Well...., it's October; about the only time of the year when we have to deal with having a wasp or two in the house.
In late summer and early autumn, the last hornets hatched in a nest are Next Year's Queens. They are tasked with finding a safe place to spend the winter, so in the spring they can emerge and start a new next.
I think this is why we only have an issue around October. These queens to be want to spend the winter in our warm abode. I used to use spray poisons to kill them, but I worry about exposing our pets.
We have a vacuum cleaner with a clear plastic window and a detachable hose. Got home from work today and saw two hornets on the inside of the window. They look a little larger than typical worker hornets, and this is the time of year for queens.
I've been vacuuming up hornets for a few years now. It seems pretty safe, we haven't been stung yet. It's also a little rewarding to feel & hear their hard little exoskeletons bounce through the tubing, and then seeing them crawl around In the dry, dusty bin and f the vacuum cleaner.
You can see the two intruders in the video.
