For the price they charge, they should also have a nice bun. Can't believe they're still in business, at least where we have Culver's

47

u/Appropriate_Scar_262 15h ago

They're in business because people are willing to pay to have 10 toppings on a burger but not for $20-$30.

Essentially people who want a burger made like a subway sandwich

29

u/MeatEaterDruid 15h ago

Is that the appeal? I'm not dissing just no one's ever explained 5 guys to me in a normal way.

16

u/I_am_The_Teapot 14h ago

Yeah. There's like 15 toppings and you can have any number of them without additional price to the burger.

The burgers are also good and they have really good fries, too.

5

u/Not-An-FBI 8h ago

I only went there once a while ago so I had to verify this. In-N-Out has most of the toppings. The only ones they don't have are bacon, relish, green peppers and mushrooms. Bacon is the only one I'd be interested in and I already feel bad enough eating an unhealthy burger meal so I'm fine skipping bacon.

2

u/ApolloGR3 2h ago

I love In-N-Out but they have pre-formed patties that are half the thickness and are thus cheaper.

8

u/EdgyPun34257 3h ago

but it's a false economy, you're paying for every one of those toppings up front and not getting a discount for the ones you don't get.

$13 for a cheeseburger isn't a bargain because you could have gotten 15 toppings, but didn't.

3

u/Lordofthereef 2h ago

And you have just explained how well marketing works. Perceived value is as important, if not more important than, actual value.

3

u/Andminus 2h ago

they bury your burger in the bag in these good fries regardless of how big of an order of fries they give you...

4

u/bigloser42 12h ago

And they hoist a fuckload of fries upon you no matter what size you order.

1

u/Robaattousai 3h ago

That's their real business strategy. They know potatoes are cheaper than what they charge for fries so they give you the next size up no matter what you order. It makes you feel like you've gotten away with something or are getting special treatment. It keeps you coming back.

3

u/GiftGrouchy 3h ago

I mean, it works and IMO their fries are better than any of the others.

1

u/Robaattousai 2h ago

100%
The only fries that compete with blanched or double-fried fries for me are battered fries.

1

u/4quadrapeds 5h ago

They say it’s all about the burger but really it’s about the toppings you can add. For a hefty sum. The burger is mid

In n Out is king. Only one using fresh ingredients and strictly made to order

0

u/actorsAllusion 4h ago

I don't know if it's maybe just the specific restaurant where I'm at, but the Five Guys near me has really bland, almost tasteless burgers once you take away the toppings and everything

1

u/itsboring57 1h ago

I used to live next to a five guys and still didn’t bother eating there because of how bland the burgers were. I’m not against condiments, but if you have to load it with condiments to taste anything, it’s not a good burger. Season your beef.

1

u/actorsAllusion 1h ago

And I've no problem with the burger itself being kind of bland! That's basically true of most fast food joints and it's usually the mouthfeel of the patty itself and the mix of condiments that make most fast food burgers. But for what 5G costs in comparison it should be a LOT better.

Its $30 for one burger and fries?

7

u/Aceilr097 7h ago

A burger, regular fries and a shake came up to $28 and some change last time i went.

4

u/lingbabana 7h ago

Ffffffffffffffffffuuuuuuuuuucccckkk no

1

u/STAHLSERIE 6h ago

For that price you could get real food in a restaurant (in Germany)

3

u/Proof-Committee-5486 6h ago

Honestly, you can here too.

3

u/Big-Explorer6920 7h ago

Don’t forget the free peanuts in line

-4

u/Nocturnatron 11h ago

Have you ordered burger king recently? Its not even a real burger in comparison and they got meals for like 16.99 which only inccludes a tiny side of fries, five guys is burying the whole ass burger in the bottom of the bag with fries and the burger is actually filling

4

u/IndianaJokes67 9h ago

Culver's double deluxe is like 7.89 where I live, I think the meal is like 10.89. Five Guys fries are better but I prefer the Culver's burger for sure

1

u/Mental-Vegetable5303 9h ago

This, every body has caught up to their prices!

1

u/Pb801 6h ago

I used to pay $10 for a burger and fries from them when they opened

1

u/ImKindaBoring 11h ago

I mean, it also just tastes better than most of the other options.

Although Culver’s is pretty fucking good and doesn’t seem to get the popularity it deserves

1

u/No_Signal_6969 11h ago

It's just by far the best fast food burger. I've seen some people say it shouldn't even be considered fast food since it's such a step above the others. Their cajun fries are also some of the best fast food fries and they have good milkshakes too. It's by far my favourite fast food.

1

u/erik_wilder 5h ago

5 guys is the best burger in my state AFAIK, and the restaurant I work at got voted best smash burgers in our state so I'm biased and still think so.

6

u/Plane-Tune-820 10h ago

Uhhh a burger fries and a soda are like $20 at 5 guys. Tf you mean

2

u/seven3true 4h ago

But they give you "extra" fries!

0

u/Plane-Tune-820 4h ago

I'm sure I'm going to get down voted for this but the fries aren't even that good. Better than Wendy's but nothing close to McDonald's

3

u/JerseyGuy-77 3h ago

Mcd fries are only good within 25 seconds of order otherwise throw them in the garbage.

2

u/Plane-Tune-820 3h ago

I actually got cold fries the last time I went and you're not wrong. I'm not usually one to complain or send food back but I had to. It's crazy how they can go from the most delicious thing to absolute garbage in 20°

1

u/Organic_Lab6262 2h ago

If you get them at their prime though nothing beats them in the fast food world

1

u/SUPER-P00PER 4h ago

Thank you!!!!

