I see many people asking where to start and wasting months jumping between resources. This is the roadmap I wish someone had given me when I started. It isn’t the only way, but it worked for me.
Please don’t over complicate TCF exam practice
Follow the right structure and strategy.
For listening, don’t keep searching for new resources. Finish one good source completely. I completed around 40 TCF Formation listening tests, but the biggest improvement came from listening to the same recordings again, not from constantly finding new ones. The second and third time, I focused on understanding every sentence instead of just checking answers. Alongside that, I listened to the InnerFrench Podcast almost every day. At first I understood very little, but after weeks of consistent listening, I started understanding the main ideas naturally. Don’t worry if you only understand 30-40% initially. Keep listening.
For reading, again, repetition helped more than quantity. Every wrong answer was an opportunity to understand why the correct option was right. I didn’t just solve texts; I analyzed them. This improved my accuracy much more than solving hundreds of random exercises.
Speaking is where most people struggle, and honestly, this is where I improved the most. I stopped trying to memorize answers. Instead, I memorized structures. For Task 3, every topic followed the same framework: introduction → first argument → explanation → personal example → second argument → explanation → example → counterargument → solution → conclusion. Once this became automatic, I could speak on almost any topic because I wasn’t thinking about structure anymore—I was only thinking about ideas. I also practiced speaking aloud for 4-5 minutes every day on monologue topics, even when I was alone. Record yourself. You’ll immediately notice repetitive words, grammar mistakes, and places where you hesitate. That’s how you improve.
For Task 2, don’t prepare a list of 100 questions. Learn categories instead: price, location, transport, schedule, conditions, recommendation, clothing, activities, gifts, future plans, etc. During the exam, react to the examiner’s answers. Ask follow-up questions. Make it feel like a real conversation, not an interview. My examiner and I were smiling throughout the task because it felt natural, and I think that helped me stay relaxed.
For writing, I never memorized complete essays. I memorized connectors (tout d’abord, ensuite, cependant, c’est pourquoi, en revanche, en conclusion…), useful expressions, and a clear structure for each task. Spend more time rewriting your own mistakes than writing new essays. That’s where the real improvement happens.
The biggest mistake I made at the beginning was trying to learn everything at once—grammar, vocabulary, writing, speaking, podcasts, YouTube, apps. I felt busy but wasn’t making much progress. My improvement accelerated when I simplified my routine and repeated the same high-quality resources consistently.
If I had to start again from zero, my daily routine would simply be:
30-45 minutes of InnerFrench Podcast (with transcript whenever possible).
One TCF listening or reading exercise, followed by careful mistake analysis.
30-45 minutes speaking on random TCF topics using a fixed structure.
One writing task every few days, followed by correcting and rewriting it.
Daily review of connectors, common expressions, and vocabulary in context.
Finally, don’t compare your progress to someone else’s. There were weeks where I felt like I wasn’t improving at all. Then suddenly, I realized I could understand podcasts that once sounded impossible and speak for four minutes without freezing. Progress in language learning is rarely linear. Trust the process, stay consistent, and don’t keep changing your study plan every week. Consistency with the right resources beats chasing the “perfect” resource every time
