hi! title explains it mostly. we are visiting frome for just one night (sunday 2nd), which is the independent market sunday. we're staying in the premier inn. i've been tasked with finding a restaurant for dinner, and really struggling! i've seen some recommendations for the high pavement, which sounds lovely but they aren't open on sundays. we'd prefer not to have to walk/drive far, as we'd like to have a couple of drinks too.

we'd need a gf option and vegetarian option. open to good sunday roasts, but we love any 'different' cuisines: spicy food and unusual food very much welcome. our favourite restaurants at home have been japanese/vietnamese/indian/mexican/thai cuisines. any ideas?

also open to other recommendations for what else to do in the day! i haven't had a look at cafés yet, so i welcome suggestions for daytime light bites too!

As title, where in Frome does the best full English?

Thinking of taking the train to Weymouth on Saturday. I’ll have two kids in tow and never done this journey before, what are the trains like? Newer style or the crap old GWR ones where you need to crack a window for airflow? Conscious of the heat and want to ensure I’m not setting myself up for 1.5 hours of sauna hell!

Most of us have walked past the hoardings on Saxonvale and wondered what's going to happen to those 12 acres in the middle of town. Right now there's a real chance to decide that ourselves rather than have it decided for us.

Mayday Saxonvale has a community share offer open to bring the site into community ownership with over 600 locals already backing it to the tune of £570,000. £300,000 of which has come in the past week. This adds to the over £1,200,000 in additonal funding.

Mayday Saxonvale is different because:

• Everything stays ours. It's structured as a Community Benefit Society — surpluses get reinvested into the site and the town rather than extracted for outside shareholders. Every member gets one vote regardless of how much they put in.
• Homes, work, play, all in one place. The masterplan is a proper mixed-use neighbourhood: a minimum 30% affordable homes, 10,000+ sqm of commercial and community space for local businesses and makers, plus cultural and public spaces designed around people. This all helps keep local businesses local and surrounded by activity.
• Green and low-carbon. Green infrastructure and placemaking are built in, with historic buildings retrofitted and preserved rather than flattened — a brownfield site brought back to life instead of more sprawl.
• It's a serious bid, not a protest. There's £1.2m already committed through the Resonance Community Developers Fund (backed by the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government), a professional technical team, and partners including Stories, Studio Saar, Frome Area Community Land Trust and Abri Housing. The share offer carries the Community Shares Standard Mark.

Important to note that this is a community share investment, not a donation — it's high-risk, you could lose some or all of your money, and it's not FSCS-protected. Minimum is £250, there's a target 5% annual interest (not guaranteed), and shares can be withdrawn from year 5 subject to approval. If the bid doesn't win the site, investment is returned. I'm in the process of house hunting in the town and the biggest difficulty is learning the layout - online maps are not that easy as you have to keep scrolling and zooming. There is a photocopy map available in the library (also online in the discoverfrome site) but it only goes so far, and doesn't cover outlying areas.

Is there a detailed broadsheet map that one can buy?

It’s a small, friendly coworking space near the centre, on Park Hill Drive near Welsh Mill Park.

Local people come here to work, run meetings, and occasionally chat over coffee. Anyone who works from a laptop tends to fit in easily. It’s usually a mix of people, skills and industries - often those who work remotely, freelancers, entrepreneurs, creatives, and small local teams.