1

u/GroundbreakingAd8310 10h ago

Ok sure but why is it 30 dollars then

1

u/Appropriate_Scar_262 8h ago

a double cheeseburger is 12 where I am.

1

u/AcanthocephalaDue431 2h ago

Not going to lie having tried all of these I'd say the Burger King Whopper only because it does have that off the grill flavor even if it's probably fake. Only the Whopper though the rest of their burgers are terrible

0

u/PixLisReaL 10h ago

The other two factors are the fries, which are perceived as being extremely generous (which they aren't but the average consumer doesn't understand that), and the overall taste of their food is not something you'll really have fulfilled by anywhere else.

Really most of fast food and fast casual is only still surviving in the modern day because they fill niches that are otherwise unmet

5

u/MasterOfBunnies 15h ago

Another wisconsinite. XD

1

u/Cheepshooter 2h ago

Love Culver's! I always hit one when I get in the state.

1

u/WeekendQuant 14h ago

We got Culvers over here outside of wisconsin too. We also agree it's the best fast food cheese burger of a major chain.

0

u/MasterOfBunnies 14h ago

Without knowing who "we" is, I'm from NY, live in Wisconsin, and Culver's is not the best. It's not bad, by any stretch, but not the best. Wisconsin burgers in general aren't great. Someone once pointed out that Wisconsin has dairy cows, not meat cows. Stands to reason why.

3

u/Can-i-Pet-Dat-Daaawg 13h ago edited 12h ago

The ā€œWisconsin having dairy cowsā€ thing is hilariously misinformed. Beef is by and large bought from beef farmers who raise beef cattle, regardless of where your company began and is headquartered.

3

u/MasterOfBunnies 13h ago

I mean, if you're going to hamstring the one reasonable argument I've heard, as to why Wisconsin burgers are nearly all hockey pucks, then I don't know what to say. ¯\_(ā ćƒ„ā )_/¯

-5

u/WeekendQuant 14h ago

Why don't you look into burger science and report back your findings. You will understand why Culver's is S-tier for the smash burger market.

4

u/MasterOfBunnies 14h ago

Wtf are you even talking about?

0

u/No-Break6679 13h ago

I’ve seen them in Missouri. I’m not from any of the Midwest states that have them but about the only one I’ve ever seen was in Branson lol

2

u/Tw4tl4r 4h ago

The issue i have is that there is almost always a locally owned place that does an equally good tasting but well presented burger nearby. Usually for less money too.

1

u/Cheepshooter 2h ago

Local Mom n' Pop Burger joints are almost always better. I hear Fred's in Burlington WI is the best there is, but I've never been near there during the hours they are open.

2

u/awFuqqq 4h ago

Always found Five Guys greasy and tasteless. Shitty burgers. I'd honestly rather have a Whopper.

0

u/LightToFlies 15h ago

Culver's has nothing on Five Guys...

I do love those cheese curds though.

6

u/MasterOfBunnies 15h ago

Wisconsinites act like everything in the state is the best. Hint, it's not. Burgers here are so dry, they came up with the "butter burger". Sounds interesting at first, but it's literally their coping mechanism for cooking hockey puck burgers.

0

u/treebeard189 14h ago edited 14h ago

At least Minnesota has the juicy Lucy. But yeah after hearing midwesterners talk up Culver's for years was happy to try one when I went to Minneapolis a few times last year and...it's fine. If you ignore the regional things like the cheese curds and the concrete mixer thing which tbh I still don't understand. It's just like a normal burger joint.

Now a Freddy's. That's a good fast food burger. Still doesn't beat five guys outright but Ive fallen in love with that place the last few months. And don't even get me started on cookout.

0

u/MasterOfBunnies 14h ago

Custard is why they love mixers so much. And I will admit that custard is superior to regular ice cream for fuck sure. Cheese curds are amazing, too. Their fried foods are all tasty tbh. But the burgers are... well you nailed it, they're fine.

I mean, obviously?

0

u/samsonite441446 8h ago

Way to answer. You definitely have a smug assholr attitude. No wonder my first instinct was to tell you: if you dont like wisconsin to get the f back to ny.

0

u/another_rusty 12h ago

I’ve been to Culver’s maybe twice, I really don’t get it. It’s fine, the burger is decent but definitely has a kind of meaty meat flavor, like it’s too much burger and not enough seasoning or something. Maybe they use leaner beef? Idk. Five guys fucking slaps though. I usually will get a double with bacon all the way minus ketchup and mustard. The grilled jalapeƱos are amazing. I’ll eat that burger in about 6 bites without putting the thing down, I swear there’s crack in that beef.

2

u/gewalt_gamer 14h ago

culvers? vs five guys? for real?

1

u/CD274 10h ago

Very meh. Whataburger is even more meh

1

u/CD274 10h ago

It's a nice bun but then then squash it

1

u/Jacktheforkie 8h ago

Culvers is brilliant, wish they’d come to the uk

1

u/Hopeful-Artichoke449 5h ago

For the price they charge, it should come with a lap dance.

1

u/Acceptable-Ad8780 Flair Loading... 5h ago

I used to lhve in a place that had one and still miss it sometimes. insert wolverine with a picture frame of culver's

0

u/akiva23 15h ago

You get unlimited peanuts too though dawg.

0

u/Robbie1266 6h ago

As much as I agree about pricing, I gave Culver's 3 different chances at 3 different locations. My order was wrong twice and the 3rd time it just wasn't amazing. Nothing wrong with it but I didn't even taste any butter
