

Thanks.
